Computer guys, perplexing problem (1 Viewer)

Trying to fix my brothers computer........

His internet is slow and intermittent.

Seems fairly easy, check router, modem etc........ Only problem is, every other device on the network works fine. Two iPads and two phones. Only his computer is the problem.

I brought it to my house to work on it, the internet flies. No problems at all. Back to his house, same thing, it comes and goes and is slow.

WTF?

The only thing that I can think of, is maybe it's the wireless printer they have? It has it's own web address etc. Could it be trying to access the same port? Is that a thing?

Can anyone offer an opinion here?

:wall:

Is this a tower or a laptop? Hard wired or wifi?
ASUS Laptop, wireless
Perhaps their modem is transmitting at a band or frequency that the card can't handle. If the router is transmitting via 5Ghz, change it to 2.5. If the bandwidth is 40mhz, change it to 20. Try those and see if that helps.
if you don't know how to do this, tell me what the model of the router is.
I'm going to go over there on the weekend, will report back, thank you for your help.

Sure! Happy to help. Just wasn't around after I first responded.

If it's a dual-band wireless router, perhaps he has a baby monitor, wireless camera, or other device that overlaps one of the bands. That could explain why it only interferes with one device and not others (i.e. the other devices use the 2.5 GHz band, while only the laptop uses 5 GHz).

If you are standing next to the router is it still slow? what if you hardwire the laptop to the router? As suggested i would try changing the channel and see how that works. Its likely something with the wireless settings and either interference or bad reception.

I apologize if this is too obvious a suggestion....

Make sure it is connecting to your brother's wifi, and not a wifi that is unencrpyted down the street. That could easily explain the behavior you see,

This is his Time Warner Router/Modem

He said it was a TH862, but I can't find one so i'm pretty sure this is the one.
Any idea how many wifi radios the router has? The problem might be a case of the router having only a single radio, which is running on a "mixed" signal and frequently switching its broadcast signal between either a/b/g/n 2.4 ghz and 5.0 ghz. If most of your devices have wifi adapters that can support all of these standards, then they will operate fine despite all the switching. But if laptop in question's adapter only supports 2.4 ghz (no 5 ghz capability), then its wireless performance would likely suffer when the router's radio switches its signal to 5 ghz.

So, I'd look into the specs of the laptop's adapter to see if it supports 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz. The reason that the laptop would not have a problem in your house could be that your home router has two radio's, and thus always has one radio transmitting in the 2.4 ghz band.

A solution to this problem would be simple. Edit the router's settings to have a fixed frequency of 2.4 ghz wireless N. Alternatively, you can get a new router for your brother that has two or more radio's, and fix one of those radios to the 2.4 ghz band while leaving the other in mixed mode.

Just one thought on where your problem might lie. hope it helps.

My desktop has finally reached dinosaur status. Looking for advice or recommendations for a new one.

My main activities are e-mail,paying bills, surfing the net and playing fantasy football.

I'm looking for something inexpensive that can handle those duties. I'm assuming anything I get now will be

a huge upgrade to what I have in terms of speed, storage, processor, etc.

Not interested in a laptop or tablet.

Any ideas from those more in the know than I?

Thanks in advance.

price range?

You said your not interested in a laptop or tablet. Does that mean you want a desktop? Ultrabook?
