Collinsworth-less (1 Viewer)

Am I just that clueless about football analysis to recognize whatever he says that people hate so much? I hear this all the time about Collinsworth and I have no idea what's wrong with what he says.
You hear it about every color commentator. For each one there is a noisy contingent of people who love to whine about perceived flaws.

It's baffling that anyone cares. People just like to complain.

And his "Jawann Taylor lined up in the slot" comment was hilarious btw.

He says some stupid stuff like, "Without Kelce and Jones tonight, the world is going to find out how good Patrick Mahomes is." Like the 2 MVPs and 2 Superbowls weren't enough. A week 1 game is the cherry on top for certifying Mahomes greatness.

that was his best line of the night

honestly we had the volume at low level, the cheering and our own chatter was louder than the broadcast

we don't NEED CC to tell us what is in front of us

we were too busy enjoying the game (or silently praying....or chain smoking [one guy kept popping out & watching non his phone]....or doing laps around the LR/Kitchen :lmao:. )

wish I could figure out a reliable way to sync my tv with the Dan Miller radio broadcast (Lions longtime play by play guy), easy on my devices but difficult when streaming on the LG

I thought it was ballsy for him to continually call out Taylor for being off the line and there being no flag. Analysts typically say something like that once and let it go, but he was mocking it for several plays.

With the sync issue, it usually takes a couple seconds (during the opening kickoff) halting the TV broadcast for the radio to catch up, but once you get it pretty close, it works really well and it so much more enjoyable.

Doubt many would even notice Taylor was doing that without Collinsworth pointing it out.

IN before all the "Oh yeah I was all over that" comments.

had trouble doing it last year (watched all the games on Sling)

didn't get NFL ticket or YouTube, we just watch broadcasts games streaming on Sling or Peacock or what not

I'm not the most savvy old guy but it's easy to be precise on my iPhone, iPad or MacBook - not so much on the tv using the Apple remote

could also mirror cast to the TV but I'm multitasking all game long (here, FF league, texting friends, looking at Twitter) so prefer not to tie up a devcice

Trying to sync is difficult, particularly if you are streaming games vs watching the broadcast and if you are watching locally or nationally.

Even if you get it right at some point things like lag, live broadcast delay and not quite exactly timed commercial breaks will unsync it pretty quickly.

I know it was discussed on at least one pregame YT video I watched

I was aware of it last year bc he was doing it when the Lions blew out the Jaguars - that back leg is his timing leg

(aside - Hutch abused him but he wasn't holding as much and didn't offset so much from the RG)

that part is fine, you just can't move your front leg

the offset was out of control and mistiming of the snap - that was egregious

it's this for me. i like him fine as a commentator in general and he's better than most, but when he calls out people it's cringeworthy. love the comments he makes about when he played the game too... chris when you played the game linemen werent 300 lbs running sub 5 40s.

He just repeats himself endlessly and his same anecdotal BS carries over into every team. That is where they quote, "Now here's a guy..."

I believe last night he said something about Justin Watson being the guy who stretches the field for them. Justin Watson hasn't had a year with more than 15 receptions. He actually doesn't have any specific role in any offense he has ever been on. You are better off saying that than hyping up a guy who will be lucky to catch 30 balls this year. I'd rather hear him talk about how his usage correlates to the absence of Travis Kelce or what they are trying to do with him. Instead he takes the easy way and says he's a stretch the field burner because his reception was 26 yards.

In his defense though, most announcers generally suck.

By the way, it's just Cris - no h necessary for this idiot.

That's fair. I guess he just meant, "Mahomes ability to carry a depleted team is truly going to be put to the test tonight." But yeah, like nobody knew he was great before. I wouldn't take that as a slight toward Mahomes though. But yeah I can see how a commentator could say a lot of things off the cuff -- you don't really have the time to craft sentences with tact when speaking live, though I guess there are certain people who do have that gift -- that would be taken the wrong way.

Calling a game isn't as easy as most sports fans think. I absolutely loved Collinsworth in the begining. First few years he was kind of a breath of fresh air from the traditional NFL films like voices. Then I grew tired of his off topic rants. I don't hate the guy and think I still prefer him over a handful of others. I also really liked Romo in the beginning. Then grew tired of his act also. Just my opinion but I still prefer Troy and Buck over most other options. I will say my dvr and red zone changed the way I also watch football. I forward a lot now and stick to highlights

While I don't dislike Collinsworth, he tends to talk a lot and THAT is annoying. Muted most of the 4th quarter. Problem solved.

I would not have caught his position being behind the center, but it was obvious as heck he was taking a step back before the snap. I noticed that numerous times.

I don't like muting the broadcast, because the play by play does bring to it those things that may not be readily apparent from just the visual, plus I do like a little crowd noise in the background. And some guys are really good at it, many aren't. Honestly, I've found pairing up the radio PBP guys much better at the overall experience when coupled with the TV broadcast a much better, more enjoyable and informative product than the "Look at Me" guys like Collinsworth, Romo...that ramble on and on and love to hear themselves yack.

I almost never even notice who's calling the game. I mean, I know that the game is on NBC, so that means Tirico and Collinsworth, but once the ball is kicked off it mostly just fades into the background for me. I've honestly never understood people who get worked up about the announcers. I've especially never understood the people who are convinced the announcer is biased against their (and only their) team

When I was in college I minored in broadcast communications, and through a good interview, I got to call Minnesota Twins games on the radio straight out of school, and I was good at it, and enjoyed it...for about 3 weeks. Quit during the summer and pretty much lost all interest in baseball forever. Calling a game is incredibly difficult, (football is probably easier than baseball as more things happen) but its incredibly tedious, and at a certain point everything just runs together. 2 months in, I couldn't remember if something happened in the 4th inning or 4 games ago. Your brain just goes on autopilot, which is probably why so many announcers once they find their niche, stick to the same tropes "here's a guy..."

Anyway, Collinsworth is probably my favorite color commentator after Romo, because Romo brings some enthusiasm that is pretty rare to me. I'd be 100% on board with a Gus Johnson/Tony Romo booth. I think Collinsworth was best with Al Michaels, Mike Tirico doesn't have as strong of a personality to keep Collinsworth focused, I think.

To the contrary, he provides the deepest actual game related insight of any commentator short of maybe Tony Romo. But like Romo (though to a lessor extent) he sometimes says some silly stuff while trying to fill in the silence on the airwaves. The people that don't really care about the actual football insight tend to lean on those.

Some guys are good conversationalists that don't really provide much insight about football, and some people like that. Collinsworth and Romo are mediocre conversationalists that provide some really great insight about football. If people don't care about that insight, they tend to like those guys less since they're not as good at just talking about nothing.

I think we can all agree Justin Watson isn't the Chiefs designated stretch the field guy. I actually disagree with Collinsworth providing any actual knowledge relative to the sport. I'm not sure how you make it better but talking about what types of plays are being called to scheme toward what the other team is calling seems like a decent start.

You could get pretty deep into the weeds on football and have 11 guys to choose from but ****ty commentators like Collinsworth tend to focus on where the ball went rather than an overview of the play and why it developed into that pass or the running lanes closed. At some point, you have to admit... you've brought this ex player in to analyze the game and his analysis of the game pretty well sucks.

That pretty well sums it up.

Any CC that gets popular is going to be hated. A bunch of Twitter doobs hating on him is pretty much just a sign that he's made it.

I don't personally love him, but I really don't care.

The one good time to actually complain about a CC is Buck during the Moss moon. Buck was completely out of line, and screwed that up.

Buck became less horrible over the years, but that level of pearl clutching on that day was really offensive.

I literally couldn't disagree with you more here. All the things you say you want are exactly the things Collinsworth does 50x more than any other non-Romo announcer.

Yes the Watson thing was silly but anyone talking for 3 hours is going to say some silly stuff. Collinsworth constantly talks about scheme, formations, and a zillion other things, and he almost always notices it all during the play before even a replay is shown. He's the guy that gets giddy when a play ends because he's excited to go through the replay of how the running lane closed out because 2 and a half quarters ago the DT ran a stunt two plays in a row from this formation to set up this play in the 4th quarter where he would line up the same but fake the stunt.

I'm actually blown away by your take, because again, short of maybe Romo, he's the guy that far and away focuses on those things the most of any commentator.

I can't stand Romo's voice, but I overlook it.

The NFL would never go for it, in the name of the "clean image" they want to portray (nvm beating women, drugs, happy endings, etc.), but it would be rad if someone like Tom Segura did it.

Y'all obviously never spent even a few years living in the Detroit market.

When you consistently get saddled with the 5th / 6th / 7th string crew, you realize that job ain't for everyone.
  1. Chris Myers & Robert Smith (Fox Myers gets a new partner every year)
  2. Spero Dedes & Jay Feely (CBS 7th string crew - always gets the worst game of the week)
  3. Steve Levy, Louis Riddick, & Dan Orlovsky (ESPN B team)
  4. Rich Eisen, Michael Irvin, Steve Mariucci, & Kurt Warner (NFLN)
That's pretty much the Four Horseman of the apocalypse of announcing crews.

I was in the car for the 3rd quarter last night and Warner was on the radio doing the game for Westwood 1.
