DeShaun Foster (1 Viewer)

I'm in a 32 team dynasty league and he's one of my starting RB's (the other is Jamal Lewis :bag: ). The thing is I have a 5 year contract on the guy and I'm trying to decide what to do with him should any opportunities open up.

I had high hopes for him coming into the year but he hasn't done anything to warrant keeping him. I don't understand why he hasn't had better stats since defenses can't really stack the line against Carolina due to S. Smith and Keyshawn, yet he's barely able to get 50 yards a game.

Does he get kept at the end of the season and get fed D. Williams scraps or does he go into FA and end up a journeyman back...never to have any glory?

If I cut him I get a cap hit and am penalized for the majority of his salary and years. And as you can imagine it's hard to come by a contributing RB in a 32 team league (40 man roster size).

What are some of the more likely scenarios for him in the future.

NO BASHING OF DESHAUN lod2005 !!! :D

I too drafted Foster with high hopes. I've watched him several times this year. To me, it just looks like the guy is soft. He doesn't appear to run hard at all. He's slow hitting the holes and rarely breaks a tackle.

After this year, the writing is on the wall for Foster. I can't say any reason why the Panthers wouldn't give Williams a shot next year. Hell, they may give him a shot this year.

If you've watched the Panther's games, they have thrown a lot more in the second half. Foster would get more yards, if they would run the ball more in the second half of ball games.

I haven't got to see ANY Panthers games this year but that is one thing I was curious about. Seems like he's not getting very many carries. What the hell is wrong with Fox? Doesn't he know what his bread and butter is? Running the ball is what makes Steve Smith so dangerous. Seems like he's not interested in getting the running game going like in previous years and he just wants to make Steve Smith earn his millions and carry the team. What's he averaging...16 or 17 carries a game with a couple of receptions sprinkled in?

Foster's been pretty underwhelming of late though he has a good matchup this week against the Bucs. I'll be very interested to see if Williams becomes a factor now that he's back in the mix this week.

Do you think the lack of running the ball reflects Fox not having much trust in Foster to pound the ball in the 2nd half? Just wondering, since they seemed to run the ball a ton when Davis was there (obviously Foster is a different type of RB).

In the second half of games, if the Panthers have a lead, it isn't for long, and it usually isn't by much. They are having problems closing out games, and have to fight to get back into the game. I know Fox said against Cincinnati, they didn't run the ball more in the second half due to what they say the defense doing, and then the Panthers blew their lead, and once again had to fight to get it back (which they didn't). The Panthers fourth quarter against Dallas was absolutely awful. I hope they have regrouped over their bye, and figured out what is wrong.

Panther homers can chime in as far as how good of a beat writer this guy is but here's one reporter's take on the Panthers' RB situation:

At 3.7 yards per carry, Foster hasn’t exactly been the dominant runner he was down the stretch last season. If he doesn’t watch out, he could lose his starting job to rookie DeAngelo Williams. Williams showed promise early in the season with some big runs and was averaging 5.3 yards per carry before a high ankle sprain sidelined him the past three games. However, Williams is now healthy and should see plenty of carries in the second half of the season as the team looks to shake up its offense. Look for Williams to be the starter before the end of the season.

I think the fact the Panthers don't have a nice lead, or they are behind, and they start turning the ball over is why they haven't run the ball as much in the second half of games. Blown leads, being behind, and turnovers is rough on the run game. The fact they struggle on converting when it's 3rd down doesn't help either. They usually do better during the second part of the season, so hopefully they can go back to being more balanced on offense.

Were there any teams that were interested in him during the offseason last year before Carolina signed him again?

I don't think so, but IIRC he was injured in the offseason, so that probably killed any chance to be signed away for more $.

Carolina put the franchise tag on him, then re-signed him soon after.
They franchised him?!?!? They thought he was worth that much? I don't think any team would have given up the two first rounders for him. Seems like a desperation move by Carolina.

I don't think it was a desperation move. It gave them time to work something out. Davis was going to be cut, and they needed a running back, and they like Foster, they know what he can do, and he knows their system. They didn't want to pay the huge price for the free agents Alexander or James, mainly because of their age. They planned on drafting a rookie in the first round, so keeping Foster was in their best interest.
