Cubs installing 70 foot digital scoreboard (1 Viewer)

Their old scoreboard is a classic. I hate to see it go. I can't believe this will be a popular move.
It isn't replacing the old scoreboard. It is going to display information to complement it. I don't have a problem with it at all and I think at worst it will be a 50/50 reaction here.

After one game people will forget all about the old scoreboard. The fans at the game will love the new one.

Sounds like the city is trying to prevent it based on Wrigley's landmark status. Ricketts will have to battle every step of the way to do anything to pull Wrigley into this century (and of course, create new revenue streams).

A damn shame. Protect that jewel cubbies. I never heard one serious fan ask for anything like this
I'm a serious fan, and while I never asked for this, I like it. Those black-and-white bank temperature signs they have for player stats look like ####.
Take it from this Yankee fan, who has the french whorehouse of ballparks with video and bells and whistles and all that stuff. Its not bad, but I can't tell you how blown away I was by the simple charms of Wrigley. It is an amazing experience. I would sooner put a small flatscreen monitor on the back of each seat(don't know what it would cost but these are the cubs) than to interupt the stunning visual flow of that park. It is a treasure. I won't go as far to say that Fenway has been ruined, but much of the charm has been bled chasing a buck there for very little reward. It's not my rodeo, and who am I to say anyone has ENOUGH money, but these are the cubs. Money doesn't seem like their problem, its how they SPENT their money which is the problem.

I think there's room to update Wrigley without turning it into a whorehouse. I think this sign is pretty unobtrusive where it is, tucked between the basket and the right field stands. If they were talking about flanking the old scoreboard with Jerry Jones-style jumbotrons, I'd be against it. Really, when I saw the headline, I thought I was going to hate this, but I think it's the kind of update that will work.

I agree completely. If they were becoming like the Cell where I have a hard time concentrating on the game with everything going on, I would be furious. However, the proposed board will solve one of the only real issues I have with Wrigley. The info that will be available on the screen is a pain to find from numerous seating locations in the currently. The ad space is an easy tradeoff for me. The beauty of Wrigley is that your focus is on the game itself more so than any baseball park I have attended. There is almost nothing else to concentrate on. As long as they don't touch that, I will be fine. The screen as it appears it will function will not change that. And like I said before, Ricketts is in a horrible position in trying to gather the money to fund a baseball organization while updating a park that badly needs it. With the Toyota sign, this screen, and whatever they are doing in the McDonald's parking lot, I am okay with the avenues they are using to create revenue streams so far. They could at some point go to far but it hasn't happened yet.I have faith in Ricketts that every cent they make will create a better product.

I can't believe nobody else has a problem w/ this. The money thing seems ridiculous. They are the cubs.
No doubt they have the money to fund their organization. What they don't have is the funds to update a ballpark that badly needs better facilities for the players in particular among other ares of concern as well. The Cubs have no leverage to get public funding like previous Chicago teams who threatened moves. If as it appears they will not receive public funds any time soon, they have to find other avenues of revenue. The problem is that the neighborhood and Wrigley's landmark status prevents almost every avenue possible to do so. That is why Ricketts had to jump at the chance to buy the McDonald's lot even though it comes with the McDonalds.

Course not.Bet you've heard a serious fan ask his team to sign an expensive free agent, though. Last I checked, teams like to pay for those with new revenue.
#smallmarketcubbies ?
Just sayin'. If it was up to the fans there wouldn't be a single park with corporate sponsorships and they'd all be free of ads and would sell $3 beers and the owners would fund the payroll through their own personal assets. But that's not how it works.

I hear ya. As I said, not my team, not my park, and I'm just a baseball fan. But being there was among the, if not the, best baseball experiences I've ever had. As mentioned above, your focus is singlarly on the game. Less may be more with advertising. If you busy it up, well, its diminishing returns. You can't undo this once it happens is all I'm saying. They'll never get RID of this scoreboard. You don't fit this genie back in the bottle.

It is a fine line I hope they don't cross. Right now I am glad I can catch the pitch speed from any seat in the stadium. I just hope I am not wrong about it not being an during play distraction.
