Corporations don’t care about political issues: Disney Edition (1 Viewer)

Now, the truth is they very much DO care about political issues, but not in being moral or “right” on issues; they simply will take whatever position makes them the most money.

Disney not only filmed parts of Mulan in parts of China where human rights abuses are taking place, they actually thanked the government entities who are responsible for the murders and genocide taking place.

In Xinjiang, China has been rounding up the Uighur Muslims and putting them in labor camps. There are reports that they have performed forced sterilizations, removed organs from living healthy folks for organ transplants and left the person to die, etc etc.

Disney not only filmed part of the movie Mulan in those same areas while this stuff was going on, they thanked multiple local Communist PR agencies and the police group involved with these atrocities.

The linked article even points out that Disney kowtowed to China when releasing the original version of Mulan because China was angry about Disney’s involvement with a movie about the Dalai Lama. Eisner even came out and said that the movie about the Dalai Lama was a mistake and basically buried it to please China.

Remember all this the next time Disney does anything political. Sure, they might be coming out and supporting some cause you also support, but you can be assured that they are only doing so because they’ve calculated that taking that position is the majority position and will be more financially advantageous for them. You can rest assured that if they determine that supporting the exact opposite position is more financially advantageous at some point, they will change positions in a heartbeat.

If they filmed in usa they would be denounced by the media for filming a Chinese based film in America.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Ala the NBA and China. You won`t be seeing  "Free Hong Kong" on the back of jerseys or painted on the court anywhere. Let alone all the other atrocities that take place there. $$$$$ talks.  In fact fans have been removed from NBA arenas in the past for wearing Hong Kong t-shirts.

Woke?  Nope they are still  sleeping.

I was wondering when somebody would start a thread on this.  For some reason, Disney and the NBA get a free pass when it comes to collaborating with genocide.

Edit: Before somebody chimes in with this, no, "collaborating with genocide" is not hyperbole in the case of these two firms.  Please just go ahead and skip to argument #2 in this chain.

Edit Part II: Also, Trump is an #######.  Please skip over the whataboutism about how Trump sucks up to Winnie the Pooh.

The truth is that nobody really cares. And Disney, the NBA, and other corporations know that. They know that if they suck up to and please China’s government and legitimize their atrocities by partnering with them, that it opens up the largest market in the world to them when otherwise they would be completely blocked. They are at zero risk of being blocked from the US and European markets for their compliance with monsters and not nearly enough people will vote with their wallets to matter. China is 2.5 times the market size as far as purchasers go as the US and Europe combined.

Everyone likes to pretend that they would have opposed Hitler and his genocide a century ago, but the brutal truth is that there are massive genocides going on right now throughout the world and nobody gives a crap as long as their kid can watch the latest Disney movie or they can watch the next NBA playoff game.

My daughter is from Taiwan. She is Chinese. I would love for her to be able to watch a movie where the hero looks like her. But not in this case. Not when the makers of the movie have straight up thanked murderous monsters who helped them make the movie. It’s honestly not that far off from going and watching a movie where they thank Joseph Goebbels in the end credits for helping make the movie.

Now imagine they'd shown this much love to Israel. There's your political conundrum of the day. Why, and this is hypothetical but one can imagine, PR and flak-catching-wise, is it easier to admit to and laud relationships with a murderous regime over the only democracy in the Middle East?

I think we all know the answer. The flak-catchers are always having to respond to the supposedly voiceless radical left in this country and have little time to concern themselves with true humanitarian concerns.

South Park nailed this last season.  In fact if you watch the past 3 years of South Park they have done a show about everything in the political forum.

And most of it spot on.

All depends which way the PC winds are blowing...

Woke America considers non woke white people a bigger threat than China.
I'm not entirely sure who qualifies as "woke", but I certainly think there's an argument to be made that Trump and his clear abuse of power is a bigger threat to the United States than China.

10 posts.  That's how long it took before somebody took a story that has literally nothing whatsoever to do with Trump and turned into a story about Trump.

Well, technically I did it in post #4, but I was being ironic.  I didn't actually expect somebody to do that in earnest quite so quickly.

Had absolutely nothing to do with the OP, which wasn't even about measuring threat levels. Just totally off the wall.

Disney is also the company that, back in 2016 (?) issued a statement that they would have a hard time continuing to film in Georgia (TWD) if Georgia passed the first heartbeat law that was stricter on abortions once life was determined.

So, to recap, they give a shout out for being able to film near the death camps but seem to have a heartburn with their future customers by coming down so pro-abortion.

I don't want Disney or any company playing politics.  I don't want them FOR or AGAINST Democratics, Republicans, pro-lifers, sweatshops, or anything. I just want them providing a needful or useful product to people in a responsible and effective way.

File this under another issue IDGAF about

Stick it with chick fila, walmart home depot and whatever other outrage
