Coby Fleener creates buzz at Stanford Pro Day (1 Viewer)

Don't mess with Texas
Coby Fleener

Quarterback Andrew Luck is the headliner at Thursday’s Stanford Pro Day, but tight end Coby Fleener stole the early spotlight by ripping up the track and testing well throughout his workout.

Multiple reports had Fleener running in the mid-4.4s in the forty. ESPN’s Todd McShay had Fleener at 4.45, and so did CBS’ Bruce Feldman.

Mayock’s stopwatch read 4.51, but it’s still a very fast time for a 6-foot-6, 247-pound human being.

“That is flying at 247,” said Mayock. Mayock also reported that Fleener had a 37-inch vertical and broad jump north of 10-feet. “They’re extremely athletic numbers,” Mayock added. “Those are defensive back, wide receiver-type numbers.”

For comparison, Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski ran 4.65 with the wind and 4.73 against the wind at Arizona’s 2010 Pro Day. Gronkowski is the same height as Fleener, and 11 pounds heavier. But Fleener is much faster in a straight line.

In PFT’s first mock draft of the 2012 offseason, Fleener was the 29th overall pick.
He's looking good!!

Top 10 rookie pick now?
There are like 18 top 10 worthy rookie picks. This draft class is way good.
Not saying you're wrong, but I hear that every year.
That was definitely not the word last year... especially after Luck and Blackmon decided to return to school.
Last year had better rookies due to the number of juniors that came out.
I don't think last year's class is close to this year's class. I remember thinking if you didn't have a top 3 pick, there wasn't much depth after that. This year I'm psyched to have mid to late 2nd rounders.

What are likely landing spots? Giants might hit the sweet spot for fantasy owners, though I have no idea what overall team needs are going into draft.

He's not Gronkowski. More like Greg Olsen/Tony Scheffler/Todd Heap. Olsen and Heap each went 31st in their respective NFL Drafts.

There's a record number (65) of underclassmen in this draft. The previous record was 56 last year.

Its funny because I was watching/listening to NFLN while they were talking about the pro day but I think before Fleener ran the drills. Casserly and maybe the other guy were saying he's not a 1st round pick, Mayock was saying he is, but as a slot TE. The numbers Im reading here would back up Mayock's thinking of Fleener lining up outside a lot.

I wonder if the Colts would take both Luck and Fleener?

Had the same thought. Would fill a need with a quality player, make their star prospect happy and add some instant chemistry to the offense.

I'm skeptical about 40 times on Pro Days. Run the 40 on the track at the Combine, or on your fast track at a Pro Day?

LSU Rueben Randle

Combine - 4.50, 4.56

Pro Day - 4.33, 4.37

Morris Claiborne

Combine - 4.50

Pro Day - 4.39

I don't think Fleener gets past the Colts. The question is now would the Colts need to trade back into the 1st round to get him.
Well, I dont see why the Giants wouldnt take him at 32 with Ballard and now Martellus Bennett at TE, although they do have needs at DB and LB, so Im thinking Colts would need to trade up to get him.

Richardson averages out AJ Green but nobody else averages out Julio jones... This draft is much, much deeper thoughI would take the top of last years draft and the depth of this years draft.

Huh?Both WRs look like great dynasty WRs but I dont get the cut of your jib. Green may be better than Julio even right now, while Julio has a better QB and another very good WR to take pressure off him.

I'm talking about the rookie class's2011

AJ Green

Julio Jones

2012

Trent Richardson

there is no Julio Jones, or second elite prospect in this draft class. but like I said, this years class is much deeper.

I don't have Blackmon that far behind Julio if he goes to the Rams.

Good article that explains why Combine and Pro day times are not really compariable: http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Last-word-on-40-times.html
Somewhat related, I wrote something a few weeks ago on why you should only pay attention to times at the combine. To believe that Wright's final combine time (whenever it's released) is wrong you have to believe that the starter failed to notice Wright's 'hand moved early' but that all three of the people initiating timers saw it and started the clock early. On both runs. And you have to ask yourself is it more likely that something extremely unusual happened, or is it more likely that Wright is slower than everyone thought he was? Occam's Razor for me, thanks.

40 times are THE most overrated indicator when scouting a player. I cringe when I hear a player shoot up the board on timed speed alone.

Not sure when it will happen, but someday there will be a better way of determining true (game) speed. Whether it's having players run with pads & helmet on, not sure, but it would be more accurate. Or maybe a scientific way of timing speed and quickness or possibly measuring both on film somehow.

You could go through this whole thought process, or you could just watch him play and see that he's not a 4.6 WR...

Jim Miller repeatedly mentioned that he though Fleener was more of a 4.8 guy and it was bugging me. Does anyone follow him on twitter to send him a link to this thread?
