Current "5-Tool Players" in MLB (1 Viewer)

Reyes is supposed to but his power is down a bit this year.

I'd lump ARod in there.

Rollins

Beltran

Sizemore

Soriano misses out b/c of the avg

Crawford for sure

Russell Martin - this guy is good

Wright

Wells

That's prolly it.

I really think Brandon Phillips is on the verge.

Maybe Alex Rios

Maybe Byrnes, but he's a long shot.

Want to help me out with who led the league in OF assists last year?
I mean, clearly that's a function of people running on him all the time. For example, Soriano had 22 assists and ICHIRO! only had 8. Does that mean Soriano has a better arm than ICHIRO! Obviously not.Having said that, Soriano's range factor, zone rating and other defensive stats were all above average last year. He definitely had a better year in LF than I thought.

Bonds has had all 5 tools...at one time or another...just never at the same time.

To add to his validity, he is ONE BIG TOOL right now - does that count? (p.s. his brother seems quite a jerk too).

Griff was/maybe if he can get healthy, as well.

It's the gold standard, the accepted yardstick used to rate baseball players. But what exactly is a five-tool player?

If you know, quick, raise your hand. Anybody? Anybody? For such a common baseball term, its meaning remains a mystery to many. Others know the five tools, but don't know how teams and scouts gauge them as talents.

For the record, the five tools are 1) hitting for average, 2) hitting for power, 3) running speed, 4) arm strength and 5) fielding ability.
I don't remember Griffey being really fast, nor a particularly extraordinary baserunner... but I could be wrong.

He was faster than average and a very good baserunner earlier in his career. Now he's a catcher on the basepaths.

Where have you gone, Raul Mondesi.

(Though granted, his average was never stellar.)
:bye: He could and should have been so good, but his work ethic sucked. He liked to party too much.

Is he the first six tool player? Is that like being the 5th Beatle?

How about one of the most underrated players in baseball -- Carlos Guillen.

His D is a little shaky, though.

Chase Utley is pretty close.
i nearly died when i read this. his defense is barely passable.
I would not agree with that at all. He has improved a lot. Is he the best fielder, no, but I would call him good now.
:lmao: He must still be reading the scouting reports from 5 years ago.
 Utley is a much improved fielder and no longer a liability. Not only that, he's actually pretty good.

No, not recently. With the Mariner's (if you drop the year he only played 70 something games), he averaged just over 16 stolen bases a year. Certainly not Ricky Henderson numbers, but decent. Griffey had 24 in his best year, Andruw Jones 27 and DLee 21, so I'd say he's in the conversation. JMHO.

Hunter Pence, watch this guy explode
 His swing looks funny, but he's hit for power and average at all levels, including his short stint in the Bigs so far. He'll never steal 40 bases, but 25 is very realistic. Plays very good defense and has an above average arm. Someone said Rios is a maybe? Maybe? He is a definite. Hit over .300 last year. Will probably be 25x20 this year with 30x30 potential...has a great arm and very good range.
