Detroit - where to dine (1 Viewer)

My wife and kids are flying round trip from Portland to Detroit in June for $450 per ticket. Southwest. Detroit is a big area of the country and not all of it is Somalia. Some of the nicest people in the world live there. I've never had a bad time in Detroit and I've probably been 15 times since 2008.
:hifive: Although the fact you've never let me buy you a beer when you're here outrages me.
Let's fix that. I'm flying in on the 13th and staying until the 23rd. I'll probably try and get a rental car so I am not at the mercy of other drivers. We're way out in Lake Orion, but perhaps we can get lunch during the week somewhere convenient for all. Dr. D? You around? I'll ping Sofa and see what he's up to...
Sweet. I can get away most weekdays for lunch as long as it's near Dearborn. Evenings are hit and miss with softball and my son's baseball... I'm wide open that weekend. Too bad the Tigers are on the road while you're here...
:raiseshand: I could probably do a lunch 13th 15th or 16th

I have Tigers tickets on the 25th, but I also have my cousins wedding. Seems like I can do both. Anyone else have tickets that day? I might bring Greco as my date.

Sorry, GB. You'll find that GM is an all-welcoming, come one, come all type of sort. Anybody who wants to get together in Michigan the 10 days I'm there will most certainly be welcome.

And yes, I really enjoy Michigan beers quite a bit. I say that as a man who lives in the fertile land of Oregon craft beers. Michigan has some great ones.

Sooooo true. Rochester Mills and Dragonmead are outstanding on the east side of the state. Atwater, meh.

I am aware of them being great, but unfortunately did not become a beer snob until I moved away from nw ohio so I have not dabbled. Part of the appeal behind clubhouse bfd, assuming they have everything I would want there. Can I get a top five? Ten?

You are about 30 minutes away but the the Union and the Woodshop in Clarkston have very good food and are about a mile or 2 off I 75.

2young, my wife and I are running Saturday morning before the wedding. My guess is her inevitable hangover doesn't allow us to get to Stoney Creek in time and we just run around Utica, but that place looks awesome. I'll push her to get up early enough for us to head up there. Early afternoon wedding, so probably not enough time to head over to Macomb unfortunately.
If you don't want to go that far, Dodge Park is a closer alternative and you can pick up the Clinton River Trail: https://www.sterling-heights.net/bins/site/templates/default.asp?menu_imagesetid=1&area_2=pages/gov/citydepts/parksrec/cityparks/dodge+park.dat&area_1=pages/nav/gov/citydepts/parksrec/cityparks.dat&area_3=0.dat&area_0=0.dat&area_8=0.dat&objectid=B1AA392E0&ml_index=11&NC=2348X If you do get to Stoney, there is a perfect 10K paved loop. Park at the boat launch (You can get directions at the gate). I prefer running the MTB trails. Its an easy 5+ miles around the outside, or you can really punish yourself by cutting the middle with the hard loops (they'll have maps at the gate).
I'll keep that plan B to myself and just send her info on Stoney Creek. The 10K would be perfect as we were looking at 6 or 7 low and slow miles that day, my guess is given our state we will pass on the punishment but if we wake up surprisingly gearing to go it's good to know there are options.
Saw this posted on the FB of the 1/2 I am running out at Stoney next weekend: https://www.facebook.com/131830443545841/photos/pb.131830443545841.-2207520000.1399377373./695159380546275/?type=3&theater its a map of the MTB trails. While the paved trail around the lake is awesome, pavement sucks and this loop is easy, except for one big hill. If you follow the map up to marker 16 you end up at one of the highest points in the county. And, I haven't read the whole thread to see if you settled on a cab company, but if you do not have anything yet, Google up Metro Cars Detroit. More pricey than a cab, but much more reliable and comfortable.

I live right there between Romeo and Utica, about a half mile away from Stony Creek. Definately hit that up for a run, or you can do the Macomb Orchard Trail. http://www.macombcountymi.gov/macomborchardtrail/index.htm

I assume you are staying at some of the hotels right of M-53?

If you are staying in Utica then Red Ox is good Dooleys is probably better, but more of a bar, and also Champps is close by too.

Locker room is a college bar if you want to hit that up after the wedding for more of party Usually is pretty busy. Hatchey's is also good it's Darren Hatcher's bar, sometime live bands play there.

Ranking for sportsbars to watch draft I would go

1. Dooleys

2. Red Ox

3 Champps

Dooleys address and website: http://www.dooleysirish.com/food.php

12414 Hall Rd.
Sterling Heights, MI
586-323-3501

Red Ox address:

45411 Park Ave, Utica

Champps: http://champps.com/
12515 Hall Rd · Utica

Hatchey's
http://hatchys.net/

The Locker Room

If staying in Romeo, downtown Romeo is nice but not very big. No real chains there, but nothing really to recommend either.

There is a nice area right at 26 Mile off M-53 in Washington Township. It has a B-dubs, Target, Kohls, Meijer etc if you need anything.

There is also a couple of decent restaurants right there that are good

New good Italian joint
http://www.freep.com/article/20140416/ENT08/304160141/Sapori-Sicilian-Italian-restaurant-Washington-Macomb?bcsi-ac-2aaa279b9b3be950=226F63E600000005tIH7+SOO7EVql5S6aVhZk4aksN0UAAAABQAAAK9VEgCAcAAACAAAALpQAQA=

And finally Stony Creek Roadhouse could be nice for draft or dinner

location: 3000 26 mile rd, Shelby twp

I'm not familiar with that brewery. I like Wisconsin breweries, but I don't think they have anything on par with Bells or Founders in terms of the number of world class beers.

Bells, Founders, Darkhorse, and Kuhnhenn are the top 4 breweries IMO. There are a dozen or so other great breweries you can get across the state, but I think you can't miss going after those breweries.

Shorts and New Holland really good too

The Locker Room is still around and kicking! I had a buddy that lived not far from there and we used to have some fun at that place. IIRC that's where they would hand out drumsticks for you to beat on the table with and they'd give out playing cards when you walked in the door. You had to find the member of the opposite sex that had the same card as you and then you both could get a shot from the bar or something. They also had an old dentist's chair or something at the bar. They'd sit you down in it and pour shots down your throat. Doesn't sound like as much fun now that I'm pushing 40, but we had some fun times in that place back in the day. Definitely used to be a little on the rowdy side but always fun if you had a good-sized group.

Re: craft brews: Can't go wrong with just about anything from Founders or, really, any of the others already suggested. If you see something from Perrin Brewery on tap give that a try too. They're relatively new over here on the west side of the state but I haven't disliked one of their beers yet. Not sure if they've made it over to the D yet though. Brewery Vivant and Harmony Brew Company are a couple more from over here that may have made their way across the state by now and that make really good beer.

I had a great time doing this in Kalamazoo and the lower west coast.

I'm guessing if I made it to Detroit (Saints game this year...) I would hit some classic old Polish restaurant and other ethnic places. I have no idea why I think that's what's good up there.

The one thing I miss about south Florida, is that there's no coney island restaurants here. I'm heading up for Christmas in Detroit this year, so I'm looking forward to it.

One must do some time in the D before they deserve an escort to the Ivanhoe.

Otherwise, they get Polonia.

Last time I was there I took my buddy from Pittsburgh, and two chicks tried to sell us a compressor of some sort that they had in their back seat. My buddy thought it was funny as hell, I found it normal. In Detroit everyone needs a compressor I said, it's what we do. :)

I finally made it there a couple of months ago. Food was great, felt like I was in Poland or Hungary in the 1940s. The location might freak some the burb dwellers out though. Some guy tried to sell us meat out of his trunk. Looked like some good whole tenderloins and NYs. Probably jacked a truck out of Eastern Market. There was no ice or anything on it. I said it is not refrigerated and the guy says "Don`t worry man it was frozen solid yesterday"

Meat out of the truck is the best thing about Detroit. :hifive:
The guy wanted 50.00 for the whole trunk load, after I say no he comes back with 25.00 for the whole thing. I should have bought it and fed it to my dogs. Had to be 30+ lbs of steaks.
Meat out of a truck is more common in Michigan than any other place I've lived. I've always wanted to know where they really get that meat, I'm sure there is a 20/20 on it somewhere.

Hey MAC, How'd the trip go?
had a blast. Pro tip on Clubhouse bfd. So great we made a detour on our way back from northern michigan mid week and stopped again. Had to cut ourselves off after only two all day founders though, had another three hours to drive. We were too old for the Red Ox crowd, but Hacks Saturday after the reception Saturday was great. Too bad my wife got too far in the bag and we had to head home about one. Brother in law and a couple of others made some friends and ended up out til five am. They didn't perform so well on their trek with us up to northern michigan the next day lol
