Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme sat out Wednesday's practice with what he and team officials said was a sprained right thumb, and he's questionable for Sunday's game against the New York Giants.

However, a league source said Delhomme has a partially torn ligament in the thumb and chances of him playing are not good.

Coach John Fox said Delhomme's status will be day-to-day. Backup Chris Weinke worked with the first team at Wednesday's practice.

Delhomme suffered the injury to his throwing hand in the first quarter of Monday's loss to Philadelphia.

If he got the injury in the first quarter and played the rest of the game with it, then why would it make his chances of playing now not good? I've been tempted to just drop him (and go with Rivers the rest of the way), so this news may finally let me cut the cord.

 Non comprende.By the way, there are many injuries where a player continues in the game only to realize that the damage is worse than expected and can't play after that. Adrenaline and cortisone shots may help this out. I wish I had a specific example, but I don't.

No Link, but John Clayton is currently being interviewed on ESPN Radio 1250 in Pittsburgh and said that Delhomme had ligament damage to his thumb, and he expects it to be released later in the week that Delhomme will not play this week.

Isnt that the same injury Roethlisberger played through last year? Im not sure on severity, but I think partially torn is partially torn and Roeth finished the year out

John Clayton has spot on this year with injury reports.

it might affect smith on the long ball but smith is notorious for taking those quick screens to the house. maybe a small tick down, but not much imo....

You all are jumping the gun a bit on the Steve Smith talk. This probably will not hurt Steve Smith as Chris Weinke has a MUCH stronger throwing arm than Jake Delhomme.Secondly I move a lot of video out of Charlotte and watching Jake in warmups he did not look good he was really favoring that thumb.

I concur. Also, with Weinke in there, I'm guessing teams will key on the run and dare Weinke to win it with his arm. That could lead to big numbers for Steve Smith.

This offseason could anyone see Leftwich or Plummer ending up in Carolina?

I could really see Plummer ending up there. I know he is also prone to make a (Jake) mistake but I think he is what could take this Panther team over the top and add alittle excitement intot his team.

Delhomme sat out again today, and according to an unidentified source on another message board Delhomme should be out for this weeks game and potentially longer.

Yikes, I have to pick between Delhomme and Roethlisberger in a snow storm. Looks like I have to play it safe and avoid a potential goose egg and start Roeth in a snow storm and without his two top WRs.

The direct quote from the message board was:
I heard from a very good source and I can't say who because I'm not supposed to know, but I'm not known to make this #### up, that Delhomme is definitely out and maybe for more than a game. The source is a physician involved with the situation.
