Pet Sounds is the eleventh studio album by the American rock band the Beach Boys, released on May 16, 1966, by Capitol Records. It was produced, arranged, and primarily composed by Brian Wilson with guest lyricist Tony Asher. Recorded largely between January and April 1966, it furthered the orchestral sound introduced in The Beach Boys Today! (1965). Initially promoted as "the most progressive pop album ever", Pet Sounds is recognized for its ambitious production, sophisticated harmonic structures, and coming of age themes. It is widely regarded as among the greatest and most influential albums in music history.
I biffed this too -- but I've never owned a physical copy and have rarely listened to it in its entirety. I tend to take the Beach Boys on a song-by-song basis. Nonetheless, this album stretched the idea of what a pop record was supposed to do, and you can still hear that to this day -- it has not become quaint or subject to "...for its time" qualifiers.

Thought this album had a shot at №1 overall
Yes - lower than I thought.

Let’s work on this @Don Quixote. My better judgment says God Only Knows due to its iconic status.

I believe that was the highest-scoring Beach Boys song in the US countdown.

Yep, gotta go chalk here with that, I think. I know Sloop John B is an FFA favorite too, but God Only Knows is about as perfect as a song can get.

Lower than I thought too. Thought had a chance for #1 since did not think they would get as much album splitting as some others.

Sounds good to me. Caroline No was actually the highest ranked song (#2) in my MAD countdown, but GOK is probably one of the count-on-one-hand most amazing song accomplishments in music history.

Will add now.

Animals is the tenth studio album by the English rock band Pink Floyd, released on 21 January 1977, by Harvest Records and Columbia Records. It was produced by the band at their new studio, Britannia Row Studios, in London throughout 1976. The album continued the long-form compositions of Pink Floyd's previous works, such as Meddle (1971) and Wish You Were Here (1975).

Animals is another concept album by Pink Floyd, that focuses on the sociopolitical conditions of mid-1970s Britain. Tensions during the recording culminated in the resignation of the keyboardist, Richard Wright, two years after the album's release. The cover, conceived by the bassist and lead songwriter, Roger Waters, and designed by their long-time collaborator Storm Thorgerson, shows an inflatable pig floating between two chimneys of Battersea Power Station.

I have the FFA to thank yet again for my love of another band - Floyd. I had always thought they were OK, I liked the hits, etc.. I had never heard of Animals let alone listen to it until some draft or musical adventure way back when we first started doing them. I decided to keep an open mind, tried it, and was blown away. It's been one of my favorite albums since that point. I played it a ton in the car when it had a CD player and it would always weird out the kids a little with the animal noises. I only had 2 Floyd albums on the countdown, mostly because I'm an idiot and forgot about one. I don't love all the early stuff, but the 5 that will show up in the countdown I love and I listen to the 87 and 94 albums quite a bit too. I have a biography about them sitting on the shelf I need to get to as well.

Why hasn't somebody done them for a MAD31?

I absolutely never listened to Pink Floyd as a youth. The year was 2001, I was on two hits of acid and a lot of weed. I watched Pink Floyd The Wall. I sat there for its entirety. Barely moving, barely speaking. I became a man that day. Anything Floyd is damn legit. Pink Floyd Animals? Your damn right Pink Floyd Animals...

Animals is my 4th favorite of the Big 4 by The Floyd, so it didn't make my list due to my 3 albums per bands/artists personal restriction, but Animals would've been a top 25 album for me had I not had that rule. Roger Waters was at his peak lyrically in the mid to late 70s, Animals is some of his best work in that regard.

I am pleasantly surprised to see the Boston debut finish this high. Of course, I agree with it, given where I ranked it, but I wasn't sure how it would do here. The best debut album of the classic rock era? Yes, without a doubt.

It’s Sean not Julian, but yeah that was amazing. Really bummed I missed that concert near me because I was away. Never knew how good Sean was on guitar. Dad must be beaming with pride.

we are at 5 albums by artists appearing for the first time on the list
By my count it's much, much higher than 5.
** since Michael Jackson's Thriller
OK, seems an arbitary starting point. It's not much higher than 5, but it is higher
It wasn’t arbitrary.

Someone at the time posited that MJ might be the final new artist on the countdown. That point was debunked quickly and the over/under was set at 5.5

thread gets ruined by Christmas music talk???

I hate Christmas music - except for Christmas Eve and Day (and the day the tree is being put up and decorated.)

Stop playing Christmas music in November!!!
don't expect a christmas card from me this year
I like Christmas traditions. If I listen to Christmas music in October, I feel like there’s much better music to listen to- save the music for the season. I exaggerated a little. The music can start mid-December.

Sean and Les have a band “the Lennon Claypool Delerium”

I once described them as “the Beatles on acid” but quickly saw the error of my way.

I will let Rock do his own explaining but I am pretty sure you didn't miss anything. I don't think he put Pet Sounds on his list.

Oh hey. I picked Today!, which is Brian Wilson’s first album and attempt at personal, emotional songwriting. I was not thinking strategy when I did my first albums on the list, and by the time I was done, I didn’t want to alter it. Today! is not a great pick in retrospect, but it’s easily my second or third favorite Beach Boys’ record. I don’t even think I ranked Today! that highly. Sort of a whiff here, but The Beach Boys were represented.

Also, honestly, I might have played Pet Sounds just too much over the years to even consider doing that. “God Only Knows” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” used to always give me goose bumps. Now it’s rare for that to happen. It’s sad but it’s true and l can’t be twenty-three or twenty-four forever (I wish!). I truly loved that first blast of Endless Summer—which is also why I picked Today!—and then Pet Sounds back then. I also got gentle **** from my peers an awful lot for doing so but thankfully I had one guy in each of my main peer groups that was a fan of them and understood.

Don’t forget, the Go-Go’s finished number one on a bright sunshine-y day, :)

Along with Leviathan and Crack the Skye IMO these guys have 4 perfect, 10/10 metal album
but you don't like their other 4?
I really like them all. 4 are perfect, and where i would start first, the others have a song here or there i dont like, or the albums top to bottom don't flow as well. Crack the Sky would be my #3. Very powerful, emotional stuff from Brann about his sister in that one.. I do like The Hunter and Once More around the Sun a ton too. Those woukd be my 5th and 6th choices. Their debut and most recent i listen to the least.

You going to try some?

Why hasn't somebody done them for a MAD31?
For me they always were an album band and not a song band, but they’d be a nice inclusion.
Wasn’t there also a Pink Floyd song ranking thread not to long ago too?
Found it here….

Can’t believe it’s been over two years since we did that.

Animals is my favorite Floyd album because it has both the incredible space-rock instrumental passages they were known for and a real bite to the music and lyrics -- I agree that these are Roger Waters' best lyrics, as I think he started to go off the rails soon after. My suggestion for the playlist is obvious -- I ranked "Dogs" #1 in Anarchy's Floyd countdown and in the British Isles countdown. David Gilmour's playing is otherworldly. It may be my second-favorite song of all time after "Cortez the Killer."

I understand how this happens but if people voted for best album out of this llst, who do you think wins?

I don’t think LZ1 beats any of these. Maybe Meat Loaf and Arcade Fire, but I don’t think necessarily so. LZ got plenty of love here for a hard rock band that borrowed so liberally from others that came before.

Couldn't disagree more. I like many of these other albums, some quite a lot, but very few warrant being rated in the company of LZI. It's all opinions, so I'll just leave it at that.

When I saw the Go-Go's come up as your #1, I honestly thought you'd Binky'd it and it was supposed to be #70. I'd have thought with a moderate amount of confidence that Pet Sounds would be your #1. We all put together our lists in different ways (some of us by accidentally deleting four (as of now) of their favorite albums). No wrong answers.

I will give Animals a listen. I haven't listened to much Pink Floyd in 20 years. Never dug much beyond the 3 biggest albums and my tastes drifted away from their style
I was just listening to it, but wasn’t working for me. Not trying to anti-Thumper or anything. Just wasn’t for me. Prefer some of Pink Floyd’s other stuff more (that said, didn’t rank any by them).

I mean, it's ok to say you don't think something.

like a "No BP, I don't like that album" is ok but a "BP, that was the worst thing I've ever listened to and my eardrums are thankful that it's finally over. Your taste in music makes me feel sad for the future of humanity." is probally something someone thinks but you shouldn't say.

I agree and much more palatable to knock an album that comes out at 15 than at 215. Obviously lots of people love the albums in this part of the countdown almost to the point where someone who doesn't is more the outlier. Being harsh about a Beatles album that 20 people ranked vs being harsh about a metal album 2 people ranked feels like the difference between saying something nasty about Jeff Bezos vs saying something nasty about your local Amazon driver.

You going to try some?
yes. I've already listed to the first 3 tracks on Emperor of Sand. That's one of the 4 I'm supposed to listen to right?
Sure. I think that is the best place to start. If you like it at all, and don't mind some of the heavier songs on that one like Clandestiny and Scorpion breath, I would try one of the others. Emperor and Blood Mountain are my 1a/1b, when I did the countdown I was more in the mood of Blood Mountain so I gave it more points.

For real though, is there an album with better opening and close songs than Who’s Next? Both are absolute epics.

I wish I had some good thoughts on Pet Sounds. I was a big Beach Boys fan early on in life. Those harmonies are the best I’ve ever heard. But it wasn’t until Brian Wilson released his Smile album that I went back to Pet Sounds as an album. I knew it was acclaimed but I had no idea what I was getting into. A truly unique album which I appreciate a lot.
