Detroit Defense (1 Viewer)

Considering picking up this team defense, but did not see the game. So was this poor play by Seattle or is the Lions D really that good?

5 sacks, 2 fumbles, 2 blocked FGs, only 9pts allowed to Seattle

Like I said, this looks great, but is it a fluke?

No fluke. Saw the game, and this was a very active, punch-you-in-the-mouth defense. Quick to the ball. They looked very well coached. I'm sure Seattle was shaking off a bit of rust, but Detroit didn't make things very easy for them.

Not a fluke. Shaun Rogers may just be the best DT in all of football. The guy is a 6'4" 345 pound monster that should wreak havoc all year long.

Not only that, Rod Marinelli is one hell of a coach. This isn't the first time that his defensive schemes have given Hasselbeck and the Seahawks fits.

Matt Hasselbeck was sacked five times during the Seahawks' 9-6 victory in the opener Sunday. He was facing a Lions team coachced by Rod Marinelli, which matters because ... this was the most sacks for Hasselbeck since Sept. 19, 2004, when the Bucs (with Marinelli on staff as d-line coach) also sacked him five times.

The front 4 was able to get constant pressure in preseason, allowing for better coverage and flow to outside runs. I was waiting to see this in the regular season and vs. Seattle they confirmed it to me, really putting the clamps on Alexander and looking decent in pass coverage. I picked 'em up on waivers last nite to combine w/ the Minnesota D so that I get 4 free games vs. G.B.

Edit to add: E.Simms is the real deal and reminds me a lot of a quicker Z.Thomas.

They are a very good Defense and worthy of a #2 spot. Just make sure you look at the matchups because they are a very aggressive, Blitz a lot defense and if they are playing a mobile QB their weakness could get exposed.

I'm looking @ Favre twice a year, or even better, Rodgers... not Vick.

I followed them thru the preseason and felt they were a great sleeper defense this year .

I got them for $1 in the subscribers contest.

I also picked them preseason, but think STL and BUF may be better this year. STL shut down Denver, which is one of the best O's around. BUF put the clamps down on NE.

Yes, DET put a hurting on SEA, but they have a superbowl losers and madden duo of curses to hold them back.

Don't get too excited about them just yet. Afterall it is the LIONS!

Plus Seattle seems to be really missing OG Hucthinson and Walter Jones went out of the game with an injury. Their line was a sieve!!!

Shaun Rogers is a great DT though.

add in Eddie Drummond potienal on ST Detroit mades a nice Sleeper spot starter in the right matchup.

I picked them up in the 17th round of 17 rounds in a 12 team league as we are required to have two team defenses at all times on our roster. I played Atlanta last week...both defenses scored me 15 points each. I was pleasantly surprised by the defensive effort of the Lions last week...planning on starting the Lions D this week against the Bears.

The front 7 is the real deal.

Outside of Dre Bly the secondary is below average. If an oppenent has a quality o-line and passing game I'd bench the Lions D/ST.

yeah i think they missed hutch, but walter jones was only out for a play or two, i know hasselback got sacked on the first play jones sat out.as a lions homer i was as impressed with the defense as i have ever been-they didnt make too many stupid mistakes and kept all the checkdown passes from becoming big gains on missed tackles or something. if they dont give up the big play i think they are worth keeping on a roster to play in favorable matchups and they have the potential to be a week to week start.if you watch the game the lion who gave up the most plays including the pass at the end was dre bly...and it wasnt cuz he was gambling. rogers, sims and fernando bryant played awesome

The DL has been pretty darn good for the last few years but looked even better Sunday. Rogers was a terror, and James Hall had a really good game despite being blocked by Walter Jones for most of it (Jones' injury may have had something to do with this). Cory Redding looked good as well.

The linebackers have been a weakness due to injuries in recent years, and again we saw no Teddy Lehman and Boss Bailey only off the bench. But Sims is the real deal, and Paris Lenon and Alex Lewis looked serviceable. Decent unit, could be really good if it ever gets to full strength.

The secondary, which I figured would be a weakness, even looked good. Bly is very good, Kenoy Kennedy is solid, and Fernando Bryant played out of his mind. Bryant is really the key because he's been so bad ever since he came to Detroit. A resurgence would make this secondary at least an average unit.

One thing people don't realize is that the Lions D was pretty good early on last season before injuries hit hard. It's a good NFL unit with really nice fantasy potential.

Couldn't believe that was Fernando out there, I have never seen him play like that since we signed with the Lions. If he keeps up that play (and stays healthy) I totally agree with you.

The only thing I saw that was bad was they jumped off sides a few times, but Im sure the fact that it was the first game and they were all really pumped up had something to do with it. Over all I was pleased with the defense.

OK. They got lit up by a superior CHI team. Is anyone looking at them for the GB game? I'd like to think the SEA game is a better representation of their DEF than the CHI game.

The front 4 are very good. Unfortunately, the 7 guys playing behind them suck. There has to be a better option somewhere.

I admit I'm reaching only because Tampa has stumbled out of the blocks.

I've been adding Buffalo, since their schedule is super weak at the end of the year... all year round besides a few weeks actually.
