Chiefs | Team agrees to terms with Harris

Tue, 6 Mar 2007 10:05:01 -0800

Sean Jensen, of the Pioneer Press, reports the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms on a six-year contract with free agent LB Napoleon Harris (Vikings).

Over Kawika Mitchell?
Mitchell is an abortion of a linebacker. Then again, you're probably one of those kids who thinks tackle stats are the be-all and end-all of performance.
Please turn down the tool factor quickly if you want to continue posting. Firstly, BSTs point is defensible. More importantly, your reply could've been made in a much less offensive manner.

Here's the article on KCStar.com:

Chiefs agree to terms with free-agent LB HarrisBy ADAM TEICHER The Kansas City StarThe Chiefs and unrestricted free agent linebacker Napoleon Harris agreed to terms this morning on a six-year contract.Financial details were unavailable. Some still were being finalized. The Chiefs plan to use Harris, a five-year NFL veteran with the Raiders and Vikings, as their starting middle linebacker. He would replace Kawika Mitchell, an unrestricted free agent. The Chiefs may try to re-sign Mitchell, who has yet to make any free-agent visits. The Chiefs were discussing whether to move Mitchell to outside linebacker even before they signed Harris. The 6-feet-2, 255-pound Harris was Oakland’s first-round draft pick in 2002. He went to the Vikings in the trade that sent Randy Moss to Oakland. He visited with Tampa Bay before arriving for his visit in Kansas City.

Do you know Jacket? If not, this is par for the course, just so you know.

Such a disappointment after such a good rookie season.

I still think he should just be used as a WLB. Let him attack, and use his athletic ability.

By the way:

Sean Jensen, of the Pioneer Press, reports Kansas City Chiefs LB Napoleon Harris' six-year contract with the team is worth $24 million. Harris received a $7.5 million signing bonus and will make $13 million over the first three years of the contract.

Wow.

:blackdot: Must've thought they were competing with the Redskins.

ONLY $7.5 mil? Hell, I thought the league minimum this year was about $15! The contracts have been silly! If I were a NFL retiree I would seriously be thinking about un-retiring and signing a short, incentive laden contract to get in on some of the funny money action. Seriously.

It's not even that I think that money is sooo big. It is a 6 year deal, so I can't see his cap number being huge any time in the near future.

But getting 13 mill over the first three years, that means they are committing to him as their MLB for the next 3-4 years. That's a very questionable move, IMO.

I don't know much about Napoleon (other than I have him on my fantasy team), but from what I've read he's been pretty solid. I think he's had some years of inconsistency but wasn't he pretty highly regarded coming out of college? Explain it to me like I'm a 4 year old.I thought it was a good signing for the Chiefs (atleast an upgrade compared to what they had) since he's only 27. If he could get back to his earlier form I thought he'd be solid. ;)

Was the top LB coming out of college. Played DE and OLB in college. Crazy athletic ability. Moved in to the MLB spot with the Raiders, who love having guys change positions coming out of college (*Sigh*).Showed promise playing with a good group of vets that season, and has never played that well again. From an athletic ability standpoint, he's lacking nothing at MLB. But instincts is another story. It's my best guess as to why he's never excelled in the middle. He's young, but then again, he came in the league with Phillip Buchanon, and we pretty much know what we have with that piece of work, don't we?Nap has never had stability, to be sure, so I suppose there's always the chance that the Chiefs could put him at a position and let him get comfortable, but I'd like his chances at OLB opposite DJ. Who's playing opposite DJ, anyway? Bell? Fox?

Harris was pretty highly regarded coming out of college. It was hoped he'd be a solidifying influence for the Raider LB corps. He never lived up to his expected potential in Oakland and fussed over being moved inside -- he thought he was an OLB. The Raiders ended up allowing him to leave despite having zero depth or upper level talent at LB. Harris looked better last season in Minnesota after struggling to make a splash his first season there. The knock on Harris has never been talent. He should be successful as an every down backer. He's got excellent size, speed, and range and should be better in coverage than he has been. He has just always seemed to be a step slow with his reactions, making his playing speed appear much worse than it should. And, although Harris has had to learn four defenses (3-4, three different 4-3 including Tampa-2) under three different coordinators in five seasons, it's notable that both teams that have allowed him to go elsewhere have had relatively weak starting LB units and depth. Oakland was playing Danny Clark inside and Sam Williams outside. The Vikings have left themselves three and a half healthy backers right now.Harris could be an upgrade over Kawika Mitchell. It's also conceivable that he could be the very same player. About the only thing he has clearly done better than Mitchell is rush the passer. And comparatively speaking, he was a much better tackler than Mitchell in 2006.

Shhhhh...Donnie Edwards.

possibly KC had him rated very highly coming out of college (a lot of teams did) & think they can use him more effectively... GM peterson got to see him closely when he was in the division in OAK & probably played his best ball so far, so that may also have factored into the decision... with DJ on strong side, a lot of action should get funnelled to him (especially since they don't have greatest interior DL)...

If you remember, he was drafted in 2002 @ 1.23.....in that draft, I do remember KC looking at Harris. They had the #8 pick and ended up trading up to waste a pick on Ryan Sims, but they were looking at Harris as a potential 2nd rounder.I like the move. Mitchell never impressed me, especially for where he was drafted (2nd round). What will help matters even more is if Derrick Johnson starts playing like the player who was a potential top-5 pick in 2005....and um, if they sign, oh I don't know.....maybe about 4 new DT's.

BTW, i wan't trying to justify the deal, just to see what their rationale might have been... to me the contract (given guaranteed money ) seems high, & i'm shocked he got that much... but maybe i shouldn't be, with the kind of money guys like leonard davis & dockery got?
