Disney Vacation (5 Viewers)

Tip that some may not know: Fastpasses are good all day long. You don't have to return during the times listed on the ticket. You CAN'T go early, but you can go late right up until the park closes.Very possible to rack up pockets full of fastpasses in the day that you can use at night.
This used to be true, but as of early March Fastpasses DO expire.

Who's been to Kona Cafe? Thoughts?
At the risk of sounding sacrilegious I think it is as good as Ohana. Ohana is great but you better be hungry, VERY hungry and while the food is very good the menu is set. Kona's food is excellent and everyone can order what they want from a menu.I don't think you would be disappointed in either one.

Awesome. Booked a room and a dinner reservation there for May. :thumbup:Ohana had an open spot, but not till 9:50. Will try that sometime this year.

I have one more Disney trip to do and then done forever!!!!

Thinking November 2013. My daughter will be 8 and that should be it, unless she really wants to go again.

Maybe we'll actually plan for this one :)

If you like the wings at Ohana they are also available as an appetizer at Kona.

For those staying at the Polynesian, the room service menu is pretty much the same menu as Kona.

So is all the stuff done? I know they kept Goofy Barnstormers but pretty much redid everything else in that area

Dinner Reservations:

Sunday - nothing yet (maybe just do something casual that night since we'll be driving all morning and arriving early afternoon?)

Monday - Boma

Tuesday - Kona Cafe

Wednesday - Ohana (9:30, probably will change to something else, too late for the kids)

Thursday - Crystal Palace

Friday - Akershus

Thoughts? We won't due both Kona/Ohana, but I just made the reservations to get something on the schedule. Anything I should look for to add in place of one of Kona/Ohana?

Most of the Fantasyland expansion is not open and won't be open for a while.

I would go to Downtown Disney on Sunday. Lots of good places to choose from -- my personal favorite there is Ragland Road. If you want to eat on the cheap at Downtown Disney then go to the Earl of Sandwich. Not sure where you are going to be on Wednesday night but you might want to check out the California Grill (outstanding, expensive) or Chef Mickeys (character buffet) at the Contemporary or Whispering Canyon (BBQ) at the Wilderness Lodge.I also recommend the Sci Fi Dine-In Cafe for lunch when you go to Disney Hollywood Studios. The food is good if you stick to sandwiches and shakes and the atmosphere is really cool. The Sci-Fi is a must for us.

Seems a little light on Epcot dining. Depends on your park schedule though. What are your plans for each day?

There are some decent places at Downtown Disney that don't require a reservation, and qualify as "Quick Service" if you are doing the Dining Program. Here are a couple that we ate at, 3 little kids...

Wolfgang Puck® Express

Menu

Wolfgang Puck Café, a lively and casual restaurant open for lunch and dinner in Downtown Disney West Side, serves the famous chef's unique fusion of Asian and California cuisine.

Located on the ground floor, below the more formal Wolfgang Puck Café – The Dining Room, Wolfgang Puck Café offers a chic setting with more straightforward, though also very fresh, menu selections.

Signature dishes at Wolfgang Puck Café include vegetarian dishes, wood-fired gourmet pizzas, hand-tossed salads, piquant pastas, savory sandwiches and decadent desserts.

The sushi bar features tender fish creations prepared by talented sushi chefs. Try the Daily Sushi Special for a filling entrée that melts in your mouth. Order sushi from the bar or in the café itself.

For quick-service versions of Wolfgang Puck Café and The Dining Room, where you can find fresh and prepared-to-order breakfasts, lunches and dinners, check out:

Wolfgang Puck® Express in Downtown Disney West Side (located in the same building as Wolfgang Puck Café)

Wolfgang Puck® Express in Downtown Disney Marketplace (located near Disney's Days of Christmas store)

Cookes of Dublin

Menu

Rich in tradition, the Cooke family of Dublin has been serving hearty fresh fish battered in a secret family recipe for generations. Now is your opportunity to try it state-side, with a hearty helping of chips!

Located next to Raglan Road restaurant in Downtown Disney, Cookes of Dublin offers traditional Irish entrees in a quirky quick service format. Traditionalists will be interested in the popular Original One & One entree which is hand battered fresh fish and chips served with tartar sauce. Don't forget the unique Doh-bars, which are lightly battered and deep fried candy bars! Guests seeking healthier dining options are offered several salads and lighter side items. A limited amount of outdoor and indoor seating is available.

Traditional Irish fare; beef and lamb pie, chicken and field mushroom pie, smoked haddock pie, as well as battered fish & chips are featured. Battered chicken on skewers, Atlantic scallops, mini battered sausages, and side orders of chips are also available. Children have the choice of baby sausages and chips, fish & chips, or battered chicken with chips. Doh-bars, which are fried candy bars, are offered for dessert.

We ate at the Italian place next to Fultons at downtown Disney this past Thursday and I thought it was great. No one had a bad thing to say about it

It was the only place that we could be seated at the time we went so we took it.

Just Goofyband Dumbo are open. Peter Pan is awful for a 70 minute wait btw. We haven't waited more then ten minutes for anything this week. GB fastpasses.

Nope, we will be taking our two older girls, who will be 6 and almost 4.

We don't really have any at this point... :bag:Trip is late September. We were trying to arrange things to coordinate with the extra magic hours but we haven't really had time to really sit down and do all that. We just wanted to get our reservations in and try to get a couple character meals on the schedule. And Ohana, but that didn't work out well.

Ok, well that's kinda opposite of how I do it but could work. I like to decide where we'll be each day, and then make reservations that are conveniently located. Hopping around is an option though. Just less convenient imo. Also, are you locked into dinner always being your big meal? Sometimes a late long lunch is perfect for avoiding a portion of the most crowded time of the day. Having two young kids just adds to the appeal of a longer lunch break.

crap. That really sucks.

Well just wrapping up our Disney trip. Back from MK day two and leaving tomorrow. My two boys are wiped out. Still sleeping now an hour after they fell asleep on the boat ride back to the car. Very happy I stayed at Bonnet Creek and rented a car instead of Disney hotel. Will go into more details when I get back.

Any people with experience with the Disney cruise?Best place to purchase tickets?
Took a cruise on the Disney Wonder on it's second voyage in 1999. We had an awesome time though I imagine there have been quite a few changes since then.Check mousesavers.com for information on booking and getting the best discounts.

Well we are back from our Orlando trip. We were there for six days. Got there Friday had a family wedding Saturday. Monday we sat at the hotel pools noonday character breakfast at cape may and the back to hotel pools. Tues and Wed we went to Magic kingdom.

We stayed at the Wyndham grand bonnet creek. Bonnet creek is on Disney property but not owned by Disney (next to Carribean resorts). There are six time share towers, villas and the hot set up wrapped around a small lake. Across the street is the Hilton and Waldorf. Hotels are all brand new. I rented a minivan using my miles for the whole trip.

I loved the hotel and staying at non Disney place but still very close to parks. The room had two queens bunk beds and a crib. We were on a private access floor with a huge lounge that served light breakfast and afternoon snacks. Had a computer with printer and two big flat screen tvs. All for less than $200 a night and the sixth night was free. Great deal. Had a pool with two hot tubs and a tiki bar that served decent food right next to the pool. Plus you could use the pools in front of the other towers including two lazy rivers two slides and a sprinkler pool. Also free mini golf course. Lot if activites for kids daily. Very good seafood restaurant too. It was so nice to not have a crazy lobby or shortage of lounge chairs.

We went to cape may for character breakfast and I was a zoo. No thanks. And at $600 a night for an average room no way. Highly recommend bonnet creek. For more money and privacy the Hilton might be better. Rich couple with no little kids maybe the Waldorf. I have kids who are 6,4,1.

Rented the minivan and loved having my own car. In the MK parking lot in less than ten minutes. Kids got tired and we can just go no waiting for shuttles. Will do that again.

Don't think I would stay at Disney hotel over bonnet creek unless kids were older and could just go to the parks themselves using monorail or boat. Kids loved the hotel. Price was right.

We just got back too. Our Orlando nights, we stayed at the Caribe Cove resort in Kissimmee, which was a great deal through bookit.com at $65 a night. They had a cleaning fee and a resort fee that totaled an extra $100, but still cheap for a two bedroom condo. Not a lot to do at the resort, but a nice pool. It helped to stock up on breakfast food and snacks.

Disney Hollywood Studios one day, Magic Kingdom another. DHS was great for little kids (our girls are 4 and 6)....Ariel ride, Beuaty & the Beast show, Nick Jr show, Toy Story Mania, lots of Nick characters around. Only used Fastpass for Toy Story Mania. Longest wait all day was to meet Woody & Buzz; maybe 45 minutes. Hollywood & Vine buffet (not super impressed) and Fantasmic after dark. Loved Fantasmic....they say to get there an hour in advance but there were still empty seats as it started.

At MK, got there as it opened to do the carousel and Peter Pan and Dumbo before long lines formed. Was done with Fantasyland by 11:00. Only did Fastpass for Buzz Lightyear Space spin (didn't like as much as Toy Story mania, you can't see where you are shooting). Lunch in Cinderellas castle, which while overpriced of course, was great. A minute or two with 5 of the main princesses without having to wait in line was really nice. You get a small pciture package with it, which was a nice touch. People were trying to make same-day reservations for lunch....um, no. Longest lins again were to meet people...Tinkerbell and Rapunzel were like 45 minutes each. But, they loved getting autographs and talking to them so it was worth it. The 4 year old was a bit scared at Pirates of the Caribbean; I had remembered it as more 'funny', but it was a bit much for her age.

Overall, they liked the parades and character meet & greets at least as much as the rides. We were limited of course to what we could go on. We brought lots of snacks and books and stuff int the park to kill time in line, which was helpful. Had Giordanos' Pizza for the first time and may send them a plea to expand to Minnesota. Had a great time and will probably go again in a few years. Thanks for all of the advice in this thread.........

3hr

Someone mentioned fast passes being good all day. Unfortunately for those of us (guilty) who would hoard FPs for later in the day, this isn't the case anymore. In early March they started enforcing the FP window printed on the card. From what I have heard and read, you can arrive up to 5 minutes early and 10-15 minutes late and still get in. After that you will be turned away. If you are eating at a sit down restaurant and it causes you to miss your FP window, you need to let your server or someone know and I think they can give you a stamp on it or a different FP to use. I'm not all excited about the real FP policy actually being enforced but I get there next Saturday so I guess I will see how it goes then. Either way, I can't complain bc I will be in Disney!

FL or CA too? Disneyland in CA has always been lax about FP enforcement, would suck if they too started cracking down.

Just had to tell my fellow 'Ohana lovers I am currently sitting here waiting for banana fosters bread pudding...dinner was great like always! Have a view of the castle from our table and hope to catch Wishes during dessert.

I ate in Ohanas three times last week. We stayed at the Poly down at Tahiti. I liked the Garden Grille in Epcot better but Lilo and Stitch are our ****@*!

What is better for kids 5 and 2

HDDR or Mickeys Backyard BBQ

Thinking of trying to get

Oct 30- Dinner at Ohanas

Oct 31- Lilo and Sticth breakfast at Ohana

Nov 1- Dinner at Coral Reef, Mexican place, Lecelier OR HDDR vs Mickeys BBQ- Wife and I would love Lecelier but its about the kids (I think)

Nov 2- Luau at Poly for dinner

Nov 3- Breakfast at Hollywood and Vine

Nov 4- Cinderellas castle (Hate it plus its 2 points on plan but my daughter loves it)

Thanks. I think he will be OK with it. One moreHow far away is it? I assume there are busses that take you there.

Disney Cruises tend to be more expensive then your other lines, but worth it for the kids IMO. 1. you can bring as much alcohol as you want, so no extra cash on the booze if you don't need something fruity. 2. Kids are well entertained having an entire deck for them. You can leave them there with a monitor thingy to be able to see where they are at all times. 3. At dinner time, the kids get their meals while you get your appetizer, then the cruise kids team takes the kids so you can enjoy the rest of your dinner. 4. Shows are well done and Disney themed. 5. Disney has their own island for cruises. No pushy locals, separate place for adults only. Lots of activities, good BBQ for lunch.6. I find the food is better than the other cruise lines. Free walk up self served drinks.

You can take a bus to Ft. Wilderness or you can get there by boat from the MK, Contemporary, Polynesian or Grand FloridianETA: It is a little bit of a hike so give yourself a little time to get there.

Back from our trip. We had a blast, but I it's always an adventure when I go on vacation.

Day 1: We went to Hollywood Studios. Had breakfast with the characters and my son's shoe ended up in the scrambled eggs after wrestling with Handy Manny :bag: I started noticing a LOT of motorized carts and wheelchairs in the park. By the time we got to the Toy Story ride to get our FP, it was already at 2pm window. This was around 9:45 am. We went to the "Fantasmic" show which was pretty freakin' cool. Great end to the evening.

Day 2: We went to Magic Kingdom. We got there around noon and things were pretty congested, but not as bad as I had seen in the past. Dumbo ride was 2 hour wait. I apologize in advance for saying this, but that made ZERO sense to me. What's the attraction to that ride? We headed directly over to Tomorrow Land. Scared the poop out of my son with the Leo and Stich "ride", after grabbing a FP to Buzz. We hit several of the smaller rides like Tea Cups, go carts etc. Orbiter was a big hit with the little dude. We then made our way up to Small World, over to Haunted House (another big hit), Pirates of the Carribean etc. We were suppose to have dinner at the Crystal Palace, but apparently the kitchen blew up so all reservations were cancelled for that day. Fortunately, they made reservations for all their folks at Liberty Tree Tavern. I have to say, if you don't mind the set menu, it was awesome food wise. It was a family style place that had turkey, beef and pork, dressing, potatoes, mac and cheese, green beans, squash, gravy etc....all you can eat. Finished up dinner and walked outside to the second half of the light parade. By this time, little dude was passed out so we decided to skip the fireworks.

Day 3: Went to Epcot. Probably our son's favorite spot since he got to build all these things, make games etc. He'd have spent all day in the labs if we'd let him. Grabbed a FP to Soarin' but was left with a "meh" feeling of that experience. Nothing else had much of a wait at all. I think we did every single ride there and finished up the night with the laser show, which has been significantly scaled back from what they did 5-6 years ago. At this point in our adventure I was downright annoyed with all the scooters, wheelchairs etc. I'm confident 99% of the wheelchairs weren't needed. In most instances the wheelchair lines were longer than the regular lines, which I thought was funny :D

Day 4: Went to Animal Kingdom. We had a great time all around. Longest line in the park was at the water rapid ride. Mt Everest was never longer than 10 minutes and getting into the shows was no problem at all. The Lion King show was pretty cool. It was really amazing all the action/moving parts they put into that tiny little space. I wanted to start hitting people on the scooters with a stick, but there were none I could easily get my hands on.

Day 5: Went back to Magic Kingdom. We decided to go back. Got there early (just after gates open). We decided to ride the rides we didn't get to on Day 2. Got on Peter Pan and Whinnie the Poo. My son wanted to ride the roller coaster beside dumbo. We had all the rides completed by 1pm ish and went back to rides he liked the first time. Also were able to see the parade, light parade in full and fireworks. Decided to write a "suggestion" letter to Disney that they screen a little more closely who is allowed to have the scooters and who qualifies for a wheel chair.

:lmao: at scooters.

The bigger problem I have with wheelchair/scooters is that they get to just cut the line. I get that they have issues, most warranted, but the person who is with them and not disabled should get behind me in line and then when it's their turn, the scooter/wheelchair person can join them.

Epcot is fun if you know what to do. Shocked you though Soarin' was meh. It's my wife and daughter's favorite ride in WDW.

That "most" should be "few". I had a good amount of time on my hands standing in these lines, and MOST of them had not business being in the chairs at all. At least that I saw. I got so bitter by the end of the week, I pretty much decided unless you had fewer than two legs you shouldn't be able to be in one of these things. :P

I thought it was too short and I thought they missed some "action" opportunities. I was looking for some speed sequences and I thought I was going to get one when the fighter jets came into the picture, but that wasn't the case.

Soarin simulates a hang gliding experience. Going too fast wouldn't be very realistic.

I hear what you are saying and agree that a some of them may not be not warranted however you can't tell some disabilities just by outward appearances. If there are people that are capable of walking and standing in lines and they are too lazy and/or are doing it for shorter wait times then they better hope there is no such thing as karma.

From what I've heard, it's one of the slowest rides in terms of the numbers of people that fit on the ride, how long it takes to load, and how long the ride is.

For instance, the magic carpet ride is practically the same thing as the dumbo ride, but each "bucket" has two benches, so it has double the capacity.

Peter Pan is slow too. That's why the "ideal" way to hit those two rides is to get there when it opens, and go to those two first.

Epcot is fun if you know what to do. Shocked you though Soarin' was meh. It's my wife and daughter's favorite ride in WDW.
I thought it was too short and I thought they missed some "action" opportunities. I was looking for some speed sequences and I thought I was going to get one when the fighter jets came into the picture, but that wasn't the case.
I agree. I wasn't blown away by Soarin, as everyone said I would be. Kind of seemed like the type of ride you'd get in the mall in one of those virtual reality booths.

Soarin simulates a hang gliding experience. Going too fast wouldn't be very realistic.
Yeah, in hindsight, I should have read the brochure, but they were selling it as this "flying experience". Fortunately, it was a FP stop and not much of a wait at all.

:lmao: at scooters.

The bigger problem I have with wheelchair/scooters is that they get to just cut the line. I get that they have issues, most warranted, but the person who is with them and not disabled should get behind me in line and then when it's their turn, the scooter/wheelchair person can join them.
I hear what you are saying and agree that a some of them may not be not warranted however you can't tell some disabilities just by outward appearances. If there are people that are capable of walking and standing in lines and they are too lazy and/or are doing it for shorter wait times then they better hope there is no such thing as karma.
I know. That's why I chuckled each time the "short" line was longer than the regular line...karma and all.

There are several rides of the Dumbo concept, but only Dumbo will have a 2 hour wait. It doesn't make sense to me. That's all.
