GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- Strong safety Chinedum Ndukwe sustained what appears to be a knee injury and was taken off the practice field this morning on a cart. Several trainers attended to him.

No official word is available yet from the club.

Ndukwe is listed on the depth chart from Aug. 4 as the second-string strong safety. Dexter Jackson is the starter. Former Miami University star John Busing is listed third at strong safety.

Bengals.com reporting...

GEORGETOWN, Ky. _ Chinedum Ndukwe, one of the Bengals' three top safeties, returned to the field with an elastic band around his knee minutes after he was carted off the field Wednesday morning with his head in his hands.

Ndukwe hit the grass after he tried to plant his foot coming up field to cover a pass in 11-on-11 as the Bengals worked in shoulder pads and shorts with minimal hitting. He grabbed his knee and rolled in pain, but 20 minutes later he was back on the sidelines standing up and holding his helmet.

Ok so if he was back on the field minutes after he was carted off, you have to think they didn't even deem it serious enough to do an immediate MRI. If he's back on the field that quickly for practice (we're talkin bout practice!) you've got to think there's nothing to be overly concerned about. I sure hope so because I definately am targeting this guy late in drafts.

He was standing on the sidelines though not on the playing field. Rolling in pain sounds bad.

Great news for Ndukwe owners... :goodposting:

Per Rotoworld:

Bengals SS Chinedum Ndukwe was carted off the field with a knee injury during Wednesday morning's practice.

He later returned to the field with an elastic band around his knee and pronounced himself "O.K." That news is a relief for a Bengals defense that is expecting Ndukwe to take over the starting job from Dexter Jackson.

Bengals S Chinedum Ndukwe is fine after injuring his knee briefly during Wednesday morning's practice.

"He just kind of tweaked his knee and was kind of able to come back, a la Paul Pierce," said coach Marvin Lewis. Ndukwe is battling to start at strong safety.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I could really HUG you right now! :lmao:

Full report to come, but Norton and I were at camp tonight. Ndukwe didn't go in the evening practice and was moving very gingerly on crutches. He wasn't immobilized, however, just the small sleeve hinted above. It appeared that he wanted no part of putting weight on it tonight. Still, the fact he was moving around without immobilization is hopefully a good sign that this afternoon's MRI went well.

Right? :lmao:

Bengals.com

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - Fox 19 in Cincinnati has reported he'll miss four to six weeks. A source with knowledge of the injury put it at five weeks. Head coach Marvin Lewis won't say or doesn't know.

Whatever, Chinedum Ndukwe's knee injury appears to make him questionable for the season opener in Baltimore Sept. 7.

Ndukwe, one of the Bengals' three top safeties, said he was OK Wednesday morning after he failed to plant his foot coming upfield to cover a pass in 11-on-11 as the Bengals worked in shoulder pads and shorts with minimal hitting. He grabbed his knee and rolled in pain, but 20 minutes later he was back on the sidelines standing up and holding his helmet.

But he could be seen on crutches walking across the end zone before Wednesday night's practice. It's believed he didn't suffer any ligament damage in his knee, but apparently there could be a cartilage issue because he's not practicing and he's on crutches.

Lewis would only say Ndukwe has a lower leg problem and wouldn't give a timetable on his return.

Ndukwe returned to the field with an elastic band around his knee minutes after he was carted off the field with his head in his hands.

"I'm OK," he said after practice, admitting he was quite relieved because "I've never felt like that before in my life."

Missing the entire preseason can't be good in terms of him winning the starting SS job. If that 4-6 weeks is true, I don't see how he's the starter to begin the season. Obviously over time, he'll probably overtake Dexter Jackson at some point, but when? Week3? Week 5? Week 8? Does this make Ndukwe more attractive as a waiver option than a draftable option in redraft leagues since if the 4-6 weeks is true, there will likely be at least 2 games which he isn't the starter.

On my teams, I have him as my #3 DB in a start 2 DB leagues. If I was drafting tonight, that is where I would feel comfortable drafting him, as my #3 DB. Nothing higher than that.

I have him in a dynasty league, so he's certainly worth keeping. Just wanted to use him right away as opposed to seeing how LaRon Landry scores this season.

You may not be real pleased with Landry. He was moved to FS after the Taylor ordeal last season and was not moved back this year. Add the cover 2 scheme that Washington seems to be using more of, and his numbers could take a pretty serious hit. Like many of you I am very high on Ndukwe and have him in several leagues (both dynasty and redraft). Hopefully this is only a knee sprain and he'll be back soon but these things can tend to linger. That said, I don't buy for a second that he is not ahead of Jackson when healthy, but this injury could be a real problem for us, especially early on. As for that draft tonight, I would make sure everyone in the league knows about the injury so he is sure to fall into the middle/late rounds for you. Make it sound like they are going to amputate :tinfoilhat: Name dropping is a no no but who says you can't spread a little propaganda before the draft?

The downfall of so many dynasty teams :excited:
Absolutely. In Ndukwe's case, however, that potential was immediately realized when he entered the starting lineup late last season. It may have been only a couple of games, but it's not unreasonable to expect that he needs playing time to realize that potential, rather than the seasoning and playing time that many other "big upside" targets need.

It's hard to say how long it will take him to capture the starting job once he's healthy. Were it not for the injury I am very confident he would have been starting by the end of camp but if he misses 3-4 weeks he probably won't be in there right away when he returns. What I do know for certain is that Jackson is nothing special. He's solid versus the run, very average in coverage and is not much of a big play threat.

If they don't hand Ndukwe the job as soon as he's able it will likely have more to do with the experience factor than ability. With White, Hall and Joseph already starting, this is a very young secondary. If you plug Ndukwe in there it leaves Joseph as the most experienced DB on the field with 31 career games.

The bottom line is that while I believe Ndukwe is going to be something special in the long term, if you only start 5 IDPs there are going to be a lot of quality options that are much more safe for you at this point.

I live in cinci and here is what the local media is saying via the radio....

Antwan Odom is most likely going to be ready for the season opener

Ndukwe is most likely going to be questionable for the opener.

I dont have either on my team, but I just remember hearing this yesterday on Lance Mccallister.

Yeah I figured something along those lines. I have a shallow IDP draft next week and don't know whether its worth it to roster him if he's going to miss significant time. Just didn't know if there was any local buzz on it. I'm sure someone will post when there is.

Part of the problem is that the relationship between the media and Marvin and many of the players has grown more and more contentious over the past couple of years. And that's after Marvin was already holding his cards close to the vest. With Chris Henry and Chad Johnson and all the other uncertainties on the line, there just isn't much focus on the defense. What will likely happen is what happened with Antwan Odom yesterday. One of the writers happened to notice that he walked out of the stadium without a boot on. That's probably what we'll get. My gut read of this is that Ndukwe had a significant knee sprain and you won't see him practice until after the season starts. He's not likely to get into the starting lineup before Week 4 or 5 (if then) unless there's an injury or Dexter Jackson is a complete mess.I don't think there's a place for him in shallow leagues right now unless you have room for a single backup behind two very good, durable players with late bye weeks. If he gets left on the wire, he's been pimped enough around the web this offseason that you'll have to move quickly when the news comes.

FWIW -- C. Trent Rosecrans blog

I talked a little with Ndukwe, and he felt pretty good about where he is. Marvin Lewis has told players not to discuss their injuries in any detail. Ndukwe said he didn't have a timetable for his return, but does expect to play this season.
C Trent Rosecrans is one of the best in Cincy, so I would trust him over most sources. I think Ndukwe will be questionable week 1....until then I say we just wait it out.

Ndukwe expects to play this week.

C. Trent Rosecrans

Bengals safety Chinedum Ndukwe has practiced all week and says he's ready to get back on the field.

"I expect to play, I don’t know how much they’ll use me, it’s up to (the coaches)," Ndukwe said. "I expect to be out there and be able to do as much as I can."

Ndukwe had been out since the second week of training camp with a knee injury and didn't play in last week's loss at Baltimore.

"It was difficult, but we win as a team, lose as a team," Ndukwe said of watching Sunday's 17-10 loss to the Ravens. "You’d like to think you could help out in some way, but I don’t know that. That’s last week. I’m just focused on the Titans."

Fellow safety Dexter Jackson missed both of the team's practices so far this week, including Thursday, with an injured thumb.

Although Ndukwe wouldn't violate Marvin Lewis' policy on talking about the team's injuries, he did hint that Jackson would be able to play, as did Lewis on Wednesday.

Ndukwe, though, said he didn't expect to be behind any, despite missing the first game and all of the preseason.

"Football is something we’ve been doing for so long, it really comes down to running, covering and making tackles," Ndukwe said. "That’s a mindset that’s been with me as long as I’ve been playing. Will I be rusty? I don’t think so because I’ve been playing for so long and mentally I’m 100 percent there."

Ndukwe said he was even excited to be back practicing, but really looks forward to donning the pads again on Sunday.

"Physically I feel good, really good, good enough to play. Obviously nobody’s ever 100 percent, except for the first day of training camp. But I’m good enough to play, so hopefully you’ll see me out there making plays," Ndukwe said. "It’s beena long time. It feels good to be back and I’m back."

Jene, what does that mean for Marvin White's playing time?
I don't think it does much to White. Almost certainly brings Jackson out of any subpackages. I think the majority of Ndukwe's time comes at the expense of Jackson, with White possibly sitting a series here or there but little more. With Ndukwe likely the better all-around talent and Rivers a pursuit threat, the long term probably has White's tackle potential dropping some.
