Country Music: I don't get it (1 Viewer)

I gravitate to the Southern Rock too. Skynard, Molly Hatchet, CCR, 38 Special, Marshall Tucker Band, Steely Dan.
one of these things is (seriously) not like the others.
None of those things are like the others. And Skynard.
Steely Dan sticks out like a sore thumb in a southern rock / country music discussion.
38 Special is real bad, too.

Nice attempt. I gave some, um, credence late night to it, but now I'm fully done with this attempt.

Hank. Start with Hank if you're at all sincere.
38 Special is not real bad. And don't start with Hank. You'll dislike country even more.

Many years ago, my wife got a job at Cox Radio and they had 5 stations in town. I'm like "heck yeah!" cause one of them was the classic rock station I listen to all the time.

So a few months in, she tells me that the Country station is actually the most popular and the most profitable of the 5. Much like the OP, I was completely Shuked by this news. "How can people listen to that crap?"

Fast forward a few months and she gets two free tickets to a country concert that I have zero interest in, but it's free and she wants to go, so I figure WTH.

HOLY CRAP. I was ill prepared for the vocal power and range of one Martina McBride. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q3LyECse3g

Like some have said here, there are extremely talented musicians in every genre of music if you dig around a bit. Country is no exception.

Country does indeed have a lot of talented musicians. Another thing I enjoy about a lot of country music - where I typically prefer female singers to male ones - is that there is a lot of interesting instrumentation, in contrast to today's pop/rock/hip-hop minimalism (which has actually reversed itself in recent years, but still). You can listen to many country songs from the last two decades or more and hear really slickly produced, verrrrrry talented studio musicians playing multiple guitar parts, several keyboard parts, an interesting bassline, and some very skilled drumming. It's interesting. Add in that country has a lot of good vocal harmonies and it makes for a terrific listen much of the time.

For anyone curious what I'm talking about as far as the heavily produced, skilled studio instrumental parts, this song ("Bye Bye") by Jo Dee Messina isn't recent (it's about 15 years old), but it's a good example of what I mean and it sounds as though it could have been recorded last week. I broke it down one time and counted five or maybe six guitar parts, a Hammond, a piano, another keyboard doing stacked chords with a string sound of some kind, plus nice bass/drum parts. It also happens to be a nifty piece of songwriting. Another example that more people might know from around the same era: I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack. Some awesome keyboard and bass (both synth and actual bass guitar) work and what I think is three heavily processed guitars. This sort of thing really gets my attention and seems to be more often found in country music than pop/rock from about 1995 to today.

Bluegrass with fast banjos I do like. I guess it's mostly the pace that doesn't work for me on most country songs.
Pretty much this. I like old Allison Krauss and The Union Station stuff a lot. Some newer stuff like Nickel Creek and I guess Trampled by Turtles (they're vastly different) I also dig. Since americana and Drive-By Truckers has been memtioned, "The King Is Dead" by The Decemberists could also be lumped in here I think.

I think op is talking about mainstream country, like Luke Bryan, Eric Church, etc. If you are forced to listen to it for a long period of time, it is not that bad. Pretty similar to mainstream pop music. Like Aerial Assault points out, the musicians are all very talented. I once was forced to go to a Kenny Chesney stadium extravaganza. The whole show, including the 4 opening acts were all really good and it ended up being super fun.

There is plenty of talent in country music no doubt. I just find what they tend to play on the radio essentially pop. Now there is plenty of good pop. But country shouldn't be pop IMO.

Yeah. Country is a pretty broad genre. I love the outlaw stuff, classic stuff, bluegrass, alt country, red dirt and Americana. But most of the Nashville radio stuff is horrifying.

Old school country as others have mentioned is probably some of the best. Some more recent stuff that's pretty good

Randy Rogers Band

Uncle Tupelo

Zac Brown

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRXJ4lbCyQQ - Randy Rogers song that I think is pretty good and indicative of their sound.

I will echo what everyone else is saying - radio country music is a steaming pile like most radio music.

Didn't Uncle Tupelo break up 20 years ago?

I do like that Randy Rogers song a lot even though I've hated most of their more recent work.
