Costco Love <3 (3 Viewers)

Honestly, I've never had to go back and pay for something they missed, and they've caught an extra charge twice. So it's saved me like $100
I read an article that out of 87.2 million stops they have zero "didn't get charged" catches and 3 "double charge" catches total. Ha ha
That seems unlikely

And to some extent it's just a deterrent.

Of mine, one double charge is because I'm a moron who can't use self checkout properly I guess.

If there are 2 people checking receipts at the door do you choose right or left early or do you try to force it to stay just 1 line until the very last minute?
you can just walk out without getting your receipt checked. there have been numerous lawsuits about this. they can't make you present a receipt. they train everyone not to stop you if you decline.
They claim it's actually more likely to benefit you because it'll catch something double-charged
that's just to avoid liability. either way, they can't compel you to show a receipt.
Aren't you also a lawyer? I disagree with you on this.
Not sure what you disagree with. Courts have been consistent that stores can't force you to show a receipt to exit. Membership places like Costco can make it part of their membership agreement, but they train their employees not to detain anyone that declines.
I suppose I disagree with "they can't make you present a receipt."

It's a membership, and that's a condition, and it's not discriminatory.

I don't think they would detain anyone, but they certainly could revoke the membership.

Idk what else it would be except compulsion to say if you ignore it, we will revoke the membership.
Last time. They are trained not to confront anyone about not showing a receipt, because they don't want to get sued. Regardless of what the membership agreement says. One of my friends is in house counsel. We've had this conversation.

How are they going to revoke your membership for walking out? You think they're going to spend the time going back through video to find you? Facial recognition?

It's a deterrent and not that big of a deal, since most people will wait in line to comply. They are also lying about why they do it. It's absolutely to prevent shoplifting and has nothing to do with makng sure the cashiers gave you everthing you purcchased.

There are plenty of retailers using it.

Not to match to membership records for the purpose of revoking an account and losing a customer over not showing a receipt at the door.

They could. Apparently you know someone at this company who says they aren't, but it's not a far-fetched notion in the abstract these days.

That's fine. I agree with everything you said in this post. Which isn't what I questioned. You say, in the quote above, that they CAN'T compel you to show a receipt.

They absolutely can. They choose not to. Yes, because we are overlitigious.

If you just mean what they WILL or will LIKELY do, that's different than CAN or CAN'T do.
