Difference from elite to competent (1 Viewer)

There are of course those high elite qb's. Brees, Brady, Rodgers, Stafford might be on the bubble but gets hurt to much for me. While I understand the importance of an elite qb in a pass happy league and would gladly take Aaron Rodgers in the First round I have always wondered if you could take another approach. There are plenty of competentquarterbacks that still put up decent numbers. Eli manning, Schaub, Big Ben, Philip Rivers Etc.. Is there a big enough gap to justify taking an elite qb in the first three rounds? Would you be better off drafting a high end position player and using one of the decent qb's in later rounds?

Depends on the scoring. 4 points or 6 points for passing TDs?

I'm most likely taking a QB in round 1 if I cant get one of the holy trinity of top 3 RBs. The RBs after them just have too many questions to warrant a first round pick on.

And if either of Brees/Brady/Rodgers happen to be there in round, I scoop them up no question about it.

I think this might be my strategy this year too, although I've resisted taking a QB early for so long that I'm not sure I can pull the trigger. But looking at the array of RB's I just can't fathom taking one of them so high.

All I can say is there is nothing like the luxury of plugging a QB in that you KNOW will produce 20+ points a game.

I tend to wait on QB (never drafted one in the first three rounds and that is likely out of 60+ drafts over the years), but I have found that when I win or have a dominate team, it is because one of the guys I waited on tended to put in a top 7-like season (guys like Brady in his breakout year, Trent Green, Matt Schaub and Rivers cost me little and got me a lot). I do remember one year where I had a decent team, but was a mess at QB (I think in a 12 teamer, I had QBs 20 and 24) and I barely made it to .500. So while I do not think you need to grab an elite one early, you need to make sure you are covered...for example going into 2012, you can get Schaub and Cutler in that 12-15 area for QBs...but, if you go that route, you better make sure you walk away with both.

The problem I have with this part is that all season you're going to be kicking yourself over which one to start. The guy who said that there's nothing like the luxury of a stud QB was right. I'd add to it that there's nothing like the luxury of a stud QB that you got in a late round, but getting one there is easier said than done.

That's a good point. I know the argument can go either way but, only speaking for myself personally, when I see people post their teams that won championships I have always seen elite qbs involved. As one guy mentioned before there is a luxury to having a 20 plus starter a game but in my eyes it is almost a necessity to take your team to the next level playoffs etc.. While I wouldn't cry that I have Eli Manning I would still love to have a player like Rodgers. I think the biggest difference to me is not just the constant consistency (which many argue you could still get from middle round talent)at such a high level but also the ability to blow the roof off. I lost in the playoffs even though I was up 27 points because drew Brees put up 40 points against the giants. This to me is why I pick them, their floor is usually the middle packs ceiling and their own ceiling can alone win a game.

I lost my championship against cam newton. Last year stafford wasn't stafford this year. It was vick the uear before Every year there are guys that move up and down the ranks. Sounds cliche but you draft the best players and don't target positions. I've won a bunch but more often than not its a qb committee situation and I comb the waiver wire for those gems and it seems like each year I can hit one. The good thing about the qb late strategy is if you draft well your team will be very deep and if you hit that qb in the mid rounds or off the waiver wire (cam/Vick/rg3??) it makes you tough to beat. Definitely a little more risky to some extent but it's worked very well for me.
