David Nelson and Donald Jones (1 Viewer)

Hey Gang,

So I try to pride myself on knowing NFL rosters top to bottom as I'm sure many of you do, and it's usually next to impossible to completely surprise me with a roster move. But I have to admit not knowing much of anything about Donald Jones and David Nelson, who have made the Bills WR corps. Who has scouting reports on these guys? What to make of them? I don't look at Roscoe Parrish and Steve Johnson as being secure enough in their roles that I can rule out Nelson or Jones making some noise potentially.

What have y'all got?

This may be a case of the other two guys (Hardy and CJax) being not very good.

Actually, I'm pretty sure of it.

Agreed, considering how little run either guy got during camp, I think this is more a case of "wow, Jackson and Hardy are really bad" but I still have to wonder. It seemed to me like Chad Jackson had his fans during the preseason, so it leads me to believe these guys had to have shown something, right?

I'm from Buffalo but not a Bills fan but from what I saw Willie Nelson and Tom Jones could have made the team, they are really bad (like 1st pick in the draft next year bad)

Steve Johnson got hurt last year but looked like a promising young WR (as Hardy was supposed to look) before he got hurt.Nelson has been making plays since he signed as a UFA. It's ironic that florida wide receivers traditionally struggle in the NFL and Florida fans don't seem to be a fan of this guy too too much(see post above) YET here he goes and makes an NFL team. He's not good enough to stop them from watching the waiver wire for his replacement, but the Bills aren't exactly big spenders so he just might be someone to root for this year.

The camp reports all seemed to say that Nelson looked pretty good and was playing really consistently. He showed up decently in the box score 3 out of the 4 weeks as well during the preseason.

I am surprised that Donald Jones made the team though. Especially over Chad Jackson and another UDFA Roosevelt.

I would say that it's either a special teams thing, or those guys were just cheaper than Chad Jackson and James Hardy. Neither Hardy nor Jackson played special teams, so that may have been their ultimate demise (although with not being standout players and getting hurt a lot). Then again, Ralph Wilson is fairly cheap and I could see him putting a high priority on going as cheap as possible in a season with no salary floor.

I thought Jackson was going to make the team though. All the camp reports seemed to be positive and he put up nice numbers in the preseason games as well.

Neither Nelson or Jones will supplant Steve Johnson or Roscoe Parrish barring injury though. Both of those guys have strangle hold on the 2 and 3 slots right now. Gailey actually LOVES Parrish. I expect him to finally be used more heavily.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the Bills roster right now is that they have TEN rookies that made the team this year, 5 of them UDFAs.

If I had to put money on 2 of those 4 making the team, I would have picked Nelson and Jackson. They both seemed to make a lot of plays in the preseason. Hardy just never showed any signs of development, and he seems to have serious durability issues. I really don't know much about Jones. I don't remember him making an impression on me as a WR or a special teamer.

As said above, though, none of these guys will have an FF impact. They are at best a #4 WR on a poor passing team.

I agree with the Parrish sentiment. He's listed as the #3 WR, He will be the slot, and will probably outperform the Bills #2, for the time being, Steve Johnson. Gailey looked to him often in the pre season, and will probably be Tren't checkdown guy.

I expected Nelson to make the team, no surprise there. He is everything Hardy was supposed to be. The guy is a huge target, runs excellent routes, and has great hands. He underachieved in college, but has been stellar in camp. Maybe having Tebow as his QB & being in an offnense he wasn't suited for had something to do with him underachieving. Nelson could use some muscle & experience, but I think he may become the longterm solution to a big possession WR Buffalo's needed for years.

I fully expected Chad Jackson to make the team, and possibly overtake Steve Johnson for the #2. I'm shocked they kept Donald Jones, it has to be a special teams thing. Jones won't see the field other than ST.
