Chris Simms & Tim Rattay Visiting NE Today (1 Viewer)

Was never a Chris Simms fan. Did not think he was that good at Texas or Tampa. Not very accurate, talented, or tough. The exact opposite of his great father.

Any chance he is the play over Cassel? Assuming they roll with the guy that knows the system plus haven't heard much about Simms since the spleen injury.

So if you already have Cassel rostered, do you go ahead and pick up Simms before anyone else hears word?

Not tough? He played with a ruptured spleen. Maybe not good, but plenty tough.

FYI, got a link on this now.

Simms to get a look in NE

Meanwhile, free-agent quarterback Chris Simms is scheduled to arrive in New England Monday morning for a workout and a physical, Schefter reports. If all goes well, Simms could be a Patriot by the end of the day. Kansas City and Tennessee, each of whom had quarterbacks suffer significant injuries on Sunday, also have contacted Simms.

Tom Brady injury situation

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff September 7, 2008 09:39 PM

FOXBOROUGH -- We will wrap up the night by touching on the injury situation with Patriots quarterback Tom Brady:

Patriots coach Bill Belichick told his team that Tom Brady's left knee injury could be bad and to prepare for Matt Cassel to be the quarterback going forward, an NFL source told the Globe's Christopher L. Gasper tonight.

The source could not confirm the Yahoo! Sports report of a torn ACL. WBZ-TV in Boston also confirmed that Brady has an ACL tear.

The NFL Network is also reporting that Brady is out for the season with a serious knee injury.

The Globe can not confirm those reports at this time, however, multiple sources are not expecting good news when the quarterback undergoes further tests on Monday. Brady is resting at home tonight and the Patriots are bracing for the likelihood he will miss the season.

The Globe's Christopher L. Gasper also confirms that the Patriots are hosting free-agent quarterback Chris Simms on a visit at Gillette Stadium on Monday. And ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that the team will also bring in free agent quarterback Tim Rattay, an eight-year veteran who played last season with the Arizona Cardinals.

Actually Simms has a canon for an arm, was pretty accurate and did everything to win a playoff game VS. the skins 3 years ago. (refs and a greasy hand WR lost the game for them)

Gruden is one of the worst coaches to playy for as a qb... not patient, too complicated and IMO a poor teacher. He only does good with old QB's.

Simms could ressurect his career here imo. Good for him.

I agree. He didnt exactly get a fair shake there in Tampa all things considered. And I was never comfortable with the NE backup Q situation heading into '08. And who knows what the future holds with Cassell or whoever's at the helm. But Im glad to see Simms get another shot fairly quickly. Hopefully he has a decent showing, can make the squad and gets a chance to win football games again. He seems like a decent kid. And its never bad seeing good things happen to good people.

Simms is the best option, imo. Cassel for 3-5 games, then Simms.I don't like the Culpepper option since I don't care for the guy's persecution complex.1. Simms2. Harrington or Gutierrez3. Cassel4. Alex Smith in a trade5. Tim RattayGuys like Bouman, Dilfer, Gray, THasselbeck, and Holcomb aren't nice options.

Is this what it has come down to? First the SB loss, now this. :goodposting:

RELAX. It's all gravy. Pats fans have been blessed with approaching a decade of great football. It'll be fun to watch to see if they can't beat revised projections (looks like about 9-10 wins over in the poll thread).

The thing that many are missing is that Cassel has now been in the Patriot system for over three years. He knows this offense. While he was dreadful in preseason if he plays like he did yesterday he's going to keep this job. If he doesn't than I'm sure the door will be opened for a veteran like Simms once he has a clue what he's doing. The fact that BB didn't bring in another veteran during preseason shows he has faith in Cassel so we'll just have to sit tight and see if he can handle this opportunity.

From what I am seeing/hearing/observing, the starting job is Cassell's and whoever else they get will be brought in as a veteran backup.

Of course, this could change if Cassell stumbles and stumbles badly, but it looks like the Pats are not looking for someone to come in and start.

Funny line on the radio this morning . . .

"Who would have thought that Cassell would be starting for New England but Leinart would be a backup in Arizona."

And as a reminder, at least on paper, the schedule is doable. It'll give Cassell or whoever's at the helm minimally a fighting chance most weeks. Not to say that any weeks are every a cakewalk in the NFL, but just saying. And Im absolutely loving the RB depth at this very moment. Without that, the Pats might just be completely sunk. its gonna be interesting this season. different obvioulsy than recent seasons. but riding every week as a 2 TD favorite was wearing me out. it may just be nice to be a dog once again. hate losing Brady. absolutely hate it. but dont dislike being a 'dog' at all.

Glad you chimed in here Yudkin. Curious, how do you see Cassell performing? I understand he looked pretty awful in preseason, but how about in years past? There must be some reason he has kept the job, no?

Cassel will be the starter. If they thought guys like Simms and HArrington were better then him, dont you think they would have brought them in before the injury?

Any additions via non roster players will be strictly for depth

The Pats kept Cassell for several reasons. He knows the playbook and it would take another QB a decent period of adjustment to absorb it. He also has been touted for how well he's done in practice, and the Pats went with the axiom you play how you practice.

He has notl ooked very good in preseason games, but given the mix of players and play calling it's a bit of a scenario that normally would not happen.

The $64,000 question is how well will he do given that he has not started a game since high school. Given that, I don't think anyone could with any amount of certainty predict how well he will do.

I also personally think that people and not giving enough credit to the other 52 guys on the Pats roster. Tom Brady did not win 3 titles on his own or go undefeated in the regular season all by himself.

At this point, I think the Pats season will ride on how well the DEFENSE performs. Their games this year will almost certainly go from 37-14 more to 21-17, and if the defense can keep scores down they can still be a 12-win team given their scehdule and their talent base if Cassell can move the offense some and limit turnovers.
