Did "Canceling" Babylon Bee's Political Satire Change The Future Of All Social Media Forever? (6/5/22 12:30 PST) (1 Viewer)

Direct Headline: ‘Fulfilled Prophecies’: Babylon Bee Releases List Of All Its Satire That ‘Came True’

...Babylon Bee CEO Seth Dillon released a list of nearly 70 pieces of satire that he says have come true. “Jesters do oft prove prophets,” Dillon remarked, quoting from William Shakespeare’s King Lear....“I don’t think we’re all that good at predicting the future....I think we’re just bad at staying ahead of reality....The people working hardest to turn the world into a parody of itself should get most of the credit....They’re the reason our satire comes true.....”

https://twitter.com/SethDillon/status/1528915916171378688

What are some examples of The Babylon Bee’s fulfilled prophecies? In May 2017, the outlet published an article entitled ‘2 + 2 = 4,’ Insists Closed-Minded Bigot — a reference to “Nineteen Eighty-Four” by George Orwell, in which loyalty to the novel’s totalitarian regime is believing the lie that “2 + 2 = 5.” In December 2021, USA Today covered a debate among math educators regarding purported racial bias in mathematics...

As time goes on, many of The Babylon Bee’s predictions are fulfilled days after they are publicized. In an article called Surviving Inflation: 9 Easy Ways To Save Money On Your Thanksgiving This Year, the outlet suggested that Americans should replace turkey with a can of Spam to avoid inflation-related costs. A mere ten days later, an NBC segment likewise argued that families should find turkey alternatives due to rising price levels....

Most recently, The Babylon Bee published an article entitled Disinformation Governance Board Determines All Criticism Of Disinformation Governance Board To Be Disinformation. Less than three weeks later, President Biden’s Disinformation Governance Board was indeed overcome by disinformation....

....The Babylon Bee has also won some unlikely fans — including Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. The multibillionaire even consulted with Dillon before buying a substantial stake in Twitter — from which The Babylon Bee had recently been suspended.....“Musk reached out to us before he polled his followers about Twitter’s commitment to free speech....He wanted to confirm that we had, in fact, been suspended. He even mused on that call that he might need to buy Twitter. Now he’s the largest shareholder and has a seat on the board.....”

.... Babylon Bee editor-in-chief Kyle Mann - “I think Democrats every morning just pull up The Babylon Bee, and that’s where they get their policy ideas.....”

“What's the point of having f--- you money if you never say f--- you?” — Bobby Axelrod

The controversy with the banning of The Babylon Bee's Twitter account before Elon Musk made a hard push to overpower and purchase Twitter itself might end up as one of the most unlikely, but most critical case examples of how seemingly small events change the trajectory of America's future when it comes to the First Amendment.

Political satire is protected free speech. This has been long established by SCOTUS regarding their interpretation and rulings on the issue. But the problem moves past just the nuts and bolts of free speech and pushes into the ugly unspoken issue of when the actual truth gets too uncomfortable and begins to sway the political narrative in the national daily media cycle that starts to cost you actual votes. Was the attempted "canceling" of Babylon Bee because they "violated" a Twitter guideline and rule, or was it because they were simply getting too close to the truth too often?

Consider CEO Seth Dillon points out that in order for The Babylon Bee to have it's Twitter account unlocked, he would need to agree formally, by admission on the system, that he acted in a manner using and promoting "hateful speech"  This leads into the ugly question on when regulation becomes a form of partisan purity test. Which becomes dangerous to our society if Twitter is commonly accepted as the "town square" of public discourse.

The other "truth" issue with all this is that Elon Musk has proposed several times about making Twitter's algorithms into "open-source".  Twitter's '"content moderation" relies on these programs and algorithms to track and flag certain "hateful" content. Under Twitter's old regime, these algorithms are proprietary and removed from public view. But with open sourcing, it's easy to see why the radical woke hard left and the establishment Democrats in power would be completely terrified - Now there's a pathway to explain why someone with liberal viewpoints is " lightly moderated" while someone else with a viewpoint less favorable to Team Blue might be "censored" instead.

This of course brings back the large scale debate about Big Social Media and Section 230 protections - When does one act and enforce as an editor and/or moderator, to the point where they are no longer a platform, but actually as a publisher with the new vast implied responsibility and large scale liability in tow?

By the attempt to silence/cancel The Babylon Bee, did the radical left and the current core of the establishment Democrats trigger a chain of events where Elon Musk, with his massive leverage and financial might, was pushed over the edge to purchase Twitter, and thus the domino effect will mean sweeping changes to Big Social Media for America's future?

Questions To Discuss:

Did Team Blue open up Pandora's Box to change their previous dominance of Big Social Media that will cost them countless future elections?

Do you believe the attempted silencing of Babylon Bee was the main trigger for  Musk's push to buy Twitter?

Do you believe "The Streisand Effect" in in play here? Will every attempt by Team Blue to silence opposition, such as the Libs Of TikTok, create this kind of bounce back with nearly lethal election consequences?

Do you want all Big Social Media to have their "Trust And Safety/Enforcement" algorithms Open Sourced?

Should Big Social Media lose current Section 230 protections? Why or why not?

Is CEO Seth Dillon right? Is current Big Social Media enforcement simply a partisan purity test?

Do you believe political satire should remain as protected free speech? To what limits?

When does "content moderation" simply become targeted censorship?

Do you believe The Babylon Bee was targeted for simply getting too close to the truth too often?

I'll leave this here for others to discuss.

Direct Headline: Political Satire Is Protected Speech – Even If You Don’t Get the Joke

...the First Amendment clearly protects the kind of satirical speech.... Political satire and other parodic forms are an American tradition that goes back to the country’s founding. The amicus brief explains that “Facetious speech may be frivolously funny, sharply political, and everything in between, and it is all fully protected by the First Amendment, even when not everybody finds it humorous.”.... Even when the speech offends, it may still claim constitutional protection. While the State of Louisiana may not have seen the parody, the First Amendment still applies. Second, parodic speech, by its very definition, has no intent to cause the specific serious harm that the charge of incitement or similar criminal liabilities requires...It’s a crucial form of social commentary whether it makes people laugh, builds resilience in the face of absurdity, or criticizes the powerful....

....Publisher Larry Flynt provoked a lawsuit for damages for satirizing televangelist Jerry Falwell in a fake Campari ad in Hustler magazine. The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously agreed in Hustler v. Falwell, 485 U.S. 46 (1988), that a parody, which no reasonable person expected to be true, was protected free speech. The justices also stated that upholding the lower courts' decisions would put all political satire at risk....

I think they try to cancel more, but most dgaf and go on.   Still some great stuff and specials out there.   I thought the last ones from Gervais and Chappelle were great.

Any time conservatives try to do humor it should be canceled.   :P

SATIRE: Psaki Says Parents Unable To Obtain Baby Formula Should Just Feed Their Babies A Margarita, Put Them In Kickboxing Class

During a press conference aimed at praising the Commander-in-Chief's flawless track record, Press Secretary Jen Psaki begrudgingly took a question from some gloom-and-doom journalist describing parents' struggles in finding baby formula. Psaki guffawed, saying parents unable to obtain baby formula should just feed their babies a margarita and put them in kickboxing class....The press secretary and future MSNBC host explained how margaritas and kickboxing are a perfect way to unwind after a long, tough day of having no food to eat...

"I know some parents see having no formula as less than ideal, but there are things you can do. Stop being a bunch of Debbie Downers," said Psaki while twirling a crystal goblet of finely-aged Chardonnay. "Things aren't so bad! Inflation isn't even real; The Disinformation Governance Board just told me it's a fairy tale economists tell their children at bedtime. No formula for your infant? Big deal! Give it some caviar drizzled with whipped mangosteen honey on Himalayan spelt wafers for crying out loud!"...The Disinformation Governance Board issued a statement—in musical form—confirming that everything Psaki said about the Disinformation Governance Board was correct....

The problem the radical left and the core of the establishment Democrats have with the Babylon Bee is it gets too close to the truth.

64 percent of all working Americans are living check to check. That means countless working class every day people are one or two bad situations away from being homeless.

Krystal and Saagar are right, "Limousine Liberal" attitudes by someone like Psaki appeals to wealthy donors, not the working class. And why not just make the lives of working class Americans better? How about focusing on that?

SATIRE: 'Where Did People Get The Idea It Was OK To Attack Supreme Court Justices?' Asks Chuck Schumer Wearing Big Foam Finger Reading 'KILL KILL KILL'

After eighteen months of screaming about politicians' inflammatory rhetoric leading to violence, the assassination attempt on Justice Kavanaugh has left Democrats puzzled. "It's hard to fathom," said Elizabeth Warren as she tossed tomahawks at a Justice Thomas poster. "We called for revolution, claimed women's lives were at stake, and warned judges they would pay a terrible price—all clearly peaceful, nothing like the bad orange man! How could our supporters have turned violent?"

...Democrats are reportedly hoping the assassination attempt does not distract from their condemnation of inciting political violence. "The timing of the attempted murder is such a bummer for us," said Schumer. "All you liberals out there, please—NO more trying to assassinate judges until the January 6th hearings are over, ok? Don't screw this up for us."

At publishing time, Black Lives Matter leaders were demanding to know how Americans could have gotten the idea that violent riots were an acceptable form of political expression.

Schumer's speech is protected speech. The problem for the Democratic Party is that it's protected under the same pathway as Trump's speech on J6.

I don't agree with what Trump did on J6. Just because something is not illegal does not mean it's absolved from being unethical. Also it's bad leadership, bad example and real people got hurt, and even some killed in the fallout. It damaged the Republican Party for the long term with no practical political gain from it. Also the issue arises - Does [This Action] make America a better place or not for our children's future?

Under that test, what Trump did was unacceptable. It did not make America a better place. But in the same way, what Schumer did was unacceptable and did not make America a better place. But both, who wanted to grandstand to get more media coverage, are protected by Brandenburg.

Team Blue can't pretend like their version is more pure. But they do and they are and they are trying to sell that.

The problem with Identity Politics is it can only be enforced internally with zealot level conformity.

Submit or be purged.

The "in group" can only justify it's behavior if everyone dogmatically agrees. No matter the contradiction to logic, reason and practicality.

This is why the Babylon Bee was always at risk of being "cancelled"  It laughs at the blind agreement and mocks how far the radical left will take their ideology, even at the cost of what most would see as pure common sense.

Attacking the Bee triggered Elon Musk to act, which changed the entire landscape of Big Social Media.

Light a fuse. Start a war.

Some of the Babylon Bee's headlines are pretty funny.

Crazy.

Direct Headline: Rowan Atkinson hits back at cancel culture and comedy: ‘Every joke has a victim – that’s the definition of a joke’

Rowan Atkinson has had his say on cancel culture and the effect it can have on comedy, believing you should be allowed to make jokes about ‘absolutely anything’. ...Many comedians over recent years have come under fire for their material being too near the knuckle, but Rowan doesn’t believe anything should be off-limits to be politically correct....Rowan has previously rallied against cancel culture and even campaigned for a modification to the UK’s Religious Hatred Bill in the mid-naughties to allow performers are leeway to criticise religion within their act, as well as to have the notion of ‘insult’ removed from the UK’s Public Order Bill....

He told the Irish Times: ‘It does seem to me that the job of comedy is to offend, or have the potential to offend, and it cannot be drained of that potential. Every joke has a victim. That’s the definition of a joke. Someone or something or an idea is made to look ridiculous. I think you’ve got to be very, very careful about saying what you’re allowed to make jokes about. You’ve always got to kick up? Really? What if there’s someone extremely smug, arrogant, aggressive, self-satisfied, who happens to be below in society? They’re not all in houses of parliament or in monarchies. There are lots of extremely smug and self-satisfied people in what would be deemed lower down in society, who also deserve to be pulled up. In a proper free society, you should be allowed to make jokes about absolutely anything.’

SATIRE: Man Starting To Wonder If He Shouldn't Have Invested His Life Savings In An Imaginary Token Saying He Owns A Digital Painting Of A Cartoon Monkey

At publishing time, Johnson realized it was a bad strategy to go straight from 100% of his savings being in stocks to 100% of his savings being in NFTs, and it was now time to go all-in on cryptocurrency. A few weeks ago, one of the Staff members mocked me about using the "Direct Headline" tag. My best guess is it was to try to draw me out, try to incite me, then try to find something to ban me over. But by mocking me in public, from a position of authority, it sent the message that was OK for others to do it as well.   But then again I tag everything. I tagged above as "Satire", the reason I do that is because eventually one of the radical leftists will start slamming the Report Button saying I posted an article and tried to pass it as a legitimate article. I time stamp my top level threads because I want to make it evident I won't post a top level thread more than once in any 24 hour period, again, to prevent someone from gaming the Report Button to say I'm flooding the forum with new topics. I also attribute everything, right upfront, to deny the ability for someone to game the Report Button to say I am using someone else words as my own. I use Direct Headline so I can port over an article title to a topic title without a problem. If it's good enough for the WSJ and passes their legal and hard vetting, it's good enough to title a thread topic.

I shouldn't have to do any of that to post and reply in the PSF, but here we are. It's more than evident there are no small number of people in this forum who want myself permanently banned. And for what? It's basically impossible to silence me, gaslight me, sealion me or put me down.

The point being, when you oppose the Identity Politics culture, you have a zero margin for error.

Kevin Hart apologized for something he did years before he was about to host the Oscars and the cancel culture still wanted his blood.

So never apologize. Which is what the Babylon Bee did right here. They were locked out of Twitter and they refused to apologize for satire.

Zealots who shout about intolerance who have not one single tolerant bone in their entire body. My take? Let them rot in their own filth. Conservatives don't need to be party to any of that. Just exercise the power to walk away and demonetize everyone who attacks us.
