Consensus Top 350 Albums of All-Time: 250. Gentlemen – The Afghan Whigs (107 Viewers)

Dr. Octopus

Footballguy
Much like @Scoresman did with Television shows and horror films and @kupcho1 did with novels and @John Maddens Lunchbox did for U2 songs, I am going to collect a list of each participant's Top 70 albums, and tally up and present the results in a slow roll-out.

My only "rule" is no "greatest hits" compilations. Otherwise no restrictions as to genres or format.

Let's shoot for a deadline for submissions at July 1st.

Submissions should be formatted as

Album Name - Artist - points

points should be in reverse of the ranking meaning your top album gets 70 points, second favorite 69 points and so on until you're 70th album gets 1 point.

It would be helpful if lists are submitted from a excel spreadsheet - but not necessary.

So "live" albums such as "Frampton Comes Alive" or Kiss "Alive" are ok?
Yes - my preference would be no "greatest hits" live albums but more time and place live albums (like the two you mentioned) but I don't want to deal with minutia and will leave it up to people to self-police on that.

Also, this is "albums" as in us older people still call all of the releases "albums" or limited to vinyl only?

All right! I'll submit a list, but there will be some pretty big gaps because I don't have an album-aware sense for a lot of the music I listen too, but I do have fond memories of some great ones that I hope to prop up.

I think I'll participate but I have a question. Are mono albums acceptable? Or do all submissions need to be stereo recordings?

Also, I don't love the idea of including various artists, but if we do, the only various artist albums that should be allowed are those consisting of songs that only first appeared on that various artists album.

Yes, mono albums are acceptable .

I agree and I'm trying to avoid compilations generally - but I'm also not going to over-police it. If people try "work arounds" or want to get cute by including things like "Freedom Rock" - those albums aren't likely to make the top 300 any way.

Yeah, that’s all that I had in mind when I was asking the question, similar to the Phil Spector example that I used. Definitely won’t be including something like Time-Life’s Sound of the 80’s, Volume 9 or whatever.

Speaking of monos, I got an email yesterday for a presale of a new edition of the "Beatles in Mono" set that's been out of print for 10+ years. Now the rare edition of it that I own is going to lose its value. :kicksrock: @rockaction

I thought of you yesterday when I saw it. Did you see the thread I started? I did consider the value hit but for whatever reason didn’t have you caring, which is silly because I care when I take a forty buck hit, never mind what the mono box sets were going for. Sorry, k4, I didn’t even order one and they gone.

Good to see you. I was muzzled for a bit.

I see now that there was a thread. I wouldn't have posted about it if I had known. Anyway, I would never sell my set, so the value piece really shouldn't matter to me. Glad that you are back!!

Scratching Freedom Rock off the list.

OK, I did a quick 60 bouncing back and forth between my annual playlists. One thing quickly became clear: I don't really listen to albums anymore and haven't (much) since 2011 when Spotify was available here. That said
  • Oldest album on the list - 1963
  • Newest album on the list - 2013 (although this will be the first tossed overboard if I think of something else; 2009 is a pretty safe best as what I'll submit as newest)
  • 1960s - 5
  • 1970s - 16
  • 1980s - 17
  • 1990s - 7
  • 2000s - 14
  • 2010s - 1 (hanging on by a thread)
I was pretty much checked out in the 90s. I'm surprised I have 7 from that decade.

I'm sure I'll revisit this a couple thousand times between now and Bastille Day.
