Det-Sea Rule Question (1 Viewer)

Can anyone explain the scoring of Santuago's successful squeeze bunt in the 2nd inning of last nite's Tiger game? He bunted, run came home, and no throw was made. He ends up safe at first but was not awarded a hit nor was there an error charged. Ramon is credited with a sacrifice and a "free" atbat and is listed as 0-3 instead of 1-4 or 0-4. But how can there be a sacrifice if no out was recorded on the play? How there be neither hit nor error? What am I missing?

Stupid, maybe, but it's bugging me no end. Anyone got the puzzle solver?

It's called a "fielder’s choice/all safe." I think.

FIELDER'S CHOICE is the act of a fielder who handles a fair grounder and, instead of throwing to first base to put out the batter-runner, throws to another base in an attempt to put out a preceding runner. The term is also used by scorers (a) to account for the advance of the batter-runner who takes one or more extra bases when the fielder who handles his safe hit attempts to put out a preceding runner; (b) to account for the advance of a runner (other than by stolen base or error) while a fielder is attempting to put out another runner; and © to account for the advance of a runner made solely because of the defensive team’s indifference (undefended steal).
Hmmm. I might be wrong.

This seems like what it would have to be, but I would expect there to be some throw for it to be a Sac rather than a hit. Did the pitcher make a throw to Second?

He tried one of those 1-timer throws to the catcher and whiffed. I guess it was his Fielder's Choice to attempt a tough play that didn't work. Not an error, I guess, because they weren't expected to get him (?).
