Chris Horton (1 Viewer)

You own him, too, huh?! He's been there--made a tackle for a five-yard loss to end a Giant's drive in the 3rd quarter. But, I haven't seen him at all in the 4th and am still looking. Will update if I spot him!

...Reed Doughty has been playing more as the primary strong safety since the last drive of the third quarter and the first drive of the fourth. Chris Horton came in as the No. 3 safety on the first drive of the fourth quarter. Not sure what to read into that. That trend has continued deep into the final quarter.

Any updates on this situation?

I like the overall tackle numbers, but for what I had to pay in my auction league to get him, I'm nervous.

Doughty was on the field a lot the second half (unsure why) but it also bears mentioning that Fletcher was tackling everything in sight and ended up with 18 tackles on the day. I'm not sure there was a lot left over for the safeties.

Defense snaps from Washington Times

(64 snaps, which includes three penalties)

DL: Albert Haynesworth 46, Phillip Daniels 43, Cornelius Griffin 51, Andre Carter 61, Lorenzo Alexander 17, Kedric Golston 26, Jeremy Jarmon 9.

LB: London Fletcher 64, Rocky McIntosh 57, Brian Orakpo 54, Chris Wilson 10.

DB: Carlos Rogers 59, DeAngelo Hall 62, Fred Smoot 12, LaRon Landry 63, Reed Doughty 30, Chris Horton 40.

Interesting situation at safety. Horton started but played only five snaps in the last six drives.
In other words, Horton basically got benched sometime in the 3rd quarter. Couldn't find any comments from Zorn though.

Not looking to release any $$$ content, but Horton is rated fairly high this week. Would love to hear something from someone, in the know, regarding his situation.

Thanks

I am guessing they do not put much "thought" into the projections - i.e. they have a formula based on season-long projections that is tweaked based on the current match-up.I doubt for the early projections they make any adjustments for playing time issues, and probably would not change the season-long projection based on one-game. While this would be nice - I imagine it would also be extremely (prohibitively) time consuming for the first round of projections. As the week goes on and there are specific players in the news - I think the projections will be tweaked up or down.Right now, I have not seen anything about Horton's status this week or going forward, or why he was seemingly benched last week (hence this thread). It would be a bit pre-mature for anyone to speculate how that impacts his play this week without knowing more. So the default should be to assume nothing has changed until you learn otherwise - when it comes to the projections.Come Sunday, you wil have to make up your own mind about the playing time issue - but I think the projection assumes regular playing time. If you think he plays less - then definitely downgrade him.

From the Washington Times today:

Horton gets corrected

Although second-year strong safety Chris Horton played only five second-half snaps Sunday against the New York Giants, safeties coach Steve Jackson said Horton was not benched for poor play. But after practice, Horton cited a first-quarter mistake that resulted in a 22-yard run by Ahmad Bradshaw for his limited action.

"I kind of lined up in the wrong spot one time," Horton said. "It kind of cost us even though I got myself back into position. I was disguising, and if I would have started outside where I should have been, I would have hit that thing in the backfield."

Horton met with Jackson to go over the game video.

"I guess there was kind of a misunderstanding between me and my coach," Horton said. "We got it corrected."

Horton played every snap of the first two quarters but was replaced by former starter Reed Doughty for most of the second half.

"It's like having two good pitchers: You can switch it up to change the tempo of the game," Jackson said. "Both of them did well."
I don't know if I'm completely buying the reason for Horton being off the field. The coaches do like Doughty, and he did play well when he was in. But Horton, while being a gifted athlete and fearless as a football player, is still learning the ropes of being an NFL safety. I could definitely see Doughty continuing to split snaps with Horton for the time being, similar to this past game. But even with the split time Horton had OK stats and was very active in the playcalling. Greg Blache loves bringing the SS in on run blitzes.

Thanks, Sidewinder. Still don't know what to think about this week.
Horton could be a frustrating player to figure out most of the season. :lmao:I still believe Horton was pulled last week due to coaches losing some trust in him during the game, at least with what they were calling/game planning last week. I think Doughty just became the "safer" player in their minds, in a close game where the D couldn't afford mistakes. This week Horton played the whole game and put up nice numbers, in a close game where the D couldn't afford to make mistakes. He made some key plays in the 4th that kept the Rams from pulling off an upset.Horton's a playmaker, to be sure, so anyone's decision to start or sit him lies in their other options and their level of risk aversion. He's got a high ceiling any given week, but that threat of losing PT (due to being young, and the 'Skins having another SS they like and trust) will hang over him until he strings together a number of solid games.

A decent article on Horton's ups and downs from the Washington Post.

On the Washington Redskins' two biggest defensive plays, safety Chris Horton found himself right in the middle of the action. He made great reads and executed great plays.

On the team's worst defensive play, though, Horton was right there, too, watching as Rams running back Steven Jackson scampered deep into Redskins territory.
Horton may have had a bad play on that SJ run, but Laron Landry once again shot upfield, out of control, looking for the huge hit only to have SJ cut back and leave him taking a bad angle that he couldn't adjust from. I'm getting sick of Landry's resemblance to Roy Williams.

Speaking of the Redskins, Aaron's comment about DeAngelo Hall this week is worth correcting:

Things don't seem to be working out very well for him this year in Washington, however, as he was shut out this week and had just 1 solo tackle and 2 assists last week...it seems that there is probably plenty of blame to go around but Hall is certainly not living up to the big contract he signed this offseason.
Actually, Hall was the the only Redskin defensive player who I was impressed with against Lions. He was shadowing Calvin Johnson on most plays, and held him to only 50 receiving yards. Stafford spent most of the game picking on the other CBs (Rogers and Smoot) instead. He's still a downgrade, but that's because he's been playing better than usual, not worse. The way Carlos Rogers has been playing, I would expect that to continue, and that may also explain why the safeties aren't getting as many tackles.

From Rotoworld:

Redskins SS Chris Horton has been told that he won't be starting Sunday against the Bucs.It looks like Horton will be benched in favor of Reed Doughty. There's no official word from coach Jim Zorn yet. Horton won the job over Doughty early in the offseason and was expected to be solid in run support, but the Skins are giving up 127.7 rushing yards per game right now.Source: Rick Maese on Twitter

oof.

According to NFL.com, Reed Doughty will get the start vs. TB. I actually dropped Horton from my roster and replaced him with Doughty. I have pretty good depth at S, so I'm not too worried.

Jene, do you think Doughty is worth rostering?

Here's some quotes from Greg Blache on the Horton/Doughty switch:

"Reed's actually played better the last couple of weeks, and Chris has struggled a little bit," Blache said. "He had a play last week with bad eyes; we got a big interference call. He had an incident the week before where it was not a good fit.

"And it's not that we're down on him, but the fact that you have a guy in Reed that's so close to him, it gives him an opportunity, gives Chris a chance to catch his breath, refocus and come back strong and gives Reed a chance to get out on the field more."

http://www.profootballweekly.com/2009/10/0...t-for-cardinals

(Need to read through their bullet points)

• Redskins SS Chris Horton, last year's seventh-round surprise, has been benched for Reed Doughty. But the move appears temporary. Horton has had a few mental miscues, namely in the loss at Detroit, but Greg Blache said he thinks Horton just needs to refocus and get back to basics. Blache also said that Doughty has played well.

Also:

• We're told the Rams believe they should be able to weather the storm sufficiently at strong safety with Craig Dahl replacing the injured James Butler (left knee, out 2-4 weeks). "Very solid," Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo said of the job Dahl did replacing Butler in the Week Three loss to the Packers (team-high seven tackles). "It was kind of nice to know that you could put a guy in there with limited reps."

Did Horton take back over the starting job tonight? (missed the game)
He appeared to be on the field a lot last night. Then again, he also gave up a long TD, so even if he did win back the job, he may have lost it again last night. (note: this is all pure speculation)
I would be a little surprised if Horton is held responsible (at least completely) for the Jackson TD pass. There were 2 CBs on Jackson's side of the field (Horton started out in the middle) and it looked like Carlos Rogers was supposed to have the deep contain responsibilities. Rogers bit on the pump fake to the opposite side of the field and let Jackson get behind him.In my completely amateur and untrained opinion, Rogers deserves at least as much of the blame for blowing that play has Horton does, if not more.

He was technically in the starting lineup. But, both he and Doughty were on the field a lot it seemed. That's not too surprising given Philly's use of 3 and 4 receiver sets, though.I'm not exactly sure what this game means for him going forward, but the fact that he started the game and significantly increased his PT over last week seems to bode well.

The breakdown showed Doughty at 8 plays (13% of defensive snaps) to Horton's 58 (94%). For a span late in the second quarter the Redskins used a three safety set, which is where Doughty got most of his action.

From those numbers, he's the starter again, but with this team it seems to be subject to a week-by-week whim.

Any other news here...sitting on Doughty in one league, Horton in another...not sure if I should just drop them both for someone else, or put my stock in one or the other.
