Disney Vacation (2 Viewers)

Are you on a budget or no?

The Grand Californian is awesome. You have your own entrance to CA (by the water rapid ride) or it spits you out directly into Downtown Disney. But, you pay for that. My wife says next time we go, we are staying there. No complaints from me

We stayed off site in January and would enter thru Grand Californian. However, we were not supposed to. On our third day, we were stopped. Went to the front gate and said we had reservations for breakfast. The group behind us wasnt as smart and were turned away.

We stayed at Paradise Pier and enjoyed it. Wasnt anything great. Think between value moderate. Paradise Pier is very close as well but you have to walk thru Downtown Disney.

I can not comment on Disneyland hotel since I havent stayed there or even seen it on my walks.
We just spent 5 nights at the Disneyland hotel. It qualifies as the moderate resort at Disneyland. There isn't much theming there, which seems to be the biggest complaint that people have about it. It's closer to the parks than Paradise Pier but not as close as the Grand Californian. Still a very easy walk to the parks through Downtown Disney, since the hotel is basically across a driveway from the west entrance to Downtown Disney. We stayed in a room on the 8th floor of the tower closest to Downtown Disney and our room faced the parks. As a result we could watch the fireworks from our room each night. The room was nice with plenty of space for just two of us. It was kind of cool while we were there so we didn't spend any time at the pools. They have a character breakfast and dinner at one of the resort's restaurants, which is expensive but wasn't very crowded, so we had a great time interacting with the characters. It also has a very nice steakhouse restaurant and a fun bar. My only complaint was that I wasn't a fan of the quick service restaurant.

My reason for staying at the Disneyland hotel instead of the Grand Californian was that we could get an upgraded room there for the same cost as a standard room at the GC and it was no more than an additional 5 minute walk to get to the parks.

News out of Epcot.

CMs were told today that many of the locations around Space Ship Earth will close on Sept 7th. Slated for demolition are the Character spots, Starbucks, Club Cool 😰, the Camera Center, and Colortopia. Electric Umbrella and Mouse Gear will not be effected (yet).

Starbucks and Character spot will move to temporary locations.

That area is being completely reimagined as part of the Epcot revitalization project, called Project Gamma, and will include a 2 1/2 year refurb of Space Ship Earth.

On a lighter note: The classic Rainbow Tunnel from the old Imagination pavilion has been taken out of storage and temporarily set up inside the Odyssey for the time being.

Does a refurb of Spaceship Earth include changing out the scenes on the inside?
yes, they are shutting it down for the whole 2.5 years. New/updated show scenes and new narration.

Anyone care to guess who it will be?

I'm saying Mike Rowe. (nothing announced yet, this is just for fun and pure speculation)

go....

So we get extreme weather alerts.

Traffic accident alerts.

Tornado alerts.

Hurricane alerts.

All the good keep us safe stuff.

Why cant we have Brazilian cheerleader groups alerts? Like "Alert: teenage Brazilian groups will be in EPCOT and Magic Kingdom today. Adjust travel plans accordingly."

Kthanksbye.

Yes/no Im on a budget. I know that makes little sense. Honestly we shouldn't be going at all but I think this may be the last vacation with my two youngest kids. I have four kids, two who are older and gone. The two left are 17 and 14. The 17 year old is a senior and will be leaving for college after next year. So Im sort of doing a last hurrah with the two youngest. After that it will just be the one. I am feeling sad about that but at the same time I am happy that the kids are growing and doing well. Anyway this boils down to I will be the dummy who spends to much for one last memory with two kids.

Some more updates on this:

Character Greetings:
• Minnie Mouse will move into the World Showcase Gazebo.
• Daisy Duck will move to The American Adventure.
• While new locations are being developed for Mickey Mouse and Goofy, they will temporarily appear in Innoventions West.
• In the “near future”, Mickey Mouse will move to an all-new location in the Imagination! Pavilion.
• Goofy will venture out into the park—and soon will find a new TBA.
• Joy will move soon too, to a location TBA.
• Winnie the Pooh will return to the United Kingdom pavilion, greeting guests at Christopher Robin’s bedroom beginning in September 2019.
• Baymax will no longer be greeting guests after his meet and greet closes later this year.

The Electric Umbrella QS location will officially close this winter for a full refurbishment. The last day listed with operating hours is currently November 23rd, 2019.

Starbucks will be moving to the Odyssey temporarily

The Art of Disney store will operate from a temporary location while the work is underway before moving on to Heritage Manor at The American Adventure, which is slated to become the new, permanent home for Art of Disney offerings.

MouseGear is set to close for an extensive remodeling before the end of the year. It will be moving to a temporary home over the winter during the refurbishment of the retail location. An official closing date for the refurbishment has yet to be announced.

And finally....Club Cool is set to return, eventually, incorporated into a new space in the near future.

Epcot is going to be an interesting place for the next 2-3 years.

You guys who CHOSE to come here this week are nuts :lmao:

If things go as planned, we will be experiencing record highs on the fourth.
Um.... I will be watching the Yankees live in a dome, with AC, with about 432 other people thank you very much.

I was on a Disney Cruise last week and added on a few days at Disney, but keeping it low key with the heat. Did Typhoon Lagoon with a cabana yesterday; pricey, but worth it.

Staying at the Polynesian and watched the fireworks from the beach. Pretty good show from there.

Doing the Lilo and Stitch breakfast this morning.

how was the weather last night? I saw some stuff on FB that looked like they had to shut the beach down for a bit and move everyone inside?

Sometimes you just gotta keep your hands off stuff.

UP! A Great Bird Adventure show at Animal kingdom (which replaced the show Flights of Wonder) debut to very lackluster results and has already been rewritten once. But it looks like it's going back under the knife for some more reimagining, as it will close in early September for about a week from Sept 8-14th.

I really hope they learned their lesson, but I doubt it.

No problem at the beach. I’m not sure if there was earlier. I got to the beach around 8:30 or so. Weather held out great. Got some good pictures.

We were put undercover at Typhoon Lagoon and rides were closed for a period of time yesterday afternoon. Cabana came in handy for that, and had a drink while waiting for the all clear.

My first time staying at the Polynesian, but this may be my new favorite place to stay. Fireworks were great to see from the resort. Just had a Dole whip downstairs. Breakfast at Ohana was great. Also did the fire show here for dinner a couple of nights ago. We were in the mood for a lazy day, so just took my son around on the monorail and a boat ride around the lagoon. Pretty convenient place to stay.

At the airport on my way home. Had dinner last night at the California Grill at the top of the Contemporary. Another great spot — good location for viewing fireworks.

I will post a Disney cruise report, if folks are interested in that, when have some time. I did a 5 day cruise on the Disney Dream, departing from Port Canaveral, with stops in Nassau and Castaway Cay in the Bahamas.

My favorite restaurant on property by far.

My only complaint with California Grill is that I ordered a steak medium rare, but it came out well done and gray throughout, including the center.  I don’t like to send back food, but, for as much as I was spending and how off it was from what I ordered, I did last night.  They were pretty good about it, and had a new steak out in a few minutes though — maybe over-corrected a bit, as it was a bit too far on the rare side, but close enough and I’ll take rare over a well done steak.

Let me give you my Acer shark move

We were going towards the end of July last year. I called in February to book a cabana.

When we got there, the cabana rental line was huge. Someone helps us and tells us that we were upgraded for free. We booked so early and they were sold out. It was like booking a room for a cruise. Or at least how it used to be.

Book early and hope people arent as smart as you and you will be upgraded. And the upgrade was a HUGE difference. Plus, like Don, it rained on us and we had this huge space to hang out and not get wet.

I spend the money on cabanas whenever I attend a water park.

Did you bring a tripod or just rest it on a ledge?

Did you bring a tripod or just rest it on a ledge?
I did not bring a tripod with me, and did not have ledge where I was sitting. Set it to manual mode with the shutter speed at 1/10th and ISO of 200, and played around with f-stop until I found what worked.

I did not take any of the cabana, but if you search for “Typhoon Lagoon Beachcomber Shack” you can find some pictures. I think it was around $500 total, but split cost with my in-laws. Definitely a steep splurge, but came in handy with the heat and the rain. Like Acer said, I would book in advance — I think my wife booked it about six months out.

You can probably chance it on finding some chairs in the shade, but I think they go pretty fast in the morning.

That is impressive to get the water flowing at such a slow shutter speed. Nice work

Got a handful of likes; so, I’ll take that as interest in a Disney cruise report.

Cruise left from Port Canaveral.  We took a day before the cruise to tour the Kennedy Space Center.  I visited there back when I was a kid 20-25 years ago; obviously, a lot of changes since then (such as Space Shuttle Atlantis).  Flew into Orlando and stayed at a Residence Inn near Port Canaveral.  My wife discovered in research that the hotel shares a parking lot with a Hertz. So, we were able to drop off the rental car there, and then Hertz gave us a complimentary shuttle ride to the cruise ship.  If we did not do the KSC, we could have taken a Disney shuttle bus over there.

The day of cruise departure, we got on the ship around 11am or so.  We spent much of the first day by the pool and getting the layout of the ship.  We also visited the “Oceaneer’s Club” which has a bunch of activities for tykes — it is a kiddie day care type place where you can drop off your kids.  We found my son a bit too young for it though.  He just turned 3, but activities/oversight were geared a bit more for a couple years older (the kids there range from 3-12, so he’s at the very low end).  They have a toddler area for younger kids, but he was too old for that.  I think he would have gotten more use out of the club if we did the cruise in another year or two (he has some slightly older cousins who were in there a lot, which their parents took full advantage of to do their own thing).

They have a launch party with characters — characters are always around the ship for pictures, and the cruise app can tell you when/where.  Woke up the next day in Nassau.  We did an excursion to Ardastra Gardens & Zoo — saw a marching flamingo show and fed some parrots — which was combined with a city tour.  They also had some excursions over to the Atlantis resort, and the straw market is not far from the port, but we skipped that.

We then spent two days in Castaway Cay, which is a private island in the Bahamas owned by Disney.  They have family and adult beach sections.  Also a kids’ club area on the island.  Lots of equipment for rentals, such as bikes and snorkeling equipment; they also offer parasailing.  We spent the bulk of our time on the family beach — nice place and did not feel too crowded.  Felt more like a pool, which I appreciated because the actual ocean scares me with the little one and the threat of riptides.  The time of year was not in our favor as it was blistering hot with a heat index around 105 both days (even the water was too warm to be refreshing).  If I did again, I’d want to go in later winter/early spring, as I found it too hot to really enjoy too much; I wouldn’t have minded biking, but too hot for that (timing was driven by in-laws who were celebrating a milestone anniversary).

Leaving Castaway Cay was “pirate night” where everyone dresses up like a pirate and there is a fireworks show.  Last full day was a day at sea.  Theatre on the ship was showing some newer Disney movies — we watched Toy Story 4.  They also offered a live production of Beauty & The Beast.  The new Avengers was also showing.

I wish I could have partaken in some of the other ship activities that require registration, but they were all filled up before it was open to us for signing up.  They give preferred access based on number of Disney cruises that you have been on.  I was interested in a Mixology class and a Martini class, but they were already filled up, even though we looked into them as soon as it opened up to us.  On the first day of the cruise, my FIL stood in line at Guest Services for an hour to get on the waitlist for the martini class, and was able to get into it when a spot opened up, but I didn’t get time to stand in line for that. I think the people with seniority just book it to reserve a spot, and then drop out before the deadline to do so, if they decide to something else.

Ship has some other activities like the Aquaduck water slide, and a sports deck where I played some mini golf with my son (who somehow got a hole-in-one before me).  Restaurants were solid, but nothing special (about what I expect on a cruise ship) — lots of Mickey waffles and Mickey ice creams for the little ones.  Animator’s Palate was pretty cool — there was a large screen TV by our table and “Crush” the turtle from Finding Nemo came by on the screen and talked to the kids.  Also pretty good with food allergies, if that is important to anyone.

I’ve probably rambled enough. If you are into cruising and have some small ones, definitely a good route to go.  I’m not much of a cruiser (or beach/pool person) and prefer more active vacations (my only other cruise experience was a pre-kid Alaska cruise, which is a bit different from this kind of cruise).  I could see myself doing another Disney cruise in a couple of years when my son could enjoy the kids’ club a bit more, but I may look into a different location.

ETA: If I could change one thing, it would probably be a separate kids club for kids between, e.g., 3-6 to separate them out from the 7-12 year olds. It is a nice amenity, but too intimidating to throw a 3 year old in the same room to compete for the same toys/attention as a 10-12 year old.

I’ve said this before in here but will say it again. We had an absolute blast on our Disney cruise. However, I have been on Carnival, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean and I can not justify Disney doubling their price vs the other guys. Was it great, yes. Was it doubly great for the price, no way.

I haven’t been on the others to compare, but I can see that if the price is that much more than others. Nothing felt too special about it relative to, for example, the Holland America ship that I was on in Alaska.

We were at Hershey Park for my daughters tournament a few weeks back. We went to a water park in ocmd this past week. Add in Great Adventure and Busch Gardens which we have been to recently and I have zero issues spending extra money to go to Disney. They just do everything right in their parks. My wife and I are always saying how well Disney runs compared to other places.

We didn’t say that on the cruise. I’m sure we will go on one again since my daughter just brought it up. But your point is well taken.

I just read that they are running of out kyber crystals. How on earth can that happen.

We've been to basically every amusement park on the east coast with the only exception being Universal down here. I'll take Disney on its worst day over every other place we have been on their best.  Not even a thought or debate.

I've only seen the video, but the old show was so much better IMO. It had a story and a joke character (Guano Joe) along with the bird training taking center stage.
I'm not an anti-IP guy, but its touch to show emotion, surprise and joke in a character suit where there is not way to show emotion through the mask. Thats where it looses it for me at least. I'll see it in person in a few days.

@AcerFC @Yankee23Fan Theme park to theme park, I agree. Hands down. I was referring to the drastic cost difference and rabid popularity of a Disney Cruise and every other cruise line out there. I've been on most of the major ones, just not Disney yet. I want to go, but the cost puts it really far away for what I can do right now.

I've heard reviews that range from "OMG sink any other cruise ship thats not disney right now!!" to "meh it was good, but IDK what you are paying for?"  The cost is hard sell for some with a many similar base products out there.

funny Hershey Park story. Last October we went to WDW for our fist Halloween party. Anyone who has gone to one knows the insane amount of candy they throw at you there.

A few weeks after we went to HP for my son's hockey tournament, basically the weekend before halloween. The park was open for their special Halloween party, so we expected pretty much the same deal. We got to the one (and only) trick or treat station, and the worker out front goes, "you need to have your hand stamped"

me: "Huh? Ok" I go to stick my hand out and he's like, "No, just the kids".

So I'm no rocket scientist, but pretty cut if you are getting a hand stamp, its to let them know that you went though already. And i'm sure if its 'only the kids' that they aint giving anything to the adults.

So we go in and they are literally putting one piece of snack sized chocolate bars in the kids bag...one! like between their thumb and forefinger like "here you go...next..."

One of the moms on my kids team went the lady giving out a certain candy and was like "wow, I have not had one of those in years...can I have one please?" only to be told 'no...Its just for the kids'

Huh??? I mean this place is literally MADE OF CHOCOLATE???  I was really taken back.

So yea, thats the difference between WDW and many other parks. I get it.

ok, this is really tough watch, but its Disney so here goes.

Some family got into a huge brawl with each other at DL's ToonTown today. Seriously, language, fighting, woman beating, craziness, violence, did I say woman beating? Holy cow! This is insane

Not for the faint of heart. You've been warned

I thought there were like 5000 cops and security personnel at these parks? Where the #### were they?

What the mother ####

So Im piecing together that they all know each other. Red shirt maniac and big girl are brother-sister?

Then he unloads on his girlfriend and instead of running so fast to get away, sue sticks around

Why was he not in cuffs immediately. They let him walk back over to her.

Ugh. So much wrong with that whole thing. I wonder how people get that way. I am so sheltered in my suburban NY environment.

Switching gears: the 'Twilight Feast' has apparently been around for a while, but I just learned about it. You can gorge yourself on 'Ohana from your room if you stay at the Poly.
All the food is delivered straight to your room for $60 a person (each order really feeds about 3 people).
We don't love 'Ohana like most on here (prefer Kona Cafe), but this is a good deal if you can't get a reservation at the restaurant.
Note: they bring you the bread pudding, but will not deliver ice cream with it.

We had a brawl like that break out at the Transportation Center back in 2003.  It was nuts.  Late at night, I'm sure they had all been drinking, but the security didn't do anything then either.  It eventually just fizzled out.   21 year old me though it was mildly entertaining.  36 year old me would be mortified and I'd probably run...especially if I had kids in tow.

So he beats on not one, but two women and then cries he got choked out at the end?? And I understand avoiding confrontation, but those people just stood around.
