Chiefs and Gonzalez agree in Principle to a Five-Year Contract Extension

Jan 12, 2007, 9:23:22 AM

Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Friday that TE Tony Gonzalez agreed in principle to a five-year contract extension. As per Chiefs policy, no further terms of the agreement were announced.

“Simplistically, we’re very pleased to get this done,” Peterson said. “It will, in all essence, allow Tony Gonzalez to finish his career with the Kansas City Chiefs. The obvious is he’s been a very, very productive player for us. I think for our fans in Kansas City it was important for us to get this done. He’s done a marvelous job for us both on and off the football field.”

Gonzalez (6-5, 251) has appeared in 158 career NFL games (142 starts), including starts in 142 of the last 144 contests. He owns the top mark in Chiefs history with 721 receptions for 8,710 yards (12.1 avg.) and 61 touchdowns. His 8,710 receiving yards and 721 receptions rank second in NFL history among TEs, trailing only TE Shannon Sharpe. He needs two more receiving TDs to pass Sharpe (62) for the most by a TE in NFL annals.

The 10-year NFL veteran earned his eighth straight appearance to the NFL’s annual All-Star Game this year. The only Chiefs TE ever selected to the Pro Bowl, Gonzalez joins Fred Arbanas as the only other Kansas City TE to earn a berth in the Pro Bowl or the AFL All-Star Game. Arbanas made five AFL All-Star appearances (’62-65 and ‘67). Those eight Pro Bowl invites are tied with Sharpe for the most by a tight end in NFL history. Gonzalez started 15 games in 2006, leading the club with 73 receptions for 900 yards with five touchdowns. The Torrance, California native caught a club-record 102 passes for 1,258 yards (12.3 avg.) with seven touchdowns in 2004.

At the University of California, Gonzalez saw action in 33 games on the gridiron, catching 89 passes for 1,302 yards (14.6 avg.) with eight touchdowns.

The Kansas City Chiefs announced Friday, Jan. 12, they have signed TE Tony Gonzalez to a five-year contract extension. Financial terms of the deal were not announced.

Good news for the Chiefs and for Gonzo owners. Guarantees he'll be a top-3 TE for at least the next three or four years, and will finish his career holding every TE receiving record.

The question now is...who's gonna be throwing him the rock?

I agree I guess Gonzo doesn't care about winning b/c I don't see the chiefs doing anything in the future.Green is done and their HC is Herm need I say more? :lmao:

Not to mention the OL questions and how much he will be pulled from being a receiver to be used as a blocker.

I think it's great that he's staying with the Chiefs - it'd be wierd seeing Tony G in some other team's uni.

Great move by the Chiefs, Gonzales is one of my favorite NFL players of all-time. Still, I can't help but wonder if this is a tell-tale sign they are sticking with the same Green-Gonzo-Kennison nucleus to compliment LJ rather than starting the rebuild for the future. That nucleus wasn't good enough to get LJ far last year, this year and won't take LJ and the Chiefs far next year.

Damn, I thought Kris Wilson was going to be a great Dynasty Sleeper.
:bag: Kris Wilson = :hey:

Brodie Croyle = :bag: :hey:
Adam Teicher - KC StarFrom the Blogger:

QB Brodie Croyle is an important figure as the Chiefs begin to ponder their future at quarterback, both in the short and long terms. One veteran, starter QB Trent Green, played poorly this season. The other, QB Damon Huard, is scheduled to be a free agent. There won’t be room for both Green and Huard on the 2007 Chiefs roster. No matter what they decide, Croyle looms as either a starter or, more than likely, the top backup who would get a quick promotion if the regular falters. Croyle appears destined to be the starting quarterback by opening day of 2008, at the latest.
Also, from MFL/KFFL:

Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Brodie Croyle is expected to be the starter next season, or more likely the top backup who would get a quick promotion if the regular falters. QB Trent Green played poorly last year, while QB Damon Huard is a free agent and only one of them will likely be back. Croyle is expected to be the starter by the 2008 season, at the very latest.
