Chris Johnson to get cut in March? (1 Viewer)

A league source tells Profootballtalk.com that "several teams" around the league believe the Titans may release Chris Johnson before the fifth day of the new league year in 2012.

Johnson's 2012 salary of $8 million would be guaranteed if he's on the roster at that point. It's guaranteed for injury only. According to PFT, the feeling is now that the Titans won't pay the money "unless his on-field play improves significantly." The fifth day of the next league year would fall in early March of 2012. Johnson signed a six-year, $55.26 million contract on September 1, and has been thoroughly ineffective through seven games.

I think he received a $10 Mil signing bonus but I thought much more of his contract was guaranteed money.

I don't see why this would be a huge surprise. He is vastly underperforming for the contract he signed. If the Titans can save a good bit of money, I don't

see why they don't and give Ringer or someone else a shot next year. He looks awful this year. Why not let someone else have the headache and cough up

the $$?

That PFT article is garbage. Their "league source" is Jason La Canfora fro NFL.com.

Here is a blurb from the actual article he wrote.

"The Tennessee Titans could get out of Chris Johnson's deal after this season having paid the struggling running back just $13 million.

Now, I don't foresee it going down that way -- it's not the team's plan. It's worth noting, however, that after a long and at times grating holdout, the contract is structured in a way that could allow the Titans let Johnson go."

not happening

Titans went a real long time with no true game breakers. Fisher once gave a real long wonderful speech on this that you can prob find at titansonline.com.

Before him maybe Dyson, maybe that Chris Sanders. Like them though, they had Roydell Williams who could somehow get open deep and drop gimmes.

They were, forever, burdened with these effective efficient guys that weren't hitting any home runs. Few teams took as long to score a TD each week. I wholeheartedly believe they would have been the worst team in the NFL if not for Munchak's OL all those years.

CJ's arrival gave Fisher leverage to convince them to get/draft Britt which was the highest WR they picked in a zillion years.

For some reason, many around here seem to forget the Titans were the top team in the NFL just a few years ago and had a 13-3 or 14-2 record. They quickly lost in the playoffs, but their regular season record and the accompanying stats were awesome. The last game or two wrecked what was a D only allowing about 11 points per game. Their weak offense only needed to score 12 to win(in theory) and this is probably why they didn't get so much love. Regardless, they were excellent recently.

Schwartz really hurt them leaving and took some key players in free agency. Haynesworth wanting 100 mil ended his career(about) and the Titans throne as a top D. He was as good a DT as I've ever seen for a year or two-definitely the fastest 330-350 lb guy I've ever seen. They had three top DBs that made the pro bowl and all-pro teams. Hope is gone, literally too. Finnegan lost his head with Andre and hasn't been the same since. He was great before. It's like the just have Griffin left. Kevin Mawae should go in the HOF and they lost a very key lineman. Before him, they did also have HOFers which is simply more credit that's due to Munchak. They had two awesome line coaches. One is now in Philly, the other is their head coach with not enough time to coach them one on one. Their OC died and their warrior QB died a year or two before briefly into his retirement. What they have left is what they have left. I mean it does seem like that. These are all that remains.

To give up one of the few that remain won't happen. Fisher had a gift for getting it done with whatever the GM gave him. Munchak doesn't and probably few others can do it like Fish. This doesn't in anyway mean CJ is walking. They still have two excellent tackles and a great blocking TE. It's something.

As I already wrote two or three times and surely will be written by many-their interior OL is pitiful and they're sure to address it in the offseason. During that best year I mentioned above, Roos was 1st team all-pro while Stewart was second team all-pro. They are extremely fortunate to have two Ts that were drafted late blossom into such great players. (again, Munchak OL coaching job) I'm so sure they know how lucky they are to have those Ts.

This is just PFT making a story in their classic fashion

If he doesn't explode at some point this year, and continues his current production the rest of the season, then I can absolutely see this happening. If he can show some spark, or anything that resembles his past abilities, then they will probably pay and pray.

Of course CJ would get picked up by another team almost immediately. He'd have to sign a much cheaper contract, but to say nobody would want him is just plain dumb or you're trolling.

I have never seen so many guys piling on a player after 7 games.

The guy has been a heck of a player for 3 years.....and 7 bad games and his career is done, he is overrated, he is too small, he is a one trick pony.

Pure garbage around here on Chris Johnson. It is really out of hand. All the "I told you so" types coming out of the woodwork after 3 years.

Yeah your smart. Puleeze.

yeah, i have been trying to buy him cheap in all my leagues.I dont get how everyone is overreacting on CJ. All he needs is one 100+ game and everyone will be back shining his knob.Dude is 26 years old and still blazingly quick, no idea why people think his career is over

Well, 3 out of 4 ain't bad. His career isn't over, but he sure as hell isn't the second coming of Barry Sanders either.

Why would anybody want him?
why did the Patriots want Randy Moss after he quit on Oakland?
Because Moss had a high ceiling. Chris Johnson appears to be a dud.
This is about the dumbest statement I have seen today...Moss' ceiling in his career was about the 2nd or 3rd best WR fantasy season ever.similarly, Johnson's ceiling is also a top-5 season for a RB career. I would say their ceilings are about equal. Johnson's is around 2400 total yards and 15-16 TDs, Moss' is 1500 yards, 20+ TDs.

The Titans should have never caved in for a new contract. The team is going nowhere and Johnson was going nowhere..what was he going to do?
