Go to the ghetto areas in either (like any major city) and you can find out. Just glad I'm not stuck in Detroit. Couldn't pay me to live in that dump again. Spent my high school years there. Awful economy, cold as #### during the winter. Very depressing place overall to be.

I also moved out of the Detroit metro area last year. Oakland County is a nice place to live with great people but that entire state is going down the drain and it was a depressing place to live. No jobs, terrible weather, third world roads, and an economy that is based on a failing auto industry. It is however NOT the armpit of America. I moved to NYC and I would vote Newark, NJ as the winner of that title. That being said, there's a reason that roughly 2 million people live in the immediate metro area, while less than 800k live in the city.The downtown area is actually quite nice, too bad the city is run by children. (mayor and city council too)Alot of problems could be fixed if the State was allowed to assume control temporarily, but that would probably cause riots.

The people of Detroit have the government they deserve. Not only did they elect this pimp-thug once, but re-elected him.

What a joke, to think people actually care what that idiot has to say. Cutting into the game to listen to the "thug mayor" try and make it sound like he actually gave a S#%$. And to have to listen to his supporters give him like a 2 minute ovation when he came to the mike, while we're missing the game, was like a kick in the nards. Who cares, take his ### to jail.
If you think downtown Detroit is nice you have obviously never been anywhere. Its a dump, plain and simple. Theres vacant buildings everywhere with squatters living in them. Broken windows and or boarded up windows right in the downtown core. Detroit has something like 400 murders a year ... that is absolutely insane. Like someone else said the roads are terrible. I live in southwestern ontario and everytime i go over there i fear for my car. The pot holes look like giant meteor's have hit the road the night before. I was born and raised in Detroit (not proud to admit it) and the best thing I ever did with myself is getting the hell out of there 2 years ago.Downtown is awful. It'll be awhile before that'll be turned around (if ever).

PS the Canadian dollar has no longer suprassed the US dollar .... in the $0.95 range right now. I'm unfortunately a loyal sports fan and unfortunately I grew up as a Lions fan during the Barry Sanders era .... now as much as I try to find a new team .... i just can't be that guy. I went to De-Toilet once. Never again....living in Portland, Oregon, I have realized how lucky I am to wake up in this beautiful city!!!
