Defensive Rookie of the Year? (1 Viewer)

GRIDIRON ASSASSIN

Footballguy
5th round pick Mark Anderson of the Bears with 12 sacks (should actually be 13, but he got a penalty for nearly decapitating Marc Bulger)

and Demeco Ryans?

Who are the other legit contenders?

Solid choices Hendo. I agree. Hawk has come on strong since his early struggles. And I loved Sims coming out - he's only got two things working against him:

A) Concussions

B) That Lion on the side of his helmet

sorta a homer pick, but I think Tamba Hali has to be mentioned....he doesn't deserve to get it but he isn't that far off.

6 sacks

5 FF

1 INT

59 tackles

Mark Anderson baby.

Situational pass-rusher with 12 sacks and clearly has skills. Demeco Ryans is my #2 and in any other year would be the DRoY.

ryans, and if its close at all it the voters are insane. toughest defensive spot to play, making all the calls on the field and if you have ever watched him, he is as solid a tackler as ive seen in recent yrs in the league.

Isn't Anderson a situational pass rusher? Guy came into today with 24 tackles on the season, no way he should even be in the discussion for DRoY. I'm sorry, but I'm not that impressed by a guy who sits on the bench 90% of the game, then comes in on obvious pass downs with a one track mind. It's great for the Bears to have that kind of depth to bring in a guy like that, but rookie of the year he is not.

Go tell that to Tatupu. Of course this year there's no beast named Merriman whose physical skills overpower the voter's thinking to forget about what it takes to lead a D, especially as a rookie. Last year Seattle had a top D and Lofa led it from TC. I'm just saying, it could happen.

So you advised everyone to vote AGAINST Brian Urlacher in 2000 right?

 Exactly the idea I have. Not to diminish Anderson's accomplishment, but Ryans has a much more important job to do and exectues it very well. The only thing I think that may snag him is the 339 yards of total offense the Houston Texans yield per game, bottom 10 in the league and only a small increase from the 364 they yielded last year. Anderson, on the other hand, is the leading sack artist on the #1 defense in the league. He is simply a drive killer, and a very important cog in their pass defense especially on those 3rd and long situations. While I think both have done a superb job, Anderson wins by virtue of his teams' accomplishments.

Good post. Not to say Tamba Hali is better because I haven't seen Anderson play enough, but Hali is a full-timer who gets game-planned against and is an absolute beast in the running game. He's 13th in the NFL among all defensive linemen in solo tackles and that's playing alongside BY FAR the worst defensive tackles in football.Must be nice lining up next to Tommie f'ing Harris.

Stay on point here. Yes he did put up 8 sacks. But he didn't win DROY because of the sacks, he won it because he of his high tackle totals as a MLB. So to now suggest that the tackles are worth a lot less...is a bit hypocritical. Should we simply award DROY each year to the rookie with the highest sack total?

Kamerion Wimbley is the best defensive rookie. His stats are solid, but the plays he makes are really impressive. He has very good "bend" around tackles to get to the passer. He has a real chance to become a very good player and he's shown plenty already, the problem is that nobody watches the Browns. Big, strong, & fast with good football instincts, a motor, and pursuit skills.

Didn't Terrell Suggs win the award in 2003 as a situational pass rusher? He had to be under 30 takles/assists that year.

Sacks are sexy, and Mark Anderson should be in the running.

No we shouldn't. But comparing the rookie season of Ryans to Urlacher is foolish when you are arguing sacks are overrated (or that tackles are underrated). It can be argued that Ryans was as much the recipient of poor teammates and a bad defense while Anderson was a often dominant pass rusher who had a game changing impact on multiple games. Personally, I didn't see many Texan games so I am not knowledgeable enough to know who is more deserving of the award. All I know is that Anderson had a tremendous rookie season by applying the pressure on the quarterbacks that won games for the Bears.

No we shouldn't award it based on 'most sacks' - but if he puts up most sacks by a rookie - or is within a 1/2 sack, I think he deserves serious contention. And he hasn't been lining up next to Tommie Harris either. He's been lining up next to Tank Johnson or Ian Scott. .... and another point, the first Pro Bowl alternate is playing in front of him (Alex Brown)

I was surprised it took this long to get him mentioned...I guess noone is paying attention to Cleveland anymore.

:goodposting: Anderson definitely deserves consideration, but I think the honor should go to DeMeco Ryans

Let's not forget Dawan Landry, full time starter on one of the best defenses in football...40 Tackles20 Assists10 Passes Defensed5 Interceptions3 Sacks1 TDAll as a 5th Round draft pick!
