Broncos' Cutler calls out Marshall for suffering gash on right forearm

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Jay Cutler has had it with all the drama and headlines surrounding top target Brandon Marshall.

Brandon Marshall

In his first offseason interview, one sprinkled with unusually blunt criticism, the Denver Broncos quarterback called out his No. 1 receiver and fellow third-year star who suffered a gash on his right forearm while horsing around last month.

"Yeah, he's not my favorite person right now," Cutler said. "I mean, I support him, but it's always something with him right now."

With Jeremy Bates taking over the Broncos' passing game, Cutler said Tuesday that it was imperative for Marshall to participate in all the offseason workouts, but he won't be back in action until training camp.

"We're going to be fine. I'm not that overly concerned about it, but it just would be nice coming into our third year, coming off a big year he had last year, for him to get more work done and get more time in and just a little more trust out there," Cutler said. "But it's going to take some time now, maybe training camp, maybe even longer."

Marshall, who emerged as Cutler's primary target during a breakout 2007 season, said he was horsing around with his older brother at a resort in Orlando, Fla., when he fell into a television set, cutting an artery, a vein, a nerve, two tendons and three muscles in his right arm.

Marshall has found himself in the news a lot lately. He faces a DUI charge stemming from an October incident and had a spat with his girlfriend last year that landed him in court. And he was partying with Darrent Williams the night the cornerback was slain in a drive-by shooting on Jan. 1, 2006. Former teammate Javon Walker said Marshall sprayed champagne on some bar patrons, sparking a confrontation that preceded the shooting, which remains unsolved.

"I've talked to him many times. I think a lot of people have. ... He knows he's running out of chances," Cutler said. "This wasn't like his DUI and other stuff he's had. It was an accident, but still, things like that can't happen. He knows it.

"But like I told him, I said, 'Brandon, they're going to quit giving you chances and you're going to have to go somewhere else. And that's going to be a shame.'"

Marshall said last week that he realizes he has to grow up and that his freak injury was a wakeup call.

"His DUI was a wakeup call," Cutler retorted. "He's had many wakeup calls. I mean, he's been in [coach Mike] Shanahan's office many times. I've been up there with him. He said the same thing: 'This is a wakeup call. This is the last thing that's going to happen. Blah blah blah.' I mean, until he goes out and proves it, we'll see what happens.'"

Cutler wants to have trust in his No. 1 receiver.

"I love Brandon to death and he's a great kid at heart. I don't think he goes out there looking for trouble. He's not at bars late. He's not doing those things that other people do. It's just something about him. He's always into something," Cutler said. "Like I told him, 'I haven't lost faith in you. I'll still support you. But ... you're going to have to prove yourself this time.'"

Marshall, a fourth-round draft choice in 2006 out of Central Florida, blossomed into the Broncos' best receiver last year, facilitating the recent release of Walker, who was replaced by free agent Keary Colbert.

Cutler isn't losing any sleep over the departure of the oft-injured and often cranky Walker, who signed t with the rival Oakland Raiders.

"Javon's a great receiver, but Javon he likes the spotlight and he likes the ball coming to him a lot," Cutler said. "With Brandon and him out there it would be tough. You've got to have a No. 1 guy you want to go to. I think Brandon was going to be my guy. I don't know if Javon was going to be OK with 40, 50, 60 balls."

The free agent departure Cutler is fretting over is the loss of 15-year veteran kicker Jason Elam, who had four game-winning field goals last season and who signed with Atlanta for $3.3 million guaranteed money in 2008, nearly $1 million more than the cost-conscious Broncos were offering.

"I have a little worry about that," Cutler said. "I mean, one of the best clutch kickers in the game. Been here for that long. I was surprised to see we let him go."

Another concern for Cutler is left tackle, where Chris Kuper will get first crack at replacing the retired Matt Lepsis, who protected Cutler's blind side.

"It's a big position for me," Cutler said.

Cutler should keep his thoughts on other teammates to himself, unless he just praising the hell out of them. He should focus a little more on getting better than his sporadic and sometimes sorry butt performances last year. Go a long way to making the Bronco's a better team than running his mouth to the press. Marshall may or may not be an idiot, but Cutlers coming off like a smug suck up.

At least he is honest. Marshall does need to stop throwing his life down the toilet. The whole situation kind of makes me wish I had not traded 85 in part b/c I didn't 'need' him anymore, due to the development of Marshall.

And if anyone believes this tripped and fell story they probably believed Brain Griese tripped over his dog. Of course I would believe them if they put alcohol into the equation.

Good for him. Kid is looking like a true leader
I always thought Cutler is a lot like Favre. :thumbup:He didn't completely throw him under the bus.

if you think thats throwing under the bus you really need to see the things Michael Jordan said about his teammates....he KILLED Scottie Pippen for missing a big game with what he said was a migraine

He sounds EXACTLY like Favre. As a former Green Bay resident, I can recall Favre calling out Sharpe, Freeman, and Walker, just to name a few WR's. He let his team know what his standards of performance were, both on and off the field in exactly the same manner as Cutler did with Marshall.I imagine Shanahan was delighted to see that leadership from his QB.

Loving this kid more and more each day :lmao:

Everyone out there is thinking the same thing about Marshall, the team leader just spoke up about it.

I like that Cutler said something. This string of events has to scare the heck out of you if you are expecting a long career with the guy:

It is time for Marshall to shut himself into his condo, do push-ups, play X-box, study tape, and avoid partying and the people who party. If you are frustrated with not doing anything, just remember what you are getting paid to play a friggin' game.

I think now we know why the Next TO, aka EEEEE, was a 4th rounder. Way too much risk with a guy like this. He could change everything and have a great career. But to this point he has justified the selection with his boneheadedness.

Wow. People need to lighten up a little bit. It's not like the kids is shooting people or shooting up. He was horsing around with his brother and got hurt. The DUI? It's not good but since people brought up Favre he had issues with drug dependency himself and has been known to drink.

re: the bolded statement:Yeah, and I eat lunch every week with the Pope.

If you think that's all was going on, you have a little too much trust in everything you read. But, let's assume that was the case. Imagine you own the Broncos and your #1 WR who has had numerous little incidents such as DUI's and being around while other teammates died goes and gets hurt "horsing around" and may impact his play. You pay the guy millions of $$ to train, be healthy, stay out of trouble, and perform. Are you happy right now? Would you think you needed to "lighten up"? Seriously.

If that doesn't make sense to you, think of Big Ben. Why where was there an uproar about riding a motorcycle without a helmet or riding one period? Answer: Riding motorcycles is fine for most every citizen in this country that doesn't have millions invested in them to perform and stay healthy. That's why they have clauses in their contracts prohibiting from partaking in those activities. What Marshall did falls under that category. He has to realize he can't be doing what other people his age are doing, even if it seems harmless and innocent. He can rough play and ride motorcycles and do whatever he wants when he's 35 and out of the league. For now, no.

I don't buy his injury story since there were two stories. The truth does not have two versions. It also does not pass the smell test. This kid was partying with his posse. They were playing whatever the hell the latest video craze was. His partied up intoxicated ### lost, he got frustrated, and he gave the T.V. a fore arem shiv in frustration. That passes the smell test.

I'd even go for "he and his brother got into a fight over a game and broke the TV".

We would never know; in Green Bay and Mississippi he could get tanked on a bottle of JD and ride naked with strippers in a convertable and not get pulled over. It's not the same thing.Chances Brett has driven while over the limit? 99%.

I own Marshall in a keeper and love his talent but don't like the fact that his QB and apparently the team are getting tired of his act. I don't think this one particular incident is particularly alarming but it's more of a body of evidence and a lot of little things that appear to be an issue with his QB and coach. Hopefully, he can screw on his head straight because the kid really does have phenomenal talent and could be a great wr.

The point is that, every few months, it is something else with Marshall. He has "problem" written all over him. I have no problem whatsoever with what Cutler said.

I've never really gotten the Marshall hype here. And that's with total respect toward Bloom, who I think started it. I just don't see what he does...

you should watch him play...
Agreed. I have to admit that most of my exposure was that fabulous preseason he had two years ago and a few isolated plays last year, but the talent is clearly there.

I watched nearly every catch he had last year and he turns in a highlight film run after the catch nearly every game. He had 102 catches as a 2nd year wr and they will continue to get the ball into his hands any way they can each and every game. He finished 9th in scoring and 6th in receiving yards but what held him back from being top 5 was the td's (only had 7). The Bronc's had bigtime redzone problems last year and that should be an area that they improve upon this year. Marshall had 2 td's in his first 9 games last year and 5 in the final 7 games so maybe a light switched on, they used him more as a redzone target, law of averages, but he should improve upon his TD total from last year.Outside of attitude there is nothing not to like about his talent or opportunity.

Now imagine you are his employer. This guy is one of the major "faces" of your company.Do you think investors/customers would come flocking to your product? Or the opposite? He is a representative of his company in or out of uniform, regardless of age/religion/race/etc.

:banned: No honest cops in those 2 states, nice generalization.

Your jumping to conclusions is ridiculous. Marshall got caught and that's all that matters, we can't speculate that Tom Brady or Peyton Manning has date-raped women, now can we? We can't assume since Travis Henry got it on with a 15 year old that he likes pre-teen boys now can we? It's ridiculous for you to jump to these conclusions, I've heard of guilty til proven innocent, but how about at least having a charge? GEEZE. :yucky:

99% of FF'ers either won't even know about this or will forget it by the time the season starts. The offseason geeks on this board are the exception of course.

highly doubt he'll have a long career due to his moronic-ness, but as far as re-draft leagues go i don't think it's much of a concern. In a dynasty i definitely think he needs to be dropped a few notches.

He has a little Chris Henry in him, but not near to that degree. The TO comparisons are off since while TO has attitude he never is in legal trouble whereas Marshall got his teammate killed by acting up at a bar.

Why would this boost Cutler's stock, but not Marshall's?

The TEs are probably very good, but relatively unproven over time. While I like the Colbert acquisition, he's not proven to be a great #2. Stokley's a badass, but 'just' a #3. The passing game success is Cutler-Marshall.

Wasnt there supposedly ligament damage with that cut? Cant be good for the stock of a WR who you know... makes his living with his hands...

If Philip Rivers had publicly criticized someone on his team during the off-season this thread would be at least ten pages long.

But the criticism is warranted here. Everything he stated is true, and Marshall knows it.I applaud Cutler for his comments. There was no throwing him under the bus here.

Here ya go. The only thing that can stop him is his short-circuited brain.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dwOoIoJYUA...feature=related
Marshall is a fantastic player. His ability after the catch is amazing...he is a lot like Boldin in the fact that he breaks tackles and looks for contact. He also has great hands and adjustment ability. My question with Marshall involved how they were going to use both him and Walker, but now that Walker is gone...
