QUARTERBACK

Cutler gets the nod

Posted by denverpost.com @ 3:29 pm

You asked for it. You got it.

Denver Post staff writer Mike Klis reported today that Broncos coach Mike Shanahan entered the weekend planning to start rookie Jay Cutler and replace Jake Plummer as the team’s starting quarterback for its next game, Dec. 3 vs. Seattle at Invesco Field at Mile High.

Citing “sources close to the situation,” Klis reported: “The plan is to make the change permanent. Plummer is expected to finish out the season as a No. 2 quarterback for the first time in his 10-year NFL career.”

Does this help or hurt Walker??
Seems every new QB has a new favorite target, but based on what I've seen of Cutler's arm (both strength and accuracy), plus considering Denver really has no other legitimate threats at WR or TE (with the possible execption of Rod Smith), and taking into account Walker's speed, I think Walker has even more potential to hit some really big plays now.Smith has always had good hands, and it wouldn't surprise me if he also had an increase in production as Cutler's safety outlet (not that there is anywhere for Smith to go BUT up).

As a true blue Broncos fan and see how many balls Javon could have caught, this has to help him IF and a big IF Cutler's accuracy is as advertised. I don't doubt Cutler's accuracy, arm strength, mobility, etc., where I think he may be lacking is QB smarts. But that is something Shanny will drive into him. Whether or not that is by this year, who knows. But you should expect at least one extra 20+ yard reception to hit Walker.I think the guy who benefits the most out of this is Rod Smith. He still runs those short routes pretty good and Cutler will need those.

2 broncos fans on at the same time that pretty much say the same thing, well put Elway Lives.....

i just aquired WALKER earlier in the week because i figured culter would be in next week. i think this REALLY helps walker. cutler has a cannon for an arm and they will hook up on the deep balls that Plummer couldnt. i also think Shanny will be more willing to let cutler throw deep. i dont think he trusted jake.

Do you really think Shanny will trust his rookie QB immediately? While I hope so, I don't see it this year. At least unless it's needed. Walker has a way of making long plays out of short plays, so I don't think his production will slip too much, but I just don't see Shanny running a wide open offense in Cutler's first few games.

I am curious who the #3 and #4 receivers are on that roster.

IMO Those are the recievers that are going to benifit most from the change as they will be the players that JC has practiced with and should have the best chemistry with. (see E Wilford, see P Crayton, etc).

I would think that J Walk will still see his touches, but as far as who benifits most - IMO #3 and #4.

Here's hoping Brandon Marhsall gets some looks. Are we sure this is true? I was told by SSOG that there was no way this could happen :P

I think the guy to keep an eye on is David Kircus - he looked good in pre-season w/ Cutler, and caught several deep passes, and has done alright thus far in the regular season, considering he is a #4 or #4 target.

You are getting way ahead of yourselves. Based on previous experience with rookie starting QB's, it's a 50-50 chance whether Cutler does any better than Plummer. He might have a good first game, but as soon as defensive coordinators get a chance to see him in action, they will plan for him.

When Leinart got his first start, he went for 253 yards two td's and one int. Since then, in 6 games he's averaged 174 yards and thrown 4 td's, with 5 int's. (He has a couple of rushing td's). So it is entirely possible that no one will benefit from Cutler becoming the starting QB. Playing qb in the NFL is one of the most difficult jobs in sport. It may be that Cutler is a rare exception, but I wouldn't count on it.

Exactly. Walker is a Top 5 receiver in all of my leagues. I really don't see how throwing a rookie QB in at the end of the season is going to help Walker. As a Top 5 WR, he is putting up pretty solid numbers week in and week out. Is a guy who never started before going to be able to propel him from WR 2 or 3 to #1?!?!I own him in one league and would sell if I could...

True. Definately a very high risk, high reward situation here.

How is this different from what Adam said and the original thread?

I can't see how the switch doesn't help the entire Denver offense, especially their gamebreakers, Javon Walker and Tatum Bell.

First, it's been obvious for weeks that Shanny didn't trust Plummer. His Plummer gameplans were curtailed as if Jake were a rookie. Or worse, actually. The change in playcalling alone will shake things up for the positive.

If Cutler (unlike Plummer) can actually hit a receiver in stride, Walker will cash in big time. He's far and away their best receiver and has the jets to take any play the distance. Shanahan will, no doubt, seek to get him isolated in coverage as often as possible. And if that, in turn, pulls the strong safety out of the box, the Bell's should have more running room than they've seen all year.

Finally, Denver's schedule the rest of the way has potential shootouts littered throughout: Seattle, @San Diego, @Arzizona, Cincinnati, San Francisco. Potential upticks in this area, too.

This is a move that should have been made a few weeks ago. But one that's better late than never.

Didn't Cutler and Scheffler hook up a lot in pre-season? Of course, for that chemistry to be rekindled, Scheffler may need to be active for the games.

Cutler was fond of Scheff and Kircus in preseason.

This team has several other issues asides from QB. I wonder if Shanny's doing this to start a fire under the team.

All aspects have been suspect lately, special teams, run game, run D whatever...

Playoffs-wise, good luck starting a rook QB against a BB or Dungy coached D.

And you thought Denver was actually going -anywhere- in the playoffs with Plummer at quarterback??

They've been done as dinner (as a Super Bowl candidate) for weeks, so it's beyond high time to get the kid's feet wet and get ready for 2007. And if they're lucky, maybe they make the playoffs and win a game. Certainly no better or worse that Plummer would have done.
