Chicago Cubs - You Fired the Wrong Employee (1 Viewer)

So the lack of judgement and sensitivity to an important issue causes the termination of one of your employees because he played Smack My ##### Up on the PA but the employee who actually smacked the women up stays employed.

The Chicago Cubs have apologized for a song that was played after relieverAroldis Chapman left the mound during Sunday's game.

The Cubs said an employee played Prodigy's "Smack My ##### Up" after Chapman pitched the ninth inning of a 6-4 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. That employee was fired Monday.

"We apologize for the irresponsible music selection during our game last night," Cubs president of baseball operations Crane Kenney said in a statement. "The selection of this track showed a lack of judgment and sensitivity to an important issue. We have terminated our relationship with the employee responsible for making the selection and will be implementing stronger controls to review and approve music before public broadcast during our games."

Chapman, who the Cubs acquired from the New York Yankees at the trade deadline, missed the first 29 games of this season under baseball's domestic violence policy. He was involved in an October incident where he allegedly choked his girlfriend.

Police did not file charges against the Cuban-born left-hander, citing insufficient evidence, conflicting stories and uncooperative witnesses. Major League Baseball announced Chapman's suspension in early March, two months after the Yankees traded four minor leaguers to the Cincinnati Reds for the All-Star closer.

yeah, obviously that is the difference but save the BS press release that you consider domestic abuse an important issue.
They consider domestic abuse is an important issue. They are also running a professional baseball team. Chapman served the suspension administered by the league.

Do we know this to be true?  I'm not sure we or the Cubs do, plus the guy served the suspension.  That's not on the Cubs.

Do we know the PA guy played a distasteful (albeit it made me laugh) song that may offend? Yes.  I'd imagine this sort of song broke some rule/policy on playing explicit lyrics over the PA.

No problem with the firing.

Two of these things are definitely true.  The other one is up for debate. What has the Cubs organization done that makes you think they consider domestic violence an important issue?  Because they've certainly done at least one thing to suggest that they don't.

Are you suggesting that no teams should have picked up Chapman?  You know, the guy who had already served his suspension and was never convicted of the alleged acts by a criminal court.

No, I'm asking why a poster said that the Cubs "consider domestic violence to be an important issue."

Each team is free to make their own decisions on the value of winning vs character.  I was glad my team didn't acquire Chapman.  If they had I'd still root for them, but I would hope they'd take some sort of action to compensate for their apparent tolerance of domestic violence. Maybe matching his salary with donations to a shelter for victims of domestic violence, or planning an awareness night with proceeds to go to a charity, or whatever. I'm asking if the Cubs did anything like that.

The OJ defense.  Good one imo
Even better here where the state dismissed the case before trial, probably citing something "no reasonable likelihood of conviction" or "insufficient evidence to obtain a conviction."

Look, I get that there are circumstances, especially in DV cases, where the guy very likely did it yet the state has proof issues.  I'm sure there are thousands of circumstances like this that have happened.  However, there are also circumstances where people were charged and they actually didn't do it, so the charges are dropped.  As such, I find it disingenuous to our system to automatically assume the guy did it despite the dismissal.  I find it similarly disingenuous to criticize that guy's employer for hiring the guy, especially in a circumstance where said guy, despite no conviction, served the administrative punishment associated with his collectively bargained agreement made with his employer's agency of oversight.

Ah. My misinterpretation.
