My director cousin had Javier Bardem cancel on him late as the lead in his movie of the musical Nine and was frantic cuz the shoot was less than a month away. We were batting around names - i had even suggested Jack White off his cameo in Walk Hard, which Rob got a big kick out of from knowing him from when he dated Chicago star & friend RZellwegger - in complete desperation of an anyone-but-Banderas (who'd played Guido on Broadway & was pushing) campaign. Had quite a bit of back&forth then Rob texted, "Something big's comeup. Cant talk. Dont bring this up to anyone". Turns out, DD-L (who was not even a consideration cuz he had just put There Will Be Blood to bed and was famous for taking several years off between shoots) responded to Rob's agent's general call by sending, of all things for the World's Greatest Actor to do, an audition tape. He'd apparently always wanted to try a musical so, boom, three days and he was onboard and a total trooper & sweet guy the whole shoot. Wish my cousin had made him a better movie......
