Crediting a Safety question? (1 Viewer)

Obviously a player gets credited with a safety when he tackles a ball carrying player in the endzone but in Week 5 Kenny Onatolu got credited with a safety when Seattle Punter Jon Ryan ran out of the back of the endzone because he was the closest player to the Ryan.

My question is in the Bears/Titans game does Kam Wimbley get credit for safety because he is the player that forced the penalty (illegal hands to the face) which caused the safety to happen?

I am not Jene and I do not play a doctor on TV, but I would think it may be left up to the score keeper. In some cases I see a guy chase a player out of bounds and nobody gets credit for a tackle since the player ran out on his out, but other home places give credit for a tackle. I guess it depends also on whether or not the NFL stats people get involved.

That is the bigger issue. Stat keeping for defense is terribly inconsistent. Another example is when a QB slides to end a play & give himself up and a defender touches him down. Some stadiums credit the solo tackle while others will not credit a tackle due to the QB voluntarily giving himself up. I also saw earlier this season a PD credited to both Carlos Rogers and Patrick Willis on the same play and was listed as (Rogers, Willis) as if it were a tackle.

I can understand giving credit to two players for a pass defensed if both are involved in the break up, perhaps in different manners. That is, maybe Willis hits the intended receiver while Rogers knocks the ball away. It could also happen if a DL tips the ball at the line but the ball still reaches the intended receiver and is broken up by another defensive player. As for the OP's question, I don't think he'll get credit for the safety even though he probably should. Just like with PI, players don't get credit for production that comes via penalty, even though they are directly responsible for said penalty, and in turn said production. It kind of sucks, but that's the way it is.

I agree with your thought process on crediting both players on the PD but I had never seen it before and I have been following play by plays live with the games since the 2001 season.
