***Dan Lambskins Top 100 Favorite Vocalists*** 20 - Jack White (1 Viewer)

28 - Bob Seger (and the silver bullet band)

I’m sure my Detroit is really showing now, and there’s quite a few of his songs I just don’t care for (or I’m at least sick of them), but man he’s got some bangers too

Old Time Rock and Roll might be overplayed but I’ll still sing along to every damn word of it

Turn the Page
Out there in the spotlight
you're a million miles away
Every ounce of energy
you try to give away
As the sweat pours out your body
like the music that you play
Later in the evening
as you lie awake in bed
With the echoes from the amplifiers
ringin' in your head
You smoke the day's last cigarette,
rememberin' what she said

Fire Down Below
Yeah, it happens out in Vegas happens in Moline
On the blue blood streets of Boston
Up in Berkeley and out in Queens
And it went on yesterday and it's going on tonight
Somewhere there's somebody ain't treatin' somebody right

Still the Same
You always won every time you placed a bet
You're still damn good, no one's gotten to you yet
Every time they were sure they had you caught
You were quicker than they thought
You'd just turn your back and walk
You always said the cards would never do you wrong
The trick, you said, was never play the game too long
A gambler's share, the only risk that you would take
The only loss you could forsake
The only bluff you couldn't fake
And you're still the same
I caught up with you yesterday (still the same, still the same)
Moving game to game
No one standing in your way

Sunspot Baby
She packed up her bags and she took off down the road

You’ll Accomp’ny Me
Beautiful melody in this one

You end up cold and lonely on your own
I'll take my chances babe
I'll risk it all
I'll win your love
Or I'll take the fall
I've made my mind up girl
It's meant to be
Someday lady you'll accomp'ny me
Someday lady you'll accomp'ny me

Back when I used to work in D.C. in the political world, I had a friend named Noah. Noah was whip-smart and knew it. He was also blessed with a coolness and good sense of humor.

So one evening we’re talking about the current political climate and discussing modern meanings of timeless terms like “justice,” and “liberty,” among others, and we’re showing out and citing philosophers and writers and ****. Really obnoxious stuff, only we’re going through in this big group, addressing each other and whatnot until we get to Noah, who, as he sits in his chair and flips through his magazine that’s on the floor, intones, “You know, Todd,” he says, “Freedom is . . . freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left to lose.”

Everybody looked at him and nodded. I just ****ing lost it. Such windbags in attendance tut-tutting, and Noah offers up that collegiately popular song every would-be hippie has heard ad nauseam from Janis Joplin, formerly of Big Brother and the Holding Company. He wasn’t even trying to be an ***—he’d heard the song at UVM probably a million times. But damn if freedom isn’t definitional in the song, so it was just perfect for our exercise in puffery. I don’t know if I’ve ever been around a funnier moment than that one. Rock on, Noah.

Eminem is probably a top five-ten emcee of all-time. But he’s slipping as the years go on. His records aren’t fresh like they were back then, and even his classic LPs don’t hit the same as they used to hit. Plus, we all grow out of the teenage anger, alienation, and angst that was his calling card.

But he pioneered internal and multiple rhyme techniques in hip hop to where everybody sounded like him or imitated his style for at least five years. They still do.

32 - Lou Reed - The Velvet Underground

Lou Reed was something else. His RCA solo/songwriter years are second to none from ‘72-‘78 or so. From Transformer to Street Hassle, Reed was masterful, writing songs about the streets and people of New York unflinchingly and grittily.

And a very distinctive voice, leaden with gin and cigarettes—but a better voice and by far better writer than Tom Waits.

29 - Bon Scott - AC/DC

I probably mentioned elsewhere, but Dirty Deeds was one of the first tapes I ever bought from a little record store by my house

Just love Bons voice, bummer we lost him too soon. I still like the Brian Johnson led band but not nearly as much

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

Big Balls
Some balls are held for charity
And some for fancy dress
But when they're held for pleasure
They're the balls that I like best

Im not sure how well this one is liked, but
The Jack might be my favorite

But how was I to know
That she'd been shuffled before
Said she'd never had a Royal Flush
But I should have known
That all the cards were comin'
From the bottom of the pack
And if I'd known what she was dealin' out
I'd have dealt it back
The Jack is a great song but my all time fav is Long way to the top. The bagpipes were so fresh and original and I still listen to this song every St Patrick's Day.

27 - Waldo - Hatebeak

While we’ve still got some good ones left, we’re reaching the limits of what human vocalists can do. Enter Waldo, an African grey parrot , one of the most renowned vocalists in grindcore

Waldo really shines on Birdseeds of Vengeance

You can see his influence from another prominent vocalist on The Thing That Should Not Beak

His best work is probably on Molt Thrower
They put your brains into a parakeet
(They put your brains into a parakeet)

Sadly I never got a chance to see him perform live…unfortunately I just don’t think you can safely put a bird in front of 500 rabid Hatebeak fans

Funny story…I was pretty baked a few weeks ago and was streaming my music to a Bluetooth speaker outside while I was doing yard work or cooking or something. I kept hearing some sort of screeching sound and couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. Finally my wife said it’s your stupid bird band on the radio

:lmao:

Caninus better be making an appearance!

27 - Michael Jackson

Shamone…you didn’t really think I had a bird at 27 did ya?

Yet another example of a life destroyed by the entertainment industry. He definitely got wacky at the end, and I don’t pretend to know his entire backstory, but im guessing lot of the reason the way he was was due to pressure on him to perform at a young age. Surprised there hasn’t been a good biopic on him, although I’m sure the rights are tied up or something

Anyway, as far as a singer and performer he was the biggest in the world for awhile

Bad

Thriller

Billie Jean
Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who claims that I am the one (oh, baby)
But the kid is not my son (hoo)
She says I am the one (oh, baby)
But the kid is not my son (hee-hee-hee, no-no, hee-hee-hee, hoo)

Smooth Criminal
You've been hit by, you've been struck by, a smooth criminal

26 - Shirley Manson - Garbage

Just love her voice. Love it. Only a couple ladies I have rated higher. Just saw they are doing a tour this year, might get tickets for me and the wife but they don’t hit until September here and I just don’t want to commit that far in advance

Listing a few favorites but i could definitely keep going

Only Happy When It Rains

I Think I’m Paranoid
… Bend me, break me anyway you need me

#1 Crush
See your face every place that I walk in
Hear your voice every time that I'm talking
You will believe in me
And I will never be ignored

Milk
I'm waiting
I'm waiting
I'm waiting for you

Push It
This is the noise that keeps me awake
My head explodes and my body aches

You Look So Fine
I'm not like all the other girls
I won't take it like the other girls
I won't fake it like the other girls
That you used to know

Surprised there hasn’t been a good biopic on him, although I’m sure the rights are tied up or something
I think Lifetime or someone did one but you did say good so....

You could be right but my first thought was that he and his life story may be a bit more controversial than recent musical biodocs (Elton John, Freddy Mercury, Aretha Franklin. Bob Dylan, Elvis) but not an expert on any of them and have only seen Bohemian Rhapsody. I think studios tend to shy away from controversy and I dobt that the Jackson family want MJ (or Joe?) to be portrayed in any kind of negative light.

25 - Mark Sandman - Morphine

I remember seeing Morphine on MTV as a teen and was like oh cool that guy can play 2 Saxophones at once…whatever

Later in college i had a professor mention what a great band they were so i decided to give them another shot and im glad i did

I dig their minimalist jazzy sound but i think Marks baritone vocals are what make it all work. He has a way of making everything he sings seem happy and sad at the same time

Cure for Pain is one of my all time favorite albums and was in frequent rotation in my car CD player, especially when I needed a break from Nu Metal

I’m Free Now …swear he gets through that intro without taking a breath

I'm free now to direct a movie
Sing a song or write a book about yours truly
How I'm so interesting I'm so great I'm really just a ****-up
And It's such a waste to burn down these wall around me
Flexing like a heartbeat we don't like to speak
Don't talk to me for about a week I'm sorry it just hurts to explain
There's something going on that makes my guts ache
I got guilt I got fear I got regret
I'm just a panic stricken waste I'm such a jerk
I was honest I swear the last thing I want to do
Honest I swear the last thing I want to do
Is ever cause you pain

Cure For Pain is also a great one

… Someday
There'll be a cure for pain
… That's the day
I throw my drugs away
When they find a cure for pain

Candy

Candy asked me if she died if I could go on
Of course I said I couldn't and of course we knew that's wrong
But Candy I said Candy no you can't do that to me
Because you love me way to much for you to ever leave
Candy said she's made arrangements for me in the sand
And Candy said she wants me with her down in Candyland
Candy said she's made arrangements for me in the sand
And Candy said she wants me with her down in Candyland

Slow Numbers from The Night is another good one

Unfortunately he died on stage the same time I rediscovered them (or maybe that was what prompted it) so never got a chance to see them live

23 - Van Morrison

Van has such an unmistakable voice, you hear him singing and you know exactly who it is.

Wild Night

Ooh, woo-wee
Wild night is calling, alright
Ooh, woo-wee
Wild night is calling

Brown Eyed Girl is such a fun song to sing along to

Do you remember when we used to sing?
Sha-la-la, la-la, la-la, la-la, la-la tee-da
Just like that
Sha-la-la, la-la, la-la, la-la, la-la tee-da, la-tee-da

my favorite is probably Moon dance…when he hits those long high notes

You know the night's magic seems to whisper and hush
You know the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush

22 - Isaac Brock - Modest Mouse

I think I first heard Float On in a Nissan commercial or whatever and was so hooked I went out and bought the CD. They quickly became one of my favorite bands and a lot of that is due to Brock’s quirky vocals. I think he’s got some great range too

Finally got to see them live last year and thought they were great

While i might like some of their other stuff better overall, vocally some of my favorites are

Love the build up at the end of March In To The Sea

Well treat me like the sea, oh-so salty and mean, ah ha ha
Oh treat me like the sea, oh-so salty and mean, ah ha ha
Well treat me like the leaves, like the rats and the fleas
Bang your head like a gong 'cuz you call it all wrong
Move your tongue, klank klank, klank klank, klank klank, klank klaaaaank
Cut me down like the trees, like the lumber or weeds
Drag me out of the sea and then teach me to breathe
Give me forced health till I wish death on myself
Give me forced health till I wish death on myself
Ah ha ha! Ah ha! Ah ha! Ah ah! Ahaaah!

Ocean Breathes Salty
Well, that is that and this is this
Will you tell me what you saw and I'll tell you what you missed
When the ocean met the sky (you missed)
You missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye (you missed)
When the earth folded in on itself (you missed)
And said "good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell
(You missed, you missed) are really there
But I wouldn't hold my breath" (you missed, you missed)
You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death? (You missed, you missed)
You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?

Bury Me With It goes pretty hard

3rd Planet

Well, the universe is shaped exactly like the earth
If you go straight long enough, you'll end up where you were
The universe is shaped exactly like the earth
If you go straight long enough, you'll end up where you were
The universe is shaped exactly like the earth

As far as a favorite song I’d probably give you a different answer on any given day, but today we’re going with Spitting Venom

We were spitting venom at most everyone we know
If the damned gave us a road map
Then you'd know just where to go
So we carried all the groceries in
While hauling out the trash
And if this doesn't make us motionless
I do not know what can is to be said
What a rotten thing to say, such an awful thing to say
I didn't mean to bite you so really
What always did, what always did, what always had to sling
So let it drop
Let it all drop
Let it all drop
Oh, let it all fall off
Let it drop
Let it all drop
Let it all drop
Oh, let it all fall off

21 - Bob Dylan

I’d put his songwriting and guitar playing above his voice, and im kind of surprised he’s as highly rated on some Top Vocalists lists as he is, but i guess something about it just works, or at least it did. I saw him early 2000s and I thought it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I seen him again a few years later and I thought he sounded terrible. I don’t think he’s gotten better since then

That said he’s got such a great catalog of songs. I know @timschochet did a Top 100 or whatever that will do him much more justice than I will

Couple of my favorites

Shelter From The Storm

Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right

Hurricane

Subterranean Homesick Blues

Rainy Day Women

On a different note, I’m Not There and A Complete Unknown are 2 of the most boring movies I’ve ever seen

20 - Jack White - The White Stripes / The Raconteurs / The Dead Weather

Jack is another where his guitar playing is far better than his vocals, but something about that raw garage rock sound works for me

I got into The White Stripes back in college and they become one of my favorite bands but was never able to catch them live. Finally got a chance to see Jack live last Saturday and he did not disappoint. Just really feel like he loves making music and performing

the songs below are certainly not all encompassing of my favorites by him because some with sweet guitar riffs would be way up there

The Big Three Killed My Baby - love the raw emotion on this one

Don't let them tell you the future's electric
'Cause gasoline's not measured in metric
Thirty-thousand wheels are spinnin'
And oil company faces are grinnin'
Now my hands are turnin' red
And I found out my baby is dead

Apple Blossom - gets a little more mellow here

Lots of girls walk around in tears
But that's not for you
You've been looking all around for years
For someone to tell your troubles to

Truth Doesn’t Make A Noise

Hotel Yorba - such a fun little song

Well, it's one, two, three, four
Take the elevator at the Hotel Yorba
I'll be glad to see you later
All they got inside is vacancy

Same Boy You’ve Always Known

You're looking down again
And then you look me over
We're laying down again
On a blanket in the clover
The same boy you've always known
Well I guess I haven't grown
The same boy you've always known
Same boy you've always known

I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself - great cover…so is Jolene. Also did a nice cover of I Wanna Be Your Dog but not sure if he’s got footage of that out (too lazy to look)

The Hardest Button to Button - really rocks out on this one and one of my favorites. Was hoping to catch it live but he played it at the Sunday show but wasn’t able to make that one

I had opinions that didn't matter
I had a brain that felt like pancake batter
I got a backyard with nothing in it
Except a stick, a dog, and a box with something in it

Little Ghost

The first moment that I met her, I did not expect a spectre
When I shook her hand, I really shook a glove
She looked into me so sweetly, and we left the room discreetly
No one else could know the secret of our love

A Martyr For My Love For You

Effect and Cause

Well you can't take the effect
And make it the cause
I didn't rob a bank
Because you made up the law
Blame me for robbin' Peter
But don't you blame Paul
Can't take the effect
And make it the cause

19 - Les Claypool - Primus , Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade and like 10 other side projects

First of all, Primus Sucks and so do Les vocals, but Les continue to climb the ranks of my favorite artists, and while his funky bass hooks are the star of the show, somehow his vocals just work with it all

John The Fisherman
When he was young you'd not find him doing well in school,
His mind would turn unto the waters.
Always the focus of adolescent ridicule,
He has no time for farmer's daughters
.

Jerry Was A Race car Driver
Jerry was a race car driver
He drove so ******* fast
He never did win no checkered flags
But he never did come in last

My Name Is Mud
My name is Mud
But call me Aloysius Devadander Abercrombie
That's long for Mud, so I've been told
Told that by this sonsabitch that lies before me bloated, blue and cold
I've got my pride, I drink my wine
I'd drink only the finest 'cept I haven't earned a dime in several months, or were it years?
The breath on that fat ******* could bring any man to tears
We had our words, a common spat
So I kissed him upside the cranium with that aluminum baseball bat

Southbound Pachyderm

Pork Soda was the first album I bought of theirs, but Anti-Pop was when I really started getting into them, this was also back in college and I’d just play a ton of CDs driving around. It’s probably their most polarizing album but has a lot of my favorites

Natural Joe
But late at night he sneaks on down to the liquor store
For a bottle of sheep dip.
Natural Joe,
Got an easy flow.
Wherever he goes
They say "here comes Joe."

Lacquer Head
Sniffin' paint since the seventh grade
She was high on gin and gatorade
On turpentine she lost her luck
Fell in front of a speeding pick-up truck
He was a boy of soft demeanor
And he loved his carburetor cleaner
The vapor made a sweet aroma
He sniffed himself into a coma
Lacquer head feeds his one desire
Lacquer head sets his brain on fire

Eclectic Electric
I remember when I was a baby
staring in amazement at the sun.
Better shield your eyes now little baby
no one ever said you were the one;
no one ever said you were the one.
no never said you were the one
who can't be blinded by the sun.
I think I'm blinded by the sun.

If that’s not your thing go ahead and check out a full cover of Pink Floyd’s Animals

Gotten to see him live at least 3 times, back in college for Anti-Pop, Frog Brigade Animals tour and as part of the Sessanta tour last year and going again this summer

Isaac Brock almost cracks the top 20! Claypool does crack the top 20! This is my kind of list!

Modest Mouse has become a top 10 band of mine over about the last 20 years. There's just something about em. I can't necessarily explain it completely, but it's there. Hooky, quirky, smart lyrics......I first heard them when I found the EP "Everywhere and His Nasty Parlor Tricks."......I quickly consumed whatever I could. Their first four albums are perfect, imo......I've heard Brock is an A hole. I don't care. I think a fair amount of musicians are probly arrogant, and/or A holes to some point.

Tried to talk the wife into this but no go

18 - Garth Brooks

Blame it all on my roots
I showed up in boots
And ruined your black-tie affair
The last one to know
The last one to show
I was the last one you thought you'd see there

And I saw the surprise
And the fear in his eyes
When I took his glass of champagne
And I toasted you
Said, "Honey, we may be through,
But you'll never hear me complain."

'Causes I've got friends in low places

I knew about Garth because my mom was into county growing up, but never really was a big fan until I was in Sam Goody or one of those mall stores and heard Rodeo and immediately bought his Greatest Hits CD

That Summer might just be the best song written about bangin old ladies

That summer wind was all around me
Nothing between us but the night
When I told her that I'd never
She softly whispered "That's alright"
And then I watched her hands of leather
Turn to velvet in a touch
There's never been another summer
When I have ever learned so much

The Thunder Rolls he makes you feel the tension of a dude getting busted by his wife

She's waitin' by the window when he pulls into the drive
She rushes out to hold him, thankful he's alive
But on the wind and rain, a strange perfume blows
And the lightnin' flashes in her eyes
And he knows that she knows

Papa Loved Mamma is another good one

Well, it was bound to happen and one night it did
Papa came home and it was just us kids
He had a dozen roses and a bottle of wine
If he was lookin' to surprise us, he was doin' fine
I heard him cry for Mama up and down the hall
Then I heard a bottle break against the bedroom wall
That old diesel engine made an eerie sound
When Papa fired it up and headed into town
Oh, the picture in the paper showed the scene real well
Papa's rig was buried in the local motel
The desk clerk said he saw it all real clear
He never hit the brakes and he was shiftin' gears

The Dance is such a great song

And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end
The way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I'd have had to miss the dance

I had a dog I named Mud. Most of my friends got the connection but there were always those few that asked "Mud?" I would just answer "his name is Mud."

Think it starts at $1500 a person

17 - Prince

I’m not like world’s number one Prince fan or anything, but I do like his stuff and I would consider him one of the all time great musicians

Going to focus on a few of my favorites rather than just list all the hits

7 - this song got me to buy that goofy symbol album which I think is actually a pretty decent album overall

Darling Nikki

She said, "Sign your name on the dotted line"
The lights went out and Nikki started to grind

***** Control

Ill uh, just skip the lyrics for that one

Gett Off (sic)

So here we, so here we
So here we are, here we are in my paisley crib
Whatcha want to eat? (Ribs!)
Naw toy, I don't serve ribs
You better be happy that dress is still on
I heard the rip when you sat down
Honey, them hips is gone
But that's alright, I clock 'em that way
Remind me of somethin' James used to say
"I like 'em fat, I like 'em proud
U got to have a mother for me
Now move your big *** 'round this way
So I can work on that zipper, baby"
Tonight you're a star and I'm the Big Dipper
Na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na

My favorite it is probably 1999

Wish he could have stuck around longer, sounds like he had plenty of more music to put out

16 - Jim Morrison - The Doors

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn't get much higher
Come on, baby,
light my fire

I definitely went through a get high and listen to The Doors phase…Jim’s voice is almost hypnotizing at times, especially on songs like The Crystal Ship or The End

Like his more up beat stuff too like Touch Me

Come on, come on, come on, come on
Now, touch me, babe
Can't you see that I am not afraid?
What was that promise that you made?
Why won't you tell me what she said?
What was that promise that you made?
… Now I'm gonna love you
Till the heavens stop the rain
I'm gonna love you
Till the stars fall from the sky
For you and I

or Roadhouse Blues

Well, I woke up this mornin'
And I got myself a beer

Alabama Song is a favorite of mine and of course Break On Through

Amazed they got that many hits out in such a short time

That Doors movie is a lot of fun too…Kilmer did a great job channeling Jim

15 - Johnny Cash

Growing up I really only knew Johnny from A Boy Named Sue (as a kid we’d go Up North a lot and the music choices were basically a set of Oldies tapes like you’d buy from a TV advertisement with stuff like that and Monster Mash and Hello Mudduh, Hello Fadduh!)

Years later i remember hearing on the radio that he died, and I thought you know what I’m gonna go buy some of johnnys music. I grabbed his greatest hits and played that thing like crazy for quite a while

I Walk The Line (good movie too)

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line, mmm

One Piece At A Time just a fun goofy song that reminds me of Detroit and working in the auto industry. Lots of fun stories from my family about those days

Sunday Morning Coming Down I can just feel the hangover

Don’t Take Your Guns To Town

He drank his first strong liquor then to calm his shaking hand
And tried to tell himself at last he had become a man
A dusty cowpoke at his side began to laugh him down
And he heard again his mother's words
… "Don't take your guns to town, son
Leave your guns at home, Bill
Don't take your guns to town"
… Filled with rage, then Billy Joe reached for his gun to draw
But the stranger drew his gun and fired before he even saw
As Billy Joe fell to the floor, the crowd all gathered 'round
And wondered at his final words
… "Don't take your guns to town, son
Leave your guns at home, Bill
Don't take your guns to town"

and then of course Ring of Fire and Folsom Prison Blues and all kids of other hits, and then he goes out and just puts out an album of some of the best covers of all time…Hurt might be the best cover of all time, it wasn’t a tribute he completely changed that song and made it his.
Spoiler: Trent will not be making the list, although I will say I think he’s one of the most talented musicians of our lifetime but not a band I really ever got that into. Debating on going to see NIN live I heard they are amazing but gonna be expensive
There’s also a black keys / Gary Clark jr concert the night before (I’d be more there for Gary)
Probably whatever one I can convince my wife to go see

Anyway Johnny was such a great talent…timeless music

From what I understand, he has years worth of music already recorded that could still be released.

7 is one of my favorites but nothing touches the Purple Rain album. He was such an incredible musician.

Yep one of the best ever

I was toying around with a most talented musician list at one point planning to incorporate everything (talent, versatility, songwriting skills, production) but I just don’t think I’ve got the credentials or time to do it justice

I'm a big fan of the next 2 listed, Johnny Cash and The Doors. My favorite Doors song is "When the Musics Over." Such a shame that his demons lead him to being another member of the 27 club.

Cash's "Hurt" is amazing but I believe Disturbed's "Sound of Silence" is the best cover ever. Too bad Trent's or the Nine Inch Nail isn't making the list.
