Digital Camera pic of the day (1 Viewer)

From my recent trip to Michigan/Lake Michigan:

Falling Down
I like this one. It follows the rule of thirds very nicely. I would have loved to see it vertical as long as you were able to zoom in enough to cut the top off where you have it now. I feel as if there is just a bit too much excess in each corner (but I like the overall picture, was not intended to be a negative)

I like this a lotAwesome, nice capture
Thanks! I have taken a lot of pictures in the last couple of years that I taken to work to show my friends. This one has gotten the most comments. I am thinking about taking it to the Marine recruiting office and to try and find the soldier so that I can give him a copy.

Hey camera guys, I'm getting my wife a new camera for her birthday. I'm looking to spend around $250 - 400. She's new to photography and will use it mostly to take pictures of our daughter. I had my eye on the Nikkon D3000 but was hoping you guys could give me some insight. Thanks!

I have taken so few pic this summer, and that sucks.

JUst got back from Northern Ontario to visit the inlaws. Nothing too great, but they do get a lot of humming bird action in their yard. What a challange they are to shoot.

Here are my best 3 of over 300 shots in 3 days:

Comments alway welcome!

Hovering Hummer

Zoomed in Hummer

Feeding Time

ETA: All were shot handheld with my 40D, and the 55-250 lens

Excellent shots! I've tried shooting humming birds before but haven't been able to get anything this nice.

Stunning shot!!!!

Any filters used? Can you post the exif data....

Beautiful!
Thanks for the kind words - appreciated much.Used a polarizer & tripod with the Sigma 10-20 and added just a little bit of blue to the sky using a gradient filter in post.

Otherwise just the typical post processing work for shooting in RAW - contrast, noise reduction and sharpening.

Exif :

PENTAX K20D, f/11 @ 20 mm, 0.7s, ISO 100, No Flash ...

Man I want that Sigma! I have rented the Canon 10-22, and loved it!!!

I have shot some sunsets like this, and sometimes, I have used a mauve filter with a polarizer.

Your shot are stunning though!!!!!

Looking forward to seeing more!

Had a GREAT vacation.. First time in 15 years of going to Canada that I didn't need a vacation from my vacation  Unfortunately came home to find my wife's computer infected with spybot, adware and viruses and my Computers Video Card "went to plaid" so haven't had a chance to review the :pics: I took yet.. :goodposting:

I would love some comments on a few shots I have taken in my small home studio. One strobe, one reflector

I am hoping to branch out a bit into some portrait stuff for friends/family

Thanks for looking

The one thing that really sticks out to me on these images is how soft you've made the light. This is something I struggle with when taking portraits and would love to know what you used to soften the light (softbox?, umbrella?). I don't know if I've ever captured images with such nice light. Very nicely done. About the only thing I would add is some kind of "separation light" to make the outline of the subjects more defined - but that's being nit-picky. Great job Parmcat!

Thank you so much.

I really do need a second light as the one I have with the reflector doesnt get the hairlight I need.

I have a nice softbox, but the softening is in post. I use NIK softward for the B&W conversion (Silver Efex Pro) and also use the tiffen program for other effects.

If you are looking foe strobes, check out Calumet Best prices BY far and rival the Alien Bees!

Thanks again for the kind words!

Hmm... kind of hard to comment on lighting without knowing how much was adjusted in post. Here's my take:I think "Rockin Dudes" would really benefit from less blur. To me, the image is way too soft and this conflicts with your concept. As for the lighting, I think your lamp is too close to the sunglasses kid; you're getting too hot on his face and sleeve. Pull it back or dial down the power if it's adjustable. Also, I'd suggest moving your light off to the side just a bit. I know you only have a single light here, but it looks to be almost straight-on the models so you're not really getting any definition and are flattening out their faces. I'd move the light off to a more 3/4 angle, maybe bounce some light from the other side as well.

On "Concentration", I think you just over-adjusted the levels to pull up the whites. You're blowing out the details of his face; his eyelashes and nostrils are too light (not black). The focus here is the boy's face, hands and guitar. It's OK to let his off-side fall back a bit. I did a quick adjustment of the levels in Photoshop and think it helps quite a bit. Feels more natural to me, less harsh like an interrogation room. Notice the difference in the darks of his eyelashes, nose and mouth. Letting the chair fall back in shadow puts focus back on his face and hands as well.

"Boy and Flower" is beautiful. The composition of his straight profile against the flat black background is really effective, love the play between the positive and negative space. Great work!

Wow...Thank you so much for the comments.

When I have a few more minutes I will recomment, but this is exactly what I was looking for. I have nver had anyone critique my portrait images, so this was very wanted.

Again, thanks for taking the time!
