Daulton Family Vacation - NoCal to SoCal (1 Viewer)

Can any sanfranos tell me if you can still sneak behind Fort Point at night? My Mary and i used to go there to freakydeak under the bridge. dont want to recommend it as the world's greatest sex spot this side of Pamukkale if you can't get there anymore and i imagine they've tightened it up.

Here's what I'm thinking so far:

Fly out Friday July 28 into Oakland (way cheaper than flying from BWI to San Fran).  Arrive around 4:30 left coast time and drive to San Fran, go to hotel and just chill.

Saturday July 29th - Explore San Fran/Alcatraz

Sunday July 30th - Do the GG/Woods roady and start the Rt 1 South journey.

Stay in Carmel night of July 30th.

Thoughts so far?

Look into Point Lobos State Park, just south of Carmel. Not crazy packed with tourists but some great scenic views with nice trails.

omg, Alcatraz and other tours are sold out for the end of July!  Is there any issue with me starting in SoCal and driving to NoCal?  If I'm going to San Fran I want to do Alcatraz and this tour seems like it hits all the spots mentioned and has availability the first week of Aug.

When I went, it was just a ferry that launched from a pier.  We waited in line maybe an hour.  It was a completely impromptu thing.

I wish I had more information for you (like which pier is launched off of), but it was about 12 years ago.  It may not even be there anymore. Don't give up hope, though.  Ask around when you get there.  The tour of Alcatraz doesn't need to be a fancy guided thing. The place speaks for itself.

This looks ok but I've only ever done Alcatraz on its own.  I was going to say dont do a guided tour because the audio one they give you on the island is really good, but it looks like this includes that.

Did it a couple years ago, part of a trip around the country. It actually was right about now, having spent 4th in Laguna with my Aunt and did a couple days in LA.

Awesome drive, if you golf, stop at Pebble. They let you walk out to view the 18th and there is a nice gift shop for PB swag.

Golden Gate Bridge, lunch in Sausalito, then whatever route floppho approves of to see the redwoods on the way to Muir Beach is one of the best touring days a fam can have in the 48
Agree with this. We biked across the Golden Gate and had the most phenomenal fruit pancakes at the Lighthouse Cafe in Sausalito. Phenomenal   day. Book Alcatraz early. Worth it.

Santa Barbara is worth a stop.  Tons to do on State St, Wineries, etc  Bacara hotel is great and is priced sub Otis

In So Cal, gotta do Malibu. Cruise down PCH towards Santa Monica. If you want a great, casual fish joint go to the legendary Reel Inn. If you want one of the best meals you will ever have go to Tar and Roses in Santa  Monica. Went Wed night - it's that good. Can walk around 3rd St Promenade after to people watch.

Getty Museum is worth it as well.  Close

If you go further down South you have Manhattan Beach, Huntington Beach (Waterfront Hilton is a great place for a family.) Laguna Beach and more

A day trip to Catalina island is awesome in the summer. Feels like you are in Cabo or Hawaii. Descanso Beach Club is the call during the day, Luau Larry's at night.

Further south you have San Diego. Tons to do and Del Mar opens in 2 weeks  Coronado Island is cool

Check concert schedules. Any summer concert at Hollywood Bowl, Greek Theater, Santa Barbara Bowl etc is a great night out.

Also check out fair schedules  Mid State in Paso, Ventura County, Orange County, San Diego

All good info here.  If you venture south of LA I would have some recommendations beyond those listed here.

There's a really cool interactive science museum on one of the piers closer to the Bay Bridge side.  Name escapes me but someone here will have it.  Pier 39 was fun, and there's sea lion hangout that might be populated by August (they go down the coast to breed earlier in the summer - we saw them in La Jolla in June).

At Fisherman's Wharf... if you played old acrade and pinball games, pop in on Musee Mechanique, a museum/acrade of amusement machines going back 100 years.  A lot of them are still playable.
I think you're talking about the Exploratorium at Pier 15, good spot for the family.  And agree on Musee Mechanique, unique spot.

Agree with others on Alcatraz, took me several years of living here to finally do it and really enjoyed it when I finally did.  If for some reason you can't make it there, then at least take the ferry to Sausalito, or do what most tourists do and rent bikes, ride across the GG Bridge and then take the ferry back into The City.

Most other spots have been recommended already.  Muir Woods can be a real #### show, and in the summer you usually have to take a shuttle from Mill Valley as the parking lot is full by mid-morning.  If the family is active, then the best way to see it (imho) is hiking in from near the Mountain Home Inn up on Panoramic Highway.  That link mentions the Tourist Club, a bar tucked into the woods that has to be hiked into which is awesome, but it's only open limited days to guests so it's unlikely you'd luck into one of those days.  Maybe if you tell them you know @El Floppo you'll get the hookup.

I'm big on exploring neighborhoods when I go to a City, so check out North Beach, Haight Ashbury, the Mission, etc.  That is one of the good things about those big double decker bus tours as you can get off and on and explore the neighborhoods you want to.

Golden Gate Park is worth checking out as well.  You've got museums, herds of buffalo, paddle boat rentals, and a brewery down at the end overlooking Ocean Beach.

So between LA and San Fran, stop for one night?  If so, where?
Either San Luis Obispo (if you want to do Hearst Castle it's nearby) or push up to Monterrey/Carmel.

OMG, every single Alcatraz tour is sold out through the middle of August!  With no Alcatraz and the good part of the highway closed, I'm thinking of scrapping this trip until December.  WTF plans #### so far out in advance?

Santa Barbara, without a doubt.  The Hyatt Centric right on the water is fairly reasonable.
