***Dan Lambskins Top 100 Favorite Vocalists*** 1 - Maynard James Keenan (2 Viewers)

12 - David Gilmour - Pink Floyd

while I’m sure I knew their hits, Floyd didn’t become one of my favorite bands until I went through a do a lot of acid and listen to Floyd phase in high school. They’re still up there for me, I’d probably put them #2 if I was ranking bands, although I don’t listen to them quite as often these days

I’ll admit I’m not the best on who’s doing the vocals on some of the tracks, so I believe the list is accurate but certainly prone to errors

It’s also a bit hard to separate why I love a certain Floyd song (vocals, guitar, bass, whatever) but attempting to do my best

Breathe

Long you live and high you fly
And smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry
And all you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be

(might be one of my all time favorite lyrics)

Wish You Were Here

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from hell?
Blue skies from pain?
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange
A walk-on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fishbowl
Year after year
Running over the same old ground
What have we found?
The same old fears
Wish you were here

High Hopes

The grass was greener
The light was brighter
With friends surrounded
The nights of wonder

Echoes

Learning to Fly

Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought, I thought of everything
No navigator to find my way home
Unladen empty and turned to stone
A soul in tension that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try

While Money is a great song I really don’t need to hear it again and it’s usually a skip for me if it comes on

There’s a few combo songs that he shares vocals with another guy… I’ll save for further in the countdown
These are indeed all Gilmour vocals, though Echoes and Breathe are actually shared between him and Rick Wright.

Fun fact: Gilmour won his legal battle with the other guy that allowed his version of Pink Floyd to continue in part because he was lead singer on many of their most famous songs and thus the courts considered him just as much the identity of the band as the guy who wrote most of the songs.

10 - Chris Cornell - Soundgarden / Audioslave

Chris might have had the best voice in rock.

I was never a huge Soundgarden fan, don’t get me wrong, I liked them just fine, just preferred other bands more. Absolutely loved that debut Audioslave album though and that’s what really made me appreciate him as a vocalist. Im not that familiar with his Temple of the Dog or Mad Season stuff (other than Hunger Strike ). Same with his solo stuff, outside of a few covers

Not sure why but his death hit me pretty hard. Maybe because it was a Detroit show and I remember hearing about it on morning radio so it just hit closer to home? Or just a reminder that you never really know how people might be feeling

Anyway, enough being a downer, let’s celebrate some of his work

Soundgarden

Spoonman is probably the first song I can remember hearing, either on radio or MTV and then of course that crazy Black Hole Sun video (still love that song)

The Day I Tried To Live I think this one really features his high range
Pretty Noose too

I caught the moon today
Pick it up
And throw it away all right
I got the perfect steal
A cleaner love
With a dirty feel all right
Fallout and take the bait
Eat the fruit
And kiss the snake goodnight
Common ruse, dirty face
Pretty noose is pretty hate
And I don't like what you got me hanging from
And I don't like what you got me hanging from
And I don't like what you got me hanging from

Blow Up The Outside World is a good one too

Audioslave

Cochise is a great album opener, really sets the tone

Really like how he belts out those final songs in Show Me How to Live

Nail in my hand
From my creator
You gave me life
Now show me how to live
Nail in my hand
From my creator
You gave me life
Now show me how to live
Show me how to live
Show me how to live
Show me how to live
Show me how to live

not sure if I can pick a favorite between I Am The Highway or Like a Stone but if I had to pick one song by him it would be one of those 2

In your house, I long to be
Room by room, patiently
I'll wait for you there
Like a stone
I'll wait for you there
Alone

As far as his solo stuff the one that really comes to mind is his cover of Nothing Compares 2 U…just haunting

If you gave me a magic ticket to see any artist perform again, he’d be on a short list

That’s it for today
Mad Season wasn't him, that was Layne Staley.

Cornell was the best hard rock vocalist since Robert Plant. His voice could go where few others could. It did diminish over time, though. When I saw a Soundgarden reunion show in 2011, his voice couldn't do some of the things it did in the '90s.

Ah ok he filled in for a reunion show, that’s why it popped up as associated acts (I did not properly vet it)

17 - Prince

I’m not like world’s number one Prince fan or anything, but I do like his stuff and I would consider him one of the all time great musicians

Going to focus on a few of my favorites rather than just list all the hits

7 - this song got me to buy that goofy symbol album which I think is actually a pretty decent album overall

Darling Nikki

She said, "Sign your name on the dotted line"
The lights went out and Nikki started to grind

***** Control

Ill uh, just skip the lyrics for that one

Gett Off (sic)

So here we, so here we
So here we are, here we are in my paisley crib
Whatcha want to eat? (Ribs!)
Naw toy, I don't serve ribs
You better be happy that dress is still on
I heard the rip when you sat down
Honey, them hips is gone
But that's alright, I clock 'em that way
Remind me of somethin' James used to say
"I like 'em fat, I like 'em proud
U got to have a mother for me
Now move your big *** 'round this way
So I can work on that zipper, baby"
Tonight you're a star and I'm the Big Dipper
Na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na

My favorite it is probably 1999

Wish he could have stuck around longer, sounds like he had plenty of more music to put out
Prince crushing While My Guitar Gently Weeps is one of my favorite things.

Somewhere after schnitzel with noodles and girls in white dresses, but definitely before whiskers on kittens and warm woolen mittens.

I could literally watch this every day. And have gone through periods where I have. The creative juice of all of these musicians, with George Harrison’s son backing them up to add to the connective tissue for this song that is so emotional in the first place with its power, it’s soaring melodies, the contrast of the bridge that Steve winwood brings in to help us not get too overwhelmed by the force. And prince coyly standing in the background for 2/3, then stepping up for the solo as Harrison gives him a knowing smile. And prince is just so in the pocket with it and you can feel that oozing through the tv, lifting you and ensconcing you in this sonic whirlwind, I mean who ever had more swag than this guy, on a stage with legends and straight up knowing that he can capture everyone’s attention just by being himself and expressing his raw artistic powers. I do wonder what happens to his guitar at the end when he throws it up and hope no one got injured..:but seriously what a tour de force.

💯 though I would highlight some of his other solo stuff, which is what I love the most, including his album songbook, which is mostly (all?) live, including his solo acoustic version of fell on black days, his songs can’t change me and as hope and promise fade, and his cover of thank you by Led Zeppelin

Always identified with his lyrics, style and overall personality and life outlook

There's a remaster on YouTube where you see the guitar land on stage. There's also a cool video about the background behind Prince's appearance, including the fact that he never really rehearsed with them prior to the event and nobody really knew what to expect.

9 - Cat Stevens

So many great songs to choose from to highlight his work. I really enjoy some of the more mellow folk driven songs by Cat, and even though some of the songs aren’t the happiest, throwing on his music always seems to put me in a good mood

The Wind
I listen to the wind
to the wind of my soul
Where I'll end up well I think
only God really knows

Morning Has Broken

Peace Train was one i used to not really care for but has grown on me over the years

The First Cut Is The Deepest is a great breakup / relationship song

I would have given you all of my heart
But there's someone who's torn it apart
And she's taking almost all that I've got
But if you want I'll try to love again
Baby, I'll try to love again but I know
The first cut is the deepest
Baby, I know the first cut is the deepest…

Also pairs well with Wild World

Where Will The Children Play always gets me thinking about urban sprawl

If I had to pick a favorite its probably out of these 3

I’ve got a thing about seeing my grandson grow old

I just can't wait to see that city on the moon
With air conditioned gardens that'll play your favorite tune
I'll see my feet upon that street if it's the last thing that I'll do
Even sweep the roads to be there
But I've got no time for silly chitter chatter
I'm on my way
Cause while my blood's still warm and my mind doesn't matter
I'm hoping to stay
'Cause I've got a thing about seeing my grandson grow old

Can’t Keep It In

Another Saturday Night

Another Saturday night and I ain't got nobody
I've got some money cause I just got paid
Now how I wish I had someone to talk to
I'm in an awful way

8 - Billy Joel

Didn’t really get into Billy until college, prior to that I really only remember Uptown Girl coming on MTV and not caring for it. I did like We Didn’t Start The Fire and had the cassette single, but beyond that it wasn’t until a buddy of mine gave me a mixed CD with some of his favorites that I really dove into his stuff

Goodnight Saigon was the first song on that mix, Billy has such a great way of sucking you in with his lyrics and making you feel like you’re a part of what’s happening (or at least he does for me)

We came in spastic, like tame-less horses
We left in plastic as numbered corpses
And we learned fast to travel light
Our arms were heavy, but our bellies were tight

Laura was another one that I really liked

Here I am
Feeling like a ****ing fool
Do I react the way exactly
She intends me to?
Every time I think I'm off the hook
She makes me lose my cool
I'm her machine
And she can punch all the keys
She can push any button I was programmed through

as far as the hits some of my personal favorites are Big Shot, Still Rock and Roll to Me and of course Piano Man

I did get a chance to catch him live once and he was great. think he might have rescheduled his Detroit stop, wouldn’t mind seeing him one more time but I think tickets were like $250-$300 a pop and im just not interested in paying that

7 - Tom Petty

Tom might just be the greatest American rock and roll singer ever. I’ve got a few guys rated higher but from a pure rock standpoint he’s my pick. also just seemed like a really cool dude

Also one of my wife’s favorite artists, so we’ll have the Petty channel on Sirrius quite often. Unfortunately the only time we seen him live I decided to toke up with some strangers while she went to be bathroom and she was not a fan of that at the time, so we spent half the show arguing

anyway ill feature a mix of hits and favorites here but this is by no means all encompassing

Probably my first memory of Tom is that wacky Alice in Wonderland video on MTV for Don’t Come Around Here No More

You Don’t Know How it Feels

Mary Jane’s Last Dance

Oh, my, my
Oh, hell, yes
Honey, put on that party dress
Buy me a drink, sing me a song
Take me as I come 'cause I can't stay long
Last dance with Mary Jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creeping in
I'm tired of this town again

Crawling Back To You

Good to Be King

It's good to be king and have your own world
It helps to make friends, it's good to meet girls
A sweet little queen who can't run away
It's good to be king, whatever it pays

6 - Elton John

another one I didn’t really appreciate until
I was older, I always just thought of him as some fruity guy that wrote Disney songs, but I was definitely wrong there

Have had a chance to catch him line twice, once with Billy Joel probably 15+ years ago, the other a few years ago on his farewell tour (that that seems to be a perpetual farewell tour)

Not all of his stuff works for me, and I do tend to enjoy his slower stuff more, but I could easily rattle of 25 songs here

Crocodile Rock is such a fun song as is Bennie and the Jets

Someone Saved My Life Tonight always makes me think of Stephen Kings Dark Tower series

Never realized the passing hours of evening showers
Slip noose hanging in my darkest dreams
I'm strangled by your haunted social scene
Just a pawn outplayed by a dominating queen
It's four o'clock in the morning
Damn it listen to me good
I'm sleeping with myself tonight
Saved in time
Thank God my music is still alive
(aah-aah-aah-aah-aah...)
And someone saved my life tonight
Sugar bear
(sugar bear sugar bear...)
You almost had your hooks in me
Didn't you dear
You nearly had me roped and tied
Altar bound hypnotized sweet freedom
Whispered in my ear
You're a butterfly
And butterflies are free to fly
Fly away
High away
Bye bye
(ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh)

Daniel

Daniel my brother you are older than me
Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won't heal?
Your eyes have died but you see more than I
Daniel you're a star in the face of the sky

The One
And all I ever needed was the one
Like freedom fields where wild horses run
When stars collide like you and I
No shadows block the sun
You're all I've ever needed
Ooh babe, you're the one

My favorite (and one of my all time favorite songs) is Your Song. I really didn’t appreciate it until I saw Ewan McGregor sing it in Moulin Rouge.

It's a little bit funny, this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money, but, boy, if I did
I'd buy a big house where we both could live

If I was a sculptor, heh, but then again, no
Or a man who makes potions in a traveling show
I know it's not much, but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song, and this one's for you

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple, but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world

I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well, a few of the verses, well, they've got me quite cross
But the sun's been quite kind while I wrote this song
It's for people like you that keep it turned on

So excuse me forgetting, but these things I do
You see, I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway, the thing is, what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple, but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world

I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world

5 - Ozzy Osbourne - Black Sabbath

I’m still amazed how Ozzy can barely speak an intelligible sentence yet manages to have some of the cleanest vocals in all of metal. Obviously had his demons, but he’s one of the best front men of all time and I just find his lyrics mesmerizing

From the Sabbath side of things War Pigs is great as well as Paranoid . Parents had that album and there was a period in my early teens where I went through and played all their old records (had to sort through a lot of my moms Linda Ronstadt stuff to find the good ones)

N.I.B. probably my favorite Sabbath song of I had to pick, at least lyrically

Your love for me has just got to be real
before you know the way i'm going to feel
i'm going to feel
i'm going to feel
Oh yeah!
now i have you with me, under my power
our love grows stronger now with every hour
look into my eyes, you will see who i am
my name is lucifer, please take my hand

as far as solo stuff Mr. Crowley is one of my favorites

Shot In The Dark

No More Tears is one of his best and got a new appreciation for it after seeing him live a few years ago (had previously seen him along time ago during some of the Ozzfest shows)

Another day passes as the night closes in
The red light goes on to say it's time to begin
I see the man around the corner waiting, can he see me?
I close my eyes and wait to hear the sound of someone screaming here

You see, I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway, the thing is, what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple, but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world

I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world
When he and Joel did their face to face stadium tour in '94, I got to see them at Busch Stadium. On the field, about 15 rows back. A lot of side stories that could be told about this one, but what matters here is that I went in knowing a lot of Billy Joel songs and not knowing how many Elton John songs I knew. Rocket Man, of course. Bennie and the Jets. I think that was all I could have told you. But he made me a fan. Great show.

And then, of course, Tiny Dancer eventually permanently became the song associated with Almost Famous. He didn't play it at the show, but by that time I knew and liked it. And that scene might forever keep it one of my favorites from him.

4 - Axl Rose - Guns N’ Roses

GNR was one of my favorite bands as a kid, even had a cat named Axl. Just loved that sleazy rock vibe in the late 80s / early 90s

Have got to see him live twice, both times well past his prime. Once for the Chinese democracy tour where I think they had Buckethead on guitar (bit of trivia…buckethead has the record for most studio albums released) and then again a few years ago with Slash back in the fold. So yeah he doesn’t sound great these days but their studio albums are some of my all time favorites

Welcome to the Jungle and Paradise City are both classics

Sweet Child O’ Mine is probably my favorite by them, or at least from Appetite

She's got eyes of the bluest skies
As if they thought of rain
I hate to look into those eyes and see an ounce of pain
Her hair reminds me of a warm, safe place
Where as a child I'd hide
And pray for the thunder and the rain to quietly pass me by

Also love Rocket Queen and My Michelle from that album

Your daddy works in porno
Now that mommy's not around
She used to love her heroin
But now she's underground
So you stay out late at night
And you do your dope for free
Drivin' your friends crazy
With your life's insanity

Moving onto Lies, Patience might be the best rock ballad ever written

Shed a tear 'cause I'm missin' you, I'm still alright to smile
Girl, I think about you every day now
Was a time when I wasn't sure, but you set my mind at ease
There is no doubt you're in my heart now

Used to Love Her and You’re Crazy both good too

For the Use Your Illusions I really like Don’t Cry and You Could Be Mine goes hard

Well, you're breakin' down my back and I've been rackin' out my brain
It don't matter how we make it, 'cause it always ends the same
You can push it for more mileage, but your flaps are wearing thin
And I could sleep on it until mornin', but this nightmare never ends
Don't forget to call my lawyers with ridiculous demands
An' you can take the pity so far, but it's more than I can stand
'Cause this couch-trip's gettin' older, tell me how long has it been?
'Cause five years is forever, and you haven't grown up yet

Estranged is great too

I might be one of the few fans that actually likes The Spaghetti Incident? , especially that Black Leather cover

Scratch, scratch, she's clawin' at the door
Oh no, I can't take it anymore
Crack, crack, I'm feelin' so sore
I never should've asked for
Black leather

never could get into Chinese Democracy (to be fair never really gave it a chance) but those first 5 albums are enough to put them in my top 5 artists with Axl as a top on vocals

Pick a song on Appetite.

I think Illusion I was severely underappreciated. II was fine, but it was downhill after Civil War imo.

Dead Horse was always a favorite, especially the Intro. Coma. Dust N Bones. Keep going. Appetite and I =

I wanted so badly to go to the St. Louis show in '91, and I guess for the best that I couldn't make it happen. Still, saying you were at a legendary rock concert turned riot would be a pretty cool story for a 17 year old.

I like many of these listed, but I might have phrased the thread as best frontmen/artists over vocalists alone. For obvious reasons.

3 - James Hetfield - Metallica

this one’s a little tricky because some of my favorite Metallica songs are my favorites for other reasons besides James vocals (like I’d have The Call of Ktulu Top 5 but that’s an instrumental). I also tend to like his more polished stuff over the raw sound of Kill ‘Em All

That said Ride The Lightning might be my favorite album of theirs and that raw sound still comes out, especially on the title track when he’s barking out
Who made you God to say
"I'll take your life from you?"

For Whom The Bell Tolls has some of my favorite lyrics of his

Take a look to the sky just before you die
It's the last time you will
Blackened roar, massive roar fills the crumbling sky
Shattered goal fills his soul with a ruthless cry
Stranger now are his eyes to this mystery
Hears the silence so loud
Crack of dawn, all is gone except the will to be
Now they see what will be, blinded eyes to see

Fade to Black was where he showed he could do a little bit more of a ballad style rock song

Even though Master of Puppets goes pretty hard you can start to hear a little bit more polished tone when they kick things off with Battery

Disposable Heroes

Soldier boy, made of clay
Now an empty shell
Twenty one, only son
But he served us well
Bred to kill, not to care
Do just as we say
Finished here, greetings death
He's yours to take away

Depending on my mood I might put One #1 overall, certainly my favorite from Justice and remember being captivated by that MTV video

Also really like Dyers Eve…everyone goes hard on that one

Dear Mother
Dear Father
What is this hell you have put me through
Believer
Deceiver
Day in day out live my life through you
Pushed onto me what's wrong or right
Hidden from this thing that they call life

…and then everything changed with the Black Album, but without that shift I’m not sure James sustains his career without toning things down a bit. Even at 60+ he still sound great

Vocally I’ll go with The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters as highlights there, although Sad But True is really good too

Load and Reload is an even bigger shift for them into more Rock than Metal

The Outlaw Torn is super underrated in my opinion and Fuel is a nice little banger of a rock song

Beyond that I haven’t really been able to get into their newer stuff, but the tracks they played live from 72 Seasons were pretty good

On that note despite them being one of my favorite bands I’ve only been able to catch them live once (2 nights in Detroit at the end of 2023). They did headline Sonic Temple that I went to a few weeks ago but the stadium was so packed I opted for watching ICP instead (whoop whoop)

Oh I also went to their concert in high school but drank almost an entire 5th of 100 proof SoCo In the parking lot and blacked out during the opener and missed the entire show

I like many of these listed, but I might have phrased the thread as best frontmen/artists over vocalists alone. For obvious reasons.
Fair but it’s favorite not best. If I did best vocalists you’d probably have about 25% of this list at most and favorite bands would probably have about 50% different entries and certainly some in different order

2 - Roger Waters - Pink Floyd

I’ll just preface this by saying I did a lot of LSD in high school which led to watching the Wall movie a ton, as well as listening to the album. Probably my favorite album of all time. I even did a college paper on Floyd about how music had influenced my life

San Tropez is one that I like that doesn’t really sound like anything else he sings

Brain Damage / Eclipse might be my favorite song if I can count it as 1 song

The lunatic is in my head
The lunatic is in my head
You raise the blade, you make the change
You re-arrange me 'til I'm sane

You lock the door and throw away the key
There's someone in my head but it's not me.

SOYCD

All of his work on Animals is great

Getting into The Wall i like the way things kick off with In The Flesh?

So ya thought ya might like to go to the show
To feel the warm thrill of confusion
That space cadet glow

Tell me is something eluding you sunshine?
Is this not what you expected to see?

If you wanna find out what's behind these cold eyes
You'll just have to claw your way through this disguise

really like One of My Turns

Day after day, love turns grey
Like the skin of a dying man
And night after night, we pretend it's all right
But I have grown older and
You have grown colder
And nothing is very much fun any more
And I can feel one of my turns coming on
I feel cold as a razor blade
Tight as a tourniquet
Dry as a funeral drum

Run to the bedroom
In the suitcase on the left
You'll find my favourite axe
Don't look so frightened
This is just a passing phase
One of my bad days
Would you like to watch T.V.?
Or get between the sheets?
Or contemplate the silent freeway?
Would you like something to eat?
Would you like to learn to fly?
Would you?
Would you like to see me try?

Ah, no!

Would you like to call the cops?
Do you think it's time I stopped?
Why are you running away?

Nobody Home

Goodbye Cruel World (told the wife she can play this one at my funeral)

A lot of the hits from that album have shared vocals and I’m too lazy to split it all up, so I’ll just leave it with I love his work on the wall and even a few years ago he probably would have been #1

Also really like When The Tigers Broke Free and Fletcher Memorial Home, especially when he picks up the pitch on these lyrics

It was dark all around
There was frost in the ground
When the tigers broke free
And no one survived
From the Royal Fusiliers Company Z
They were all left behind
Most of them dead
The rest of them dying
And that's how the High Command
Took my daddy from me

Did they expect us to treat them with any respect?

I really wasn’t a Floyd fan when they toured in 94 but did catch Roger doing The Wall some years back. Could tell he had a backing track for some of the stuff like Mother

Will get to #1 shortly, assuming everyone can guess who it is but maybe not

1 - Maynard James Keenan - Tool / A Perfect Circle / Puscifer

Not sure exactly what point Tool surpassed Pink Floyd as my favorite band, but it happened. His work with Tool likely would have been enough to put him at #1, but then add in 2 other bands who are really really good and it’s a no brainer

And yeah Maynard is a weird dude and possibly kind of a ****, but man can he sing. Even at Tools most metal he still delivers clean vocals and can do some great screams, and then you can just get some beautiful melodies in some of his Puscifer work

Going to do my best to pick songs where his vocals are the highlight for me vs the rest of the band

Stating with Tool I’ll go with Opiate from that EP, but all the songs on there are good

Choices always were a problem for you
What you need is someone strong to guide you
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
What you need is someone strong to guide you

For Undertow I’ll go with Prison Sex (maybe I’ll skip the lyrics for that one)

Sober is a classic and remember the crazy video on MTV.

Swamp Song is good too…need to catch this one live (I’m sure I have but not recently)

Why don't you watch where you're wandering?
Why don't you watch where you're stumbling?
You're wading knee deep and going in
You're wading knee deep and going in
This bog is thick and easy to get lost in
'Cause you're a stupid, belligerent ****er
This bog is thick and easy to get lost in
'Cause you're a dumb and belligerent ****er
I hope it sucks you down
Down, down, down

Moving on to Ænima , Ænema is a great song that I think features both his ability to go hard and soft with his vocals

Hooker… is great too, probably one of his hardest songs

My 2 favorite from that album would be Eulogy and H. which might just be my favorite song of his

The snake behind me hisses
What my damage could have been
My blood before me begs me
Open up my heart again
And I feel this coming over like a storm again, now
And I feel this coming over like a storm again, now
Without the skin, here beneath the storm
Under these tears, now
The walls came down
Once the snake is drowned and
As I look in his eyes
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of those times
I could have cried then
I should have cried then
As the walls come down and
As I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of the times
I have died
And will die
It's all right
I don't mind
I don't mind
I don't mind

I think Lateralus the rest of the band shines more, but he still has some great work with the Grudge (that scream at the end)

The Patient is really beautiful

But I'm still right here, giving blood, keeping faith
And I'm still right here
But I'm still right here, giving blood, keeping faith
And I'm still right here

Ticks and Leaches isn’t one of my favorites, but definitely one of his hardest songs and a great FU to their record label

I have mixed feelings on 10,000 days, sometimes I feel like it’s their best work and other times I want to skip half the songs on it

Towards the end of 10,000 Days (Wings, Part 2) when he belts out lyrics below might be his best work on that album

You're the only one who can hold your head up high
Shake your fist at the gates saying
"I have come home now
Fetch me the Spirit, the Son, and the Father
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended
It's time now
My time now
Give me my
Give me my wings"

The Pot was one I didn’t like initially, probably one of the least Tool sounding songs, but I dig it now

Who are you to wave your finger?

I think at one point there were rumors that was a Led Zeppelin dis track but im too lazy to dive that deep into it

Right In Two is my favorite from that album and in contention for my favorite Tool song, but a lot of that is Danny’s drumming. Still like the lyrics though

Angels on the sideline
Baffled and confused
Father blessed them all with reason
And this is what they choose
Monkey killing monkey killing monkey over pieces of the ground
Silly monkeys give them thumbs
They forge a blade, and where there's one they're bound to divide it
Right in two
Right in two

I think the bands work on Fear Inoculum might be their best, but while his vocal work is fine on that album it doesn’t grab me the way a lot of his other stuff does

I’d probably gone with Pneuma as a highlight there

Don’t think I have enough space to get his other work into one post so…

To Be Continued

I will say A Perfect Circle is probably my least favorite of Maynard’s 3 bands, but they’re still damn good

Judith is some of his best work in APC (surprise! it’s another song about his mom)

You're such an inspiration for the ways
That I will never, ever choose to be

Oh, so many ways for me to show you
How your savior has abandoned you

**** your God
Your Lord, your Christ, He did this
Took all you had and left you this way
Still you pray, you never stray, you never
Never taste of the fruit
Never thought to question why

It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you broken down and paralyzed
He did it all for you
He did it all for you

3 Libras is good

So Long and Thanks For All The Fish sounds like a damn pop song but it’s quite catchy

Time is money, money's time
We wasted every second dime
On diets, lawyers, shrinks, and apps, and flags, and plastic surgery
Now Willy Wonka, Major Tom
Ali and Leia have moved on
Signal the final curtain call in all its atomic pageantry

Great cover of Imagine

Counting Bodies Like Sheep To The Rhythm Of The War Drums is one of their harder songs and one of my personal favorites

Moving onto Puscifer this band just continues to grow on me. Initially I think it was part shtick but it’s really evolved to be a great creative outlet for him

definitely softer, although a few songs like The Remedy go harder

You speak like someone who has never been
Smacked in the ****ing mouth
That's okay, we have the remedy
You speak like someone who has never been
Knocked the **** on out
But we have your remedy

Bullet Train To Iowa is a good one

Nice Bohemian Rhapsody cover here

The Humbling River is some of his best work vocally, and probably most accessible to those that don’t like his other stuff

Angel, angel, what have I done?
I've faced the quakes, the wind, the fire
I've conquered country, crown, and throne
Why can't I cross this river?

Grand Canyon is another in that vein

I’m sure there’s countless more songs I could site (like his work on Three Little Pigs) but I’ll close it out

At 61 im not sure how much more new material we’ll get, but im hoping for at least 1 more album from all 3 bands and another Tool tour and I’ll be happy

Thanks for everyone that followed along. Took a lot longer than i initially expected

Im sure if i did it again there would be some turnover

I’d probably find a way to get Dax Riggs from Acid Bath in here, they recently reunited after a 25 year hiatus or whatever and I was really impressed with their live stuff I saw at Sonic Temple. I’ve heard them described as Black Sabbath with Jim Morrison on vocals.

Some of their stuff gets a little heavy but Scream of the Butterfly is pretty accessible

Devin Townsend is another one I saw recently and was super impressed with his range.

You’ve got heavy screaming songs like Love? from his work with Strapping Young Lad or Deadhead from The Devin Townsend Band and then he follows it up with something like Why? or Gratitude showing off his 6 octave range

On and you’ve also got one of the greatest rock operas of all time with Ziltoid the Omniscient about the title characters trip to earth looking for the universes best cup of coffee (hijinks ensue).

Just a really talented guy and with 25ish studio albums under his belt there’s probably something for everyone

I wonder if he had a difficult time writing this about his mother. I mean, I get why he said it, but such a harsh thing to say about someone you love.

BTW, agree with JMK as top dog and would argue he's the best lyricist of his generation too.

I agree that Maynard can sing, but I absolutely loathe how so many Tool albums if not all of them sound like it was recorded with him singing through a megaphone... in another room.

I prefer APC so much to Tool because of this.

It’s also weird that at least with tool he doesn’t even write the lyrics until the music is finished by the other guys

Check out some Puscifer…Existential Reckoning is a great album

So...you don't like any Beatles? Surprised by their omission. Funny about peoples' tastes: I would have Lou Reed and Bob Dylan right near the top of my least favorite vocalists of all time.

What a powerhouse top 17. A few in there I'd rank lower but once you hit Prince, it's pretty much all gold.

As far as Boy Bands go they’re obviously pioneers and paved the way for New Kids On The Block and The Backstreet Boys and whatnot

They’re all fine vocalists and I like a lot of their stuff as well as the solo work but none of them got any strong consideration. Maybe just a little to sterile and plain for me?

Folks ...Dan is the guy that drafted Eric Ebron in the 3rd round of a non-premium TE scoring league

Roger Waters at #2? Dude, are you ok? Did you bonk ur head? 😆
Yeah. Great songwriter, yes. Great singer? Absolutely not. Gilmour is orders of magnitude better — which is why he was designated to sing some of the songs written solely by Waters.
You guys saw the part about me doing a lot of drugs back in the day right?

Also favorite not best
It's all good man. I love Pink Floyd. I wish Waters wasn't such a tool, but I guess that's also kinda what made Floyd, Floyd.

Is there really no Thom Yorke in this list? That seems like a huge failure. Definitely a top 10.

Maynard being #1 is pretty valid though.

This whole Roger Waters take...eh. Glimour is much better.

I mentioned in the whole "no skip" thread, but the Eat the Elephant album with APC is just amazing. The lyrics of Disillusioned are particularly relevant and important. "So long and thanks for all the fish" is so brilliant as well. Glad you mentioned.

He has such an expansive catalogue. Saw him a couple of weeks ago on his "Sessanta" tour after catching Tool the year before. I'm optimistic about more material. More than ever, it seems like he is having fun live.

I think APC is my favorite right now.
