Derek Hagan - most underappreciated waiver wire guy (1 Viewer)

Flying deep under FBG’s radar, under even Waldman’s top 10 WR adds is a receiver that no is talking about. Oakland wideout Derek Hagan came into the game against Buffalo and put up 5/61 after being a healthy (relatively anyway) scratch from the active roster in week one. He’s been the Raiders most productive receiver all preseason, and when given the chance, he’ll snag any ball that’s in his vicinity. He certainly has Jason Campbell’s trust if not the coaching staffs. He's produced every time he’s been given the opportunity, and Hue Jackson has alluded to the keeping producers on the field. We'll have to wait and see if Jackson is a man of his word.

There are a lot of caveats to Hagan though. Right now, Ford and Murphy are out with hammy issues, and DHB has a slight problem with his knee. Everyone by now has taken note of Denarius Moore’s amazing game, but Hagan was that steady possession receiver that Campbell could count on. With no dependable receiving TE on the team, Hagan filled an important role and produced fantasy worthy stats.

Hagan now has the opportunity to be even greater part of the offense if Ford, Murphy and DHB are gimpy the next couple of weeks. If Hagan can continue his ‘move-the-chains’ role, it’s conceivable he could stick as a starter in this offense.

Anyway, I think Derrick Hagan is the most underappreciated waiver wire guy of the week. Worth a flyer anyway.

Here’s a recent excerpt from Raider beat writer, Steve Corkran:

Moore wasn’t the only wide receiver to make a huge impression. Veteran Derek Hagan was activated for the first time this season in light of the Raiders being without the services of receivers Jacoby Ford (hamstring), Darrius Heyward-Bey (knee) and Louis Murphy (groin/hamstring).

He caught five passes for 61 yards and performed the way he did throughout training camp and Oakland’s four exhibition games, when he was their leading receiver.

Some of your points are also the counter argument. Specifically, Hagan hasn't even been active on days when Ford, Murphy and DHB are healthy. Secondly, no one know how long any (or all) of the three will be out. If all 3 (or even 2 of the 3) come back relatively soon, Hagan will be watching from the sideline most of the game.I'm not saying that he should, mind you. I think Davis is a nut - but still thinks (WRONGLY) that DHB is a viable starting WR. IMHO, Hagan is a nice posession-type WR - a perfect compliment to guys like D. Moore/Ford/Murphy. But depending on the Raiders to use him correctly (and not use DHB) is wishful thinking at this point. I think Hagan will be their 3rd WR - and possibly useful if they run more 3 WR sets, but until Davis can bring himself to admit that DHB is a failed experiment, that could be a long time in coming.

I think DHB is just now showing flashes of talent. After all the patience Oakland has demonstrated with him, giving up on him now would be a big mistake, imo.

Moore is clearly the special talent here, though Ford is a superb player as well. Hagan is solid. The rest are sketch IMO. Chaz doesn't look right. Somebody else said they suspect he might still be hurt and I'd agree. DHB & Murphy are a couple of James Jones types. Nick Miller is fodder.

See, I think the problem is that other Raider WRs have already stepped up and have shown to have the talent that the Raiders are still hoping that DHB is capable of. It's similar to the Hester situation is Chicago - he's a great "talent" - but that talent hasn't turned into "great WR" (in fact in both cases, it still hasn't turned into "good WR") - it's still just "potential". At some point the coach/staff has to pull the plug...on both DHB and Hester, imho.
