Cinderella Playoff Spit (1 Viewer)

I commish an auction keeper league and we’ve been discussing possible changes to playoff berths. Last year we had 2 divisions with top 2 teams from each division making the playoffs. This year we’re thinking about changing to 3 divisions which creates and opportunity to change how teams make the playoffs. My proposal is to have 3 division winners and a Cinderella team as the 4th. The Cinderella team is defined as the team with highest total points weeks 11-14.

Pros(as I see it)

Allows a team with a rough start to make moves and try to retool and make a playoff run rather than trading away pieces for cheap keepers. Keeps the league active

Cons(as others see it)

allows a team with a losing record to make the playoffs.

Thoughts?

I would advocate for season long points and not just a few weeks. You want to reward the season long player, not someone who just had a hot streak. Plus if you were one of the 3 league champions would you rather face someone on a hot streak or someone who is good but probably not as good as you.

I like the idea.  It keeps everyone involved and with a hope.  I get the idea that you don't necessarily want to just reward a team on a hot streak but no matter your record you can keep pushing to get better for that stretch of weeks to get into the playoffs.  I don't really care if a team with a losing record gets in because that is highly weighted to schedule luck.  You can be the 2nd highest scoring team every week and go 0-12.  Teams can only "control" the points they put up each week.  I like the idea of rewarding that as a wild card playoff entry.

One thing we do in one of my leagues is to have a winners bracket and a losers bracket during the playoffs. If a team loses heads up in the winners bracket during the wild card game  they fall to the losers bracket along with everyone else. Everyone in the losers bracket still has a chance to win a small amount of money based on total points during the playoffs.
