Disney Vacation (7 Viewers)

Crap, I hate barbecue.
Boo this man.  Although I will say it will probably be average BBQ at best and way overpriced.  We will probably hit it up once it opens just because we love TS.

Are they planning to reopen Pizza Planet in TS Land now that it’s open?  Seems like a no-brainer as long as they improve the pizza - it was craptastic.

Thanks - we’ve been around Disney Springs several time but always more to explore or redo - thanks for the suggestions.  Any breakfast recommendation?  Even if it’s - “hey, the breakfast sandwich at resort X is pretty awesome” - I don’t really want to do Whispering Canyon again.
My favorite resort breakfast is 1900 Park Fare at the Grand Flo. Nothing particularly amazing about the food, but the resort is great to be in and there are face charachters are good (family is getting too old for just non-speaking costumed characters).

One I have not tried it yet, but want to, is the Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast at Trattoria al Forno at the Boardwalk. Its all princess AND their partners, so you have Rapunzel and Flinn, Ariel and Prince Eric, etc. It's not buffet or family style, its order per plate, but the menu is very oddly italian, like this: Calzone with Scrambled Eggs, Bell Peppers, Salumi, Bacon, Sausage, Blend of Cheeses, and Sunday Gravy. IDK, but its different.

Besides that, for non-character meals, Kona Cafe at the Polly is good  (Tonga toast for the WIN!), if you are adventurous try Boma at AKL (and check out the animals as mentioned before).

Kona cafe is my favorite restaurant at Disney.  Breakfast is killer.  Ohana has a solid breakfast too.  Chef Mickey's breakfast has the best atmosphere probably.

agreed, but I left it off b/c its a bit chaotic and all costumed/masked characters which are great but lack real interaction. Plus its hella hard to get into unless you are booking 180 days out. Still one of our family's favorites and is our "Last breakfast" tradition.

Bonus points for Kona is that that they can serve you the Ohana bread pudding if you ask for it.

I am jonesing for a trip.  Was set up to go last summer but a bunch of my deals blew up.  Fingers crossed for this summer.

Same.  As much as I hate on some things they do I'm itching to go back.  this is the first time in probably 5 years I don't have a trip planned.  I started looking at late summer deals yesterday.  Just to go and kick back.

I do think I'll have the opportunity to make it to DL this September.   And I think its gonna be just me and the Mrs.

My kids are 13 and 10.  Another reason I want to go now.

Is it too late to plane a Disney trip in late June?  I hear a lot of horror stories about not booking rooms or reserving restaurants way in advance.

Depends on how upset you will be if you dont get to eat where you want, or if you dont get to fastpass certain rides that are popular.

no, you can book one, just be realistic on a few things.

If you want to stay on property, then as long as you are booking at least 60 days out, you should be fine. Rooms should be available in all categories, and there are discounts gonig on. I posted them about a week or so ago, let me look.

the 60 day mark i mention is that's when you can begin booking your FastPasses. FPs are ride reservation that get you through a special line at a selected time of day for each specific attraction you hold a FP for.  Everyone gets 3 per day and once they are used, you can get a 4th, then 5th, etc. Rides do 'sell out' of FPs that's why the 60-day window is important. On-site guests get to select there on 60 days out, whereas locals and of -site guests cab claim them at 30 days out. I guess late June is inside of 60 days but till not 30 so you still have a shot at decent availability. Google Disney's FastPass for a full explanation of how it works.

If you are looking to stay off site, then book it before 30 days or else you will kinda screw yourself with FPs.

It is possible to do the parks with no, or average FP experiences, just accept that you'll be spending more time in line on the major attractions.

As for dining, people can start booking their dining 180 days away, i know its a while. So popular restaurants do fill up and it is hard to get a table. But there are a bunch of restaurants on property and people hoard and then cancel reservations all the time, so it helps to keep checking. You can move or cancel reservations up to 24 hours before. Also, there is really good dining at Disney Springs—which is kind of like a bar and shopping district at WDW—really good ones. And most of them are not owned by Disney. So what that means is that they have some of their tables set aside for the WDW reservation system, and another set that they keep open for locals and sites like Open Table. So if you cant get a reservation through WDW's site, try calling the location directly or check open table.

But sit down dining is not the only place to eat a meal...there are lots of good counter service locations (walk up dining) within the parks and they will not take an hour+ of your park time. Its all in how you want to experience the parks.

Lots of booking offers dropped today:

Annual Passholders: save up to 35% on rooms at pretty much all resorts for stays most nights July 1 through August 28, 2019

Gift card promo: guests can receive a digital Disney gift card loaded with varying amounts, depending on their resort type and length of stay.

Save up to 25% on rooms at select Disney Resort hotels, valid for stays most nights May 28 through August 28, 2019 when you book through August 28, 2019.

When you book this offer for arrivals May 28 to June 30, 2019, you’ll receive a Disney Gift Card at check-in—The value of your Disney Gift Card will vary based on Resort Category and original length of stay:

Disney Deluxe Villa Resorts: $25 per room per night
Disney Deluxe Resorts: $20 per room per night
Disney Moderate Resorts: $15 per room per night
Disney Value Resorts: $10 per room per night

Free QS Meal: guests booking vacations between May 28 through August 21, 2019 are eligible for the offer when purchasing a vacation package that includes a room for 4-nights at a select Disney Moderate or Vaule Resort Hotel and a 5-day theme park ticket.

With this offer, each member of your party (ages 3 and up) can enjoy one quick-service meal per night of your stay.  This does not include a refillable mug.

• Each quick-service meal includes: 1 entrée, 1 non-alcoholic beverage—or 1 alcoholic beverage for Guests ages 21 and older (must present valid ID to be served alcoholic beverages)
• Offer excludes Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter, Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort and The Little Mermaid Standard Rooms at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort.
• Children ages 3 to 9 must choose from the children’s menu, if available. (Interesting b/c normally there are no designation on QS credits, kids can order adult meals)

Is attendance really that far down this summer?
@Arizona Ronthis is the post I mentioned. Good deals to be had...i really like the gift card one and it seems to fit your timeline, but if you are staying at a value or moderate, the QS (Quick Service/Counter service) meal option might be better b/c the average cost of a QS meal is about $14/pp. However, it seems the gift card one comes with a room discount too, so you should figure the value of that in as well.

Last time we did it, a company paid for the entire trip and we even had a guide to handle the fast pass and direct us where to go.  They also booked us 8 months out.

I've never done it on my own.  I might call a travel agency, it seems like too much.

If you aren’t interested in the details of doing it I would definitely call a travel agent.

When does the resort pool access fee go in effect?   Will it be an hourly rate, or daily charge?

Extra, Extra Magic Hours for WDW theme parks in September and October that includes SWGE

.....this fall, guests of Disney Resort hotels and other select hotels will have more opportunities to take advantage of the Extra Magic Hours benefit with Extra, Extra Magic Hours for a limited time at our theme parks!

The Extra, Extra Magic Hours benefit will include Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, as well as other experiences at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom theme parks.  Here’s the rundown:

Disney’s Hollywood Studios — Daily from Sept. 1-Nov. 2, the park will have Extra, Extra Magic Hours from 6-9 a.m., including Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, plus Toy Story Land attractions and select other attractions. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and its experiences subject to capacity.

(Please note that on Aug. 29-31, Disney’s Hollywood Studios will open at 6 a.m. for all guests. There will not be Extra, Extra Magic Hours on those days.)

Disney’s Animal Kingdom – Extra, Extra Magic Hours will happen daily Aug. 29-Nov. 2, from 7-8 a.m., featuring Pandora – The World of Avatar and other attractions throughout the park (same as today’s morning Extra Magic Hours offerings).

Magic Kingdom Park —Extra, Extra Magic Hours will happen daily from Aug. 29-Nov. 2, from 7-8 a.m., featuring favorite attractions in Fantasyland and Tomorrowland (same as today’s morning EMH offerings).

Extra Magic Hours will also continue to be available on select days at Epcot.

The Magic Bands you get with your reservation will soon get plussed (for a cost). Now, in addition to the main single colored bands you get to select from, you can upgrade your MB to a character designed one for $14.99 off the regular price. That puts most bands in the $10 upgrade range. There are over 30 designs to choose from and if you order them 11 day before arrival, then you can have them shipped to your house as normal, or have them shipped to the resort within 6 days of arrival.

I don't love upcharges, but this is one I could live with as i'm getting sick of the single color bands. I think a have multiple of every color (except pink man!)

According to this blog

UPDATE: According to Disney, the MagicBands will be available for purchase starting on May 15, 2019. Guests will be expected to pay $14.99 for each upgraded MagicBand at the time of selection. Upgraded MagicBands are non-returnable and non-refundable. This includes guests who have canceled their reservations. In addition, if a reservation is canceled, guests will be charged the full price (not the $14.99 discounted) rate for the MagicBands.
@doowain FYI, still unconfirmed, but promising.

What is "soon"?  Any idea?

Ended up doing Kona and then Trattoria al Forno's princess breakfast.  Kona was delicious as always and this may be blasphemy but I think macadamia nut-pineapple pancakes may be as good or better than Tonga Toast.  Trattoria was good but what you'd expect - you are paying for the princesses (Ariel and Rapunzel) - I love the Boardwalk/Beach Club/Yacht Club area - just gorgeous and great place to take photos.  It's worth doing if you have a kid that loves Little Mermaid or Tangled.  We actually found the princes (Eric and Flynn) more engaging than the princesses.  My niece was blown away when Prince Eric knew her name.  I was :lmao: at her reaction.  I ordered the Royal Breakfast - Oak-grilled Steak,Asparagus, Cheesy-Egg Torte, Fonduta, Breakfast Potatoes, Crispy Onions.  Was pretty good and a generous portion.

We also did dinner at Maria & Enzo's at Disney Springs - really enjoyed this meal and huge shareable portions.

awesome to hear.

Does Beaches and Cream take reservations?  Was thinking of taking the kids to do the kitchen sink on their last day of school.  Every time I pick a date/time on the site, there is nothing available....even months from now :oldunsure:

when were you thinking of going?

Yes they do take reservations but it is very small, maybe 10-12 tables at most. So it does fill up very quickly. Also, it will be closing for 3 months starting in August. Nothing official, but it seems like they are taking over part of the arcade space next door and enlarging the entire restaurant.

There is still the walk up bar, you cant get the famous kitchen sink, but you can get a smaller modified version that gives you a plastic Mickey sink-shaped bowl to take home

End of this month...maybe the first week of June.

Even though we obviously did dining at Disney we spent 2 days at Universal parks.  I talked some about Universal previously but wanted to add some additional thoughts.

  • I'm still kind of blown away by the idea that Universal is a big roller coaster haven - there's basically just 1 roller coaster at Studios and 1 big one and the small Hippogriff coaster at IOA.  Maybe I misunderstood when people were describing it but I assumed there would be several coasters per park.  The 4D rides are fun but not the same to me as a roller coaster
  • Shrek 4D movie is better than any of the Disney ones and I'm a fan of all them.
  • The 4D rides are cool but I don't know if it's my age or just not being used to them but if I do too many in a short time I get a little off kilter - my favorite one is The Simpson's ride - great pre-show and ride.
  • I think the theming of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is easily the best themed area in all the Orlando theme parks.  I'm curious to see if Star Wars land does it as well
  • It's almost comical how old and outdated ET is - I get for those who have gone for years there's some nostalgia going on and as an older guy it definitely brought back some fond memories of watching it as a kid but it's remarkable how they keep it around.
Ultimately for me there's really no comparison between the two resorts overall - not that we haven't enjoyed Universal but it's easy to see why a Disney season pass is 3 times more.  I'd pay double what I paid for Universal pass for any 2 Disney World resort parks.

Keep checking. I was able to switch mine from 5ish to 3:30 by checking a lot. Early dinner/late lunch seemed easier to snag. But they dont have a ton of room like glv said

I've had mixed success with this free service. You need to jump on the ADR as soon as it comes through, but at least its someone looking out for you vs trying to check every few hours yourself. Again, B&C is small and popular, so it will be tough to grab, but its worth a shot.

Thanks gentlemen!  I'll give this a whirl and see what comes of it.

Excellent.  Thanks for the update!

well it was announced to date that the movie series no one wants any sequels to will be in our lives for the next 10 years

James Cameron’s AVATAR

Get ready folks because starting on December 17th, 2021 with AVATAR 2 and every Christmas for the next decade, we’ll be making our return to Pandora. The final AVATAR film is set for 2027.

also announced:

Star Wars: Following The Rise of Skywalker coming out this December, Disney has made it official that we’ll be returning to a galaxy far, far away in 2022. Disney made it clear that this will be the kickoff of a new trilogy which will be released before Christmas every other year beginning in 2022.

Marvel: We already knew we had a standalone Black Widow movie, an adaptation of the Eternals, a Shang-Chi movie, Black Panther 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 on the way. With two movies slated for a 2020 release, Marvel has confirmed some additional untitled films planned for both 2021 and 2022.

Disney Live-Action: Lion King and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil are both slated for a 2019 release, we also have confirmation of Mulan which is slated to hit theaters on March 27th, 2020. Additionally, Cruella is slated for a December 23rd, 2020 release and eight additional untitled live-action films sprinkled throughout 2021 and 2022.

Indiana Jones: Disney has an official release date for Indiana Jones 5 which is slated to hit theaters on July 9th, 2021 after missing its 2019 release.

X-Men: The New Mutants featuring Maisie Williams from Game of Thrones is schedule to hit theaters on April 3rd, 2020 pending no delays.

I wonder what happens to the planned live-action films if Aladdin bombs (as is my current prediction)?  Would a big ticket flop slow that genre down?

Are there more planned?  I thought they were pretty much done and set to release?  It makes no sense cause there really, unless its just Disney trying to keep "new" movies at the box office.

I wonder what happens to the planned live-action films if Aladdin bombs (as is my current prediction)?  Would a big ticket flop slow that genre down?
it won't....it didn't stop at BEauty and the Beast, It didn't stop at Marry Poppins or Christopher Robin, or any of the Tim Burton Dumbos or Alice in Wonderlands....and it ain't gonna stop now.

I actually don't expect Aladdin to flop. I think it will be a pretty good movie (compared to the rest). And then Lion King is right behind it. 2 movies that also made for successful Broadway adaptions. After that, I'm not seeing much interest or excitement, but I think these 2 will do alright.

Ill say this about the live action movies. I have enjoyed them. But Cinderella wasn’t all that great. It was almost like a Disney channel movie. Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book were exceptional. Very excited for Lion King and I am sure we will see Aladdin

Lol that movie is not flopping. Every kid that grew up in the late 80s/early 90s is going to see it.
That’s me and it looks pedestrian.  Since it is my username, I’ll be that one guy and openly admit to being fully opposed to the so far seen footage of Will Smith as genie.  He’s admittedly up against the wall attempting to step in for Robin Williams and I think the live action aspect of it hurts; Will Smith to me is now on the level of Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey, practically the same guy in every different character.  As though they should be billed Adam Sandler as himself in the credits.

Anyway, tangent over.  I don’t have any actual numbers regarding the success of the live action movies.  They must be doing well enough to keep making them.

To actual Disney parks, I lucked into FPs for the safari, Everest, and the dinosaur ride at AK this morning/afternoon.  AK is easily my new favorite park to just wander with no real agenda

No way Aladdin bombs.  Will Smith looks great in the role.

However, I don't see the need to do a "live action" Lion King.

I hear ya, I think it can go one way or another very easily. But for me, I have faith in the story and think it will be good. I'm hot and cold on WS, IMO I would have tried to get the guy who did Genie in Broadway, but not sure if that was explored. WS brings the star power needed to drag the average everyday moviegoer. I know it will be hard, but I think I need to leave any memory of Robin's Genie at the door and understand that it was the original and was great, I can't judge this one based on the original, it can't compare.

The live-action have not done fantastic at the box office, at least domestically, but what they are is generally cheap to produce, and the story is proven. that's my problem with them is that it is just rehashes. From a studio that made its bones on original, fantastic storytelling,  and surprising us (the audience), it just comes off as lazy and uninspired, and just produced to make a buck. But I also blame the general public, for as much as the ##### and complain, entertainment companies have found its safer to reproduce the same story and have it mildly succeed, rather than spend the time creating something new and risking failure. And its trickled down to the theme parks. Unless we get some really new creative leadership, we wil lnot see another Haunted Mansion or Expedition Everest. Unless it is tied to an IP, its not getting green lit in the parks.

tangent over as well.

AK is a really great park that many under appreciate.

Odd question:  anyone know if the boats at Disney Springs have a drop off at/walking distance to the LBV golf course?
I found this:

Travel Directions: Complimentary taxi vouchers (through Yellow Cab) are provided for Walt Disney World Resort guests who are going to play golf at one of Disney's golf courses. The Valet desk or Bell Services will call a cab for Guests. The Pro Shop at the golf course will assist guests in returning to their resort. The Lake Buena Vista golf course is located near the Downtown Disney Marketplace and within the grounds of Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort. Exit I-4 onto 535. Turn left onto Hotel Plaza Boulevard. At the end of Hotel Plaza Boulevard (the Marketplace will be in front of you), turn right and follow the signs to the course.

From what I gather, the clubhouse is a short walk from the main Saratoga Springs Main building, and it looks like there is a boat dock at SSR. So i think you should be covered. But always best to check at the resort before going anywhere.
