Chris Simms unlikely to play again this year (1 Viewer)

(KFFL) Darren Lyn, of ESPNews, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Chris Simms (spleen) is unlikely to play again this season but the possibility remains for his return. Simms ruptured his spleen during Week 3 and remains in the hospital after having it removed.

First of all, I hope Simms recovers fully.

But from a team perspective (and a fantasy football perspective) how does this affect the Tampa players? I know they could not get much worse, but can they? Will Galloway or Clayton be able to get back to their old numbers?

From a fantasy standpoint, I think it kills them. I have Cadillac in a league and would take a box of donuts for him.

From a team standpoint, it puts them square in the middle of the Brady Quinn sweepstakes.

Speaking of Quinn, is he still considered a top 5 lock? The little I've watched this year, he hasn't looked too hot.

He threw for over 300 and 5 tds last weekend. But I haven't really seen him play either. It's probably a Quinn/Stanton sweepstakes.

  :lmao: Looks like I turned the Michigan State game off a little early and never went back to check the final score.

For a team with as tough a schedule as the Bucs have, this hurts a lot. The offense seemed to be gaining some momentum before Simms got hurt.

On a positive note, the guy who graded as the best OL in the preseason was rookie Davin Joseph....who should return to the lineup following the bye.

There are a solid group of veteran leaders mixed with the youth, so I could see a team that peaks later in the year. I wouldn't give up on Carnell yet. No reason to now at his current value anyway.

Agreed. Trading him now makes no sense. One can only hope that he weathers the storm.

I think it could be good or bad for Cadillac. On the one hand, they will likely try to run the ball more to protect the rookie quarterback. On the other hand, they were having a hard enough time with Simms in there. Unless the rook looks good, he'll be facing eight man fronts all day. But he may also start to catch more dumpoff passes, which would be nice in PPR leagues.

I think it's terrible for Galloway. Not only is he dealing with a rookie QB, his old QB seemed to have zoned in on him. Who knows what Lebowski will be able to do.

It can only be good for Clayton, but that's not saying much. He's been awful this year.

More likely, though, I'd expect a random WR on the team to suddenly have short term value - whoever the rook most liked to throw to when they played together. It seems like a backup QB who comes in halfway through the season brings along his favorite guy from the second team offense; I'll keep an eye out for whichever scrub he targets the most this week.

It may also be good for Alex Smith. Smith looked good this week, and may be the dumpoff guy in the short term.

Pittman may also have value as well in PPR leagues.

I would think that it cannot help. There is the slim possibility that Cadillac gets better production if the team rallies around this situation -- more the Gradkowski is a rookie than the Simms is injured part.

For what it's worth, I'm not as qualified as others to comment on the Bucs. I've not focused much on TB as I don't own a Buccaneer in any FF league except for the subscribers pool where I had Simms. His injury might eliminate me as Palmer is on bye Week 5 when I needed him or Rivers to step up. Oh well! Them's the breaks.

Maurice Stovall? Gradkowski did seem to have something going deep with Edell Shepherd in one of the preseason games, but he's not on the team any more.

i just traded cadillac for lamont jordan.

gradkowski looked good in preseason but i can't see the move helping a sputtering offense.

getting back more Olinemen will belp but it just doesn't seem to be tampa's year.

the defense isn't playing well enough to carry the offense, as has happened with other teams with crappy offenses.

cadillac might get the ball more but this just increases his chances of getting banged up.

not that jordan has any better prospects.....

I would like to also add that the opinions of some that the OL play has not been the main problem is inaccurate, IMO. Simms had no time to throw yesterday, and Carnell had no holes. Meanwhile, Delhomme could have pitched a tent and had a glass of lemonade in his backfield before the Tampa DL put any pressure on him (for most of the game).

If Joseph proves to the a stud, that will make more a positive difference for Carnell than the loss of Simms will be negative.

Didn't Gruden just say today that Simms has a chance to come back this season? The recovery time is 6-8 weeks I believe.

You downgraded.
Before we totally bury Jordan, let's first see if Art Shell's clipboard notes have translated to the Raiders' offensive gameplan this week. This is not a given. As for the Bucs, I'm going to check the waiver wire in the one league I have Michael Clayton in and pull the trigger on a drop if I deem it worthy. If nothing is clearly an improvement, then I'll see how Gradkowski looks and more importantly, how much he looks at Clayton.

Art Shell's notpad.

Could this be a time to buy low on Cadillac? Williams owner in my league is a mess at RB (Green, Gado and Addai). I wonder if He would bite on Thomas Jones For Him. He wouldn't for Addai Last week. Any thoughts?

Simms is no McNabb, so while it hurts- it may not end their season. I have heard nothing but praise for Gradowski. No way the guy is ready to play, but if he is as good as advertised, Simms might be left looking for a job.

I think that's a foregone conclusion.

I think it is tough to say that this hurts the value of the remaining TB players. Are you saying from where they are after 3 weeks or based on rankings before the season starts? I honestly think this is possibly a change that needed to happen and the injury just makes it easier. If anything, I think this may be a time to buy from frustrated TB players owners. I really don't think their floor is much lower and it's not like Simms was a pro bowl QB anyway.

The ND offensive line this year has been absolutely porous. Every play he's been scrambling for his life. It'll be the same for him in the NFL. If you give him any amount of time to stand and plant his feet, he's an excellent QB. If from the second the ball is snapped he has pressure in his face, well you get games like Michigan. I think he'll be a solid pro, depending upon the line he plays behind.

Is Peterson coming out this year?

What's the lowdown on Gradkowski? Deep ball arm or more of a west coast offense kinda guy? Comparable to a current NFL QB?

It would be interesting to replace the name Simms with Bledsoe and think back to 2001. Gradkowski was even drafted in the 6th round...

At any rate, you have what some consider a decent vet option in Tim Rattay vs a rookie QB that no team thought was worth a damn until the 6th round. If Rattay is not the true backup here, then either this team is in a world of hurt or Gradkowski is about to take the league by storm.

My $$ is on the former.

It doesn't help anything, but they weren't winning the SB with Simms as their QB. Hopefully Gradkowski steps up and cements himself as the QB of the future.

Whoa! Hate to hijack, but that's my exact threesome as well. If Rivers can do anything during Carson's bye, I'll be thrilled.

One observation I forgot to mention from my vantage point behind the Buc bench on Sunday...

Carnell Williams was jumping, dancing, and getting in the face of everyone on the bench as the Bucs were mounting the comeback.

I saw NO SIGNS AT ALL of an injured back.

They may have changed after the game, but I don't see any reason to downgrade Carnell right now due to injury.

Cadillac = Buy Low right now.

Gradkowski doesn't throw the ball on as low a trajectory as Simms did, meaning fewer Buc passes should be blocked by opposing defensive linemen. That should result in a better completion rate, which should open up some running lanes as defenses protect against the pass...

:football:

At least that is what I'm hoping for as I reach for my trading stick in leagues where I don't already own Carnell Williams.

fwiw, Gradkowski can move around. Expect some rushing yards and TDs, sorta like Frye is getting in Cleveland. I'm pretty sure Bruce is even more mobile than Frye.

I was offer Kurt Warner for Caddy today in a dynasty league.

Sounds like less than a bag of peanuts. Worst offer I have received in a long time.

Considering Simms and his 46 QB rating with 7 interceptions is/was the worst starting QB in the league, it can't hurt.

I thought I bought low on Caddy 2 weeks ago.
