CINCY Safety situation IF they sign Roy Williams.... (1 Viewer)

Bengals.Com reports his visit there went well yesterday & both HC Lewis & DC Zimmer (Williams old coach in Big D) both came away "impressed" with Roy. They also said that IF they signed him they wouldn't use a Safety rotation. Jene or others, who would sit if they sign him in your opinion. Pass Coverage has been his liability, so that would seem to make SS more likely, but who do you all think would be the starters should he sign....Also, what would be his value there? (as the S position has been good for IDP purposes there lately).

If he signs, you add Roy Williams to this mix of players.

Chinedum Ndukwe

Marvin White

Chris Crocker

Someone else???

Gut says that they keep the Ndukwe in rotation with Williams at SS and Crocker stays at FS spelled by White.

Ugh. Lewis has always seemed to have good things to say about Ndukwe and I don't see anyone who is talented enough to cover the deep middle consistently behind Williams, so this seems likely to be a depth signing should it happen. Still, I don't like the uncertainty it suggests.

And, while I've nearly sworn off my Bengal fanhood, a safety tandem of Crocker and Williams would still make me violently ill.

I think everyone is discounting the cache that Roy Williams has in the NFL. I think he is still relatively highly regarded, at least for his draw ability. Certainly enough so that he is one the better side of a rotation assuming he rotates at all.

This is a guy who made 5 pro bowls in 7 years. He was an All Pro. To suggest that he signs but he sits for Chris Crocker, Marvin White or Ndukwe is fallacy I suspect.

I think the smart money is that some team makes him their in the box safety with a payday which keeps him off the pine.

If you ever watched him play he can't cover guys at all. Liability. Pro Bowl is because he is well liked in the League.

I think Ndukwe and Crocker start with Williams coming off the bench if he signs.

I agree with this. Cincy has no NAMES on D really (as far as draws go) & lets face it, "Chin" was a 7th RD selection. He was also hurt twice last year (preseason & Week 11). His boxscore #'s were also relatively avg. I like Chins' upside (& I know a lot of guys here on the board REALLY like it) but IF they do go ahead and sign Roy I doubt its to sit on the bench. I think if thats the case he won't sign there. I think he feels he can still start somewhere (even if thats wrong) & someone will probably give him a shot.I'm not at all saying Roy is a better player than Ndukwe to be perfectly clear. Just that if he signs there, he'll probably start. (hence the "no rotation" quote from Zimmer on Bengals.com)....If they don't sign him, it shows they have more faith in Ndukwe going forward IMO.

 It would be a depth signing at best. He wont sign with the Bengals.

Make him the will linebacker and put Rivers in the middle.
Way too old for this switch... Not sure if he's tall enough either, I've seen him in person... he's a generous 6 feet on his player card. He's a lot more like 5'11 and some change, he'd get abused as a linebacker. The best post in regards to Roy Williams was that he should just be a team's in-the-box SS and get another payday. This isn't an all bad scenario, if he was to be in a rotation if would probably expand his career by 2-3 seasons.

Roy needs to land on a defense with an above average free safety that has a clear separation of duties between the safeties. I'm not sure if the Bengals are that team. Maybe St. Louis or Baltimore??

Yeah. I don't have him on any team but thought someone could try him there.I like the Bengals young safeties better than Roy unless he's a backup.

I still think he starts somewhere, way too many Pro Bowls for the bench. Some team can use him, probably just want his price down
