Falling Skies leaves alot to be desired also. I really want to get into that show as I am a huge sci-fi fan. But so far none of its characters have reeled me in. The same can be said for Defiance.
Havent really been pulled in by a Sci-Fi show since BSG.
The only plausible explanations that I can think of are either they were renewed for a second season so late in the game that the amount of time it'll take to produce the second season is forcing the opener to start late or they are purposely allotting more time between the seasons so that the game can develop more of the story for the season.
Anyone see the shorts they put out? Just watched them - pretty good. I'm looking for a pretty big year two jump, otherwise I don't think this show lasts long.
The inability of this show to have any interesting plot is frustrating. It doesn't help that it keeps killing off anyone who looks to have a promising story. The main characters are boring and predictable.
I'm guessing others who have watched this still feel that the story is dull and the shows various flaws make it unwatchable (or at least undesirable), but after the first few episodes of this season, I really got hooked. I thought the finale was great, and am excited to see how season three starts.

Great second episode - continued on the strong season premier. Less of the vampire-like race, but they seem to have a big role in store for later on and, perhaps, in future seasons.
Pretty awesome season, and a really fantastic way to end the season. I mean, I fully understand this a grade B show at best, but it has come a long way, has a good story, and, if it has nothing else, certainly has my interest for the remainder of the series.
I hope they continue to develop the "defiance universe" so that there starts to be more to the show than the town. I think with the way they ended season 3, they've opened the store up to those possibilities and can start exploring space, start doing more, in-depth background on the various races, their cultures, and their previous home planets and histories. I think they have a good core cast that, for all of their minor or major flaws, really gel and have great chemistry.

I dunno. I got a "no way are we getting a 4th season" vibe out of it. Really felt like a series finale to me. And really, no way the Tarrs last another week without somebody offing them.

I read there numbers are down from season 2, but they went up slightly as the 3rd season went along. I sure hope there is a season 4. I really enjoy this show.

Same here. I haven't read that it was a series finale, but it looked like one.
