My wife is an only child, no family other than her parents in the area, so we get something for them.

My side of the family is all in town.  My parents, brother is married and two kids, sister is married with three kids.  We finally stopped exchanging gifts with the adults, but still get something for each of the nieces and nephews, ranging from college to grade school.  Tempted to go the small trinket and gift card route this year instead of full on shopping for them which we have in the past.

We do not send presents to any out of town family.  My wife and I would both rather spend more on our own kids than widen the arc of who we buy for.

Best thing we've done in awhile was went to a name draw last yr for extended family. Everyone gets 1 name and received one gift

Kids get presents (nephews, nieces, cousins).  Our parents get presents.  Our siblings get to come over and eat for free as long as they don't root for the Cowboys/Raiders.  Cousins *might* get a post on facebook.

I think I'm getting off pretty easy.

My side of the family stopped buying gifts for anyone other than my Mom & Dad probably 30 years ago (we're in our 50s & 60s now).

My wife side has a grab bag exchange/steal thing for the adults which is kind of fun but kind of stupid because you can take your own present.  I always buy something I like now and hope that I end up with it.  I would prefer if we did away with the whole thing.

The other thing my wife's family does is have her brothers & sisters buy gifts for the nieces & nephews that are under age 18.  Sounds fine except that the parents end up buying the gifts "since they know what they like better" and we get billed.  Where is the fun in that?  Seems like a money grab.

IMO all of this is just not necessary.  Enjoy the time spent with one another and use the saved money for charity or better beer & wine
