Conscience case what would you do . (1 Viewer)

Traders2001

Footballguy
Dynasty league 12 teams with a salary cap. Not a money league just friends and family ( And this league has been on for like 15 years )

A few weeks before that dog fighting story came out i traded Vick to my son , the trade was very even id say ( Of course now it does nt look very good ).

He got Vick - Brandon Jones and Jamal Lewis

i got Bulger and Michael Turner .

Since then i alrady traded Turner for Ronnie Brown .

But now that i know he wont play in 2007 i feel bad , i am looking for a way to compensate him a bit ( i feel like i have to give him someone close to Bulger,s value ) but i dont have many draft picks in this years rookie ( Since i keep trading picks and player quite often , that s where my team name comes from " Traders " ).

Do you think a first round rookie pick in 2008 would be a decent compensation ( I usually pick between 7 and 11 th ) .

Since he only has Romo has a starting QB on his team ( He also has Aaron Rodgers ) if i include Trent Green plus the pick i think it s fair enough what do you think.

I know half of this post does nt really belong in this forum ( The compensation part ) but i need like a second and third opinion.

Thanks guys.

If i had traded him to someone else then my son i would not even ask the question , but this is a litle touchy .

If you want to do your son a favor because a) he's your son and b) you want him not to feel bummed about the upcoming season, then offer him compensation. But recognize that, were this a regular league and this was just a friend with no emotional ties, you have ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to compensate him. There are inherent risks in any trade. Vick's legal issues are, in many ways, no different than if he got in a motorcycle accident and tore up his knee a few weeks after the deal. Would you feel compelled to make good on the trade in that situation? I'm guessing not.

You answered your own question at the bottom. If it had been anyone else, you'd be thanking your good fortune. Non-issue. Unless your son is 4 years old, then he (and you) simply need to live with it. Giving him something now to make him feel better is silly. I was in a league with some FBG'ers wherein the commish decided to give the Ricky Williams owner another first round pick when he suddenly retired. Needless to say, that didn't sit well with the league.

Actually .

I traded with him for James a few years back and in his first game on my team James blew up his knee and he has never been the same .

Then the year after that i traded James for Ricky Williams ( Guess what Williams retired , he did nt even play a single game on my team )

.

So guys you are right a deal is a deal ( And its not like i saw that coming, i think no one saw this one coming ) .

I think...you should offer compensation to the guy that traded you Ronnie Brown for Michael Turner before you offer anything for a Mike Vick trade (before the story broke)....even if it's your son.

I hope you included quite a bit in the deal in addition of Turner for Brown.

You need to make fun of him for accepting that trade with all the controversy around Vick and the invesigation. Teach him to do his due diligence.

Sometimes kids need to learn hard lessons about life.

What would the other people in the league say if you made a one-sided trade to compensate him for Vick?

It would not be ethical to compensate a team just because they made a trade for a player who didn't wind up playing. It's basically a form of collusion.

Caveat emptor.

I added Brandon Marshall. The gy needed your WR and is loaded at RB ( LT , LJ , Maroney , Reggie Bush ) so he can wait 1 year for Turner.

If you compensate him, others in the league might complain "foul". I would consider it. The deal was fair up front, your son will learn from this, keep your (and your son's) integrity.

You had no responsibility in what happened. It wasn't even a questionable situation where you had prior knowledge of that the other owner in a trade didn't.

One team giving up assets to another like this is exactly the kind of situation that a league has a commissioner to prevent. It isn't fair that one team gets after-the-effect compensation for a trade that went bad when other teams don't.

You're more likely to create disharmony in your league amongst the other owners who (rightfully so) would believe the action is unfair. And you put your commissioner in the bad situation where his duty to enforce what is fair to all teams in the league requires him to overrule your act that was meant out of good intentions and kindness.

That isn't a very nice way to reward a commissioner for the work he does, nor is it a very nice thing to do to the rest of your league. That you feel bad for your son is enviable. But please think through the consequences of your actions on the entire league and not just on your son.

Edit to add: Missed the follow up by the OP. Good decision.
