Disney Vacation (2 Viewers)

Please don't read more into my post.  I'm not going anytime soon unless it's an incredibly small number of people in the parks.  My point was, my concern isn't with those from other countries as much as it is with fellow Americans.  While it should be a year + from now that masks aren't required, if current behavior is any indication, it will be a mere matter of months before masks are an afterthought.  I am willing to bet there will be several "confrontations" documented on youtube in the coming months.
I think your probably right.

Crazy freaking times we are living in today. So divisive.

I would feel far more comfortable in a jam packed park full of people from Europe and Asia than one full of the average American.  We simply don't have the self awareness or desire to do the needful to drive the benefit of all.
Absolutely no doubt about it. Hell now is probably the time to go to Shanghai Disney or Paris Disney if they’d let you in the country.

Huge News From Disney: Wiping the slate clean for the remainder of 2020

When our theme parks reopen, we will manage attendance through a new theme park reservation system on DisneyWorld.com that will require all guests to make a reservation in advance for theme park entry. Over the coming weeks, we will be making some necessary updates to prepare for the launch of this park reservation system. Here’s some important information to help you plan ahead:

New Ticket Sales and Hotel Reservations: At this time, we are temporarily pausing new ticket sales and Disney Resort hotel reservations so we can focus on guests with existing tickets and reservations. Existing ticket holders and Annual Passholders will be able to make a theme park reservation before new tickets are sold; we will be reaching out to these guests soon to provide additional details. We will resume new sales of tickets and Disney Resort hotel reservations after that period of time. Theme park reservations will be limited due to attendance limitations and will be subject to availability.

Dining and Experiences: In order to foster physical distancing during this time, upon reopening, our offerings, restaurants and other experiences such as behind-the-scenes tours will be limited in capacity, and other experiences may remain closed. As a result of limited capacity, we have made the difficult decision to cancel all existing dining reservations and experience bookings, including Disney dining plans included in packages, through the end of the year. 😱 We will reopen dining and experience bookings with more limited numbers closer to when the parks reopen. We will also shift from a 180-day booking window to a 60-day booking window for dining and experience bookings going forward to allow Guests to make their plans closer to their visits.

FastPass+ and Extra Magic Hours: As a result of the COVID-19 impact, the FastPass+ service will be suspended for the time being as we plan to use additional queue space to manage capacity at our attractions and maintain physical distancing. We will automatically cancel existing FastPass+ selections and share any future updates on the service at a later date. Also, please note that upon reopening, Extra Magic Hours will be temporarily suspended.

Disney has added a web page with all this and other information

In order to make up for the lack of site down restaurants and the #### to a completely cashless system, Mobile food ordering has added "Arrival Windows" with time blocks (similar to a fastpass window) to go and pick up your food.

Even though the parks are officially opening on July 11 and 15th, it is being rumored that that there will be a series of soft openings for DVC members, AP holders and Club 33 members.

Apparently DVC resorts and Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground will reopen starting June 22.

Well, looks like I’m out. This sounds terrible. I’m not paying thousands of dollars for a half experience.

Yeah....even as an annual pass holder that lives just up the road, I don't think we're going for a while.  They've wiped fastpass queues clean though...seems like a good time to really revamp the system/process for those.  Wonder if they will.

intersting point. The FP systems has been a mess since the change—although I know some love it. But when you look at how Universal does it with their Express pass AND the real value of a proper VIP ride access system, (I hate to say it) WDW could take this opportunity to really start charging for FastPasses or some enhanced system.

On the flip side, I'm very much a fan of the 60-day ADR. I wish we could get back to something closer to that full time. 180 days just seems too far out for the average vacationer

I was wondering if they were going to do what Universal did with the water park and now their theme park. Seems like a really great way to control crowds and distribute them where you want them to be.

But one thing I have learned about Disney, based on their web site alone, is that they dont like simple. It is the single worst web site I have ever been to.

Great minds think alike.

Guess I'm still waiting to see how things shake out, but this seems to water things down a bit.  While I do rant about having to do dining and FP's so far in advance its certainly nice knowing you'll get 3 rides and a nice meal on most days.

No extra magic hours?  Now if they can truly keep the parks at 50% capacity while running all the attractions  at 100% this could really be a fun time.  It could be a mini VIP kind of experience.

We have friends staying on property in November (DVC folks). With their dining reservations being dumped in their Dining Plan, I expect them to cancel. No California Grill for me this year. Oh well.

Yeah,  I think we're about to see the cash for FP system coming.   I'd take the Universal system in a heartbeat though.  There needs to be some real incentive to stay on property, like Universal does.

I love the 60 day ADR window.  If it were up to me I'd like 60 day to book a FP then 59 days to book dining.

I think it’s highly unlikely that they can spread out people on rides for social distancing and wipe down rides between passengers and run people through as fast or faster than they run normally. Maybe they figure it out, but the logistics seem pretty difficult for that.

Yep, I think it will be a situation where the park is not as packed, but you're still waiting 90 minutes for the major attractions.  Loading FoP is already a pain, but they'll need to wipe stuff like that down after every single rider.

Not sure this can be done smoothly.  If anyone can figure it out though its Disney.

Excellent point. Mrs. O said she’s tempted by half empty parks until I reminded her the wait times will be the same. Plus we currently don’t  have tickets or hotel reservations so we’re SOL anyway for the foreseeable future. I’m fine with it. We go once every few years for a couple of days and that’s about it.

After talking it out with the Mrs at lunch I'm not too optimistic we'll be there in October.  No parade, no fireworks, no characters (this would be our adopted 5 yo's first trip so those are a must), no FP's, no extra magic hours, no more dining reservations....I'm sure they'll have solutions for some of these things, but overall thats taking a ton of the experience away.

I'm sure for the locals and the folks that come in for a day or two its not as major a deal, but for the people like me that plan to stay 6-7 nights this is taking away a ton of what makes these trips so much fun.

wife and I had this same convo this morning during our walk. We dont have any plans this year, but her parents did (and canceled) and I have my October trip  but thats not a 'vacation'  If I was going strictly as a vacation I would prob pass until things are somewhat normal.

From what I read there will be hand sanitizing stations before you get on the ride and when you get off. So they dont have to wipe down each ride vehicle each time, just contain whatever touch germs they can before and after people get off. Also hearing of a "car wash" type system when the vehicles unload (where they can) that would sanitize them—but unles this virus becomes a long term thing, that a bit overkill IMO, but who knows.

Friend said they have batted the idea around of switching out the cars throughout the day and for the rides that are like Haunted Mansion (constantly moving) doing every X car, then each time around, switching out what X is and sanitizing the ones that had just been used.

Totally agree its overkill, but I think thats what people are going to expect until further notice.

This is us exactly.  We had a trip scheduled for last week, canceled it around the same time the parks shut down, and had tentatively rebooked it for November but I seriously doubt we're going to go either.  Our 5 yo daughter is all about princess and character meets, doing the BBBoutique dressup, watching the parades, and couldn't care less about rides except the carousel and teacups.  If those are shut down there's no need in us even thinking about going.

Had to do some things with the pool guy today so wore a mask in the 100 degree heat. Even for 10 minutes it was absolutely insufferable. No way in hell I would even consider doing Disney this way.

It will be just like when I was at the store the other day, the first place i have been that required masks.  Once inside the doors, nobody wore them approrpriately

Got my email yesterday letting me know that my dining reservations and dining plan for my November trip have been canceled. The email also said that character dining is all canceled. With that and them getting rid of the fast pass system, seems like the only reason to stay on resort really would be the fact that it may be the only way you get actually get tickets/park reservations. That’s an awfully poor value proposition.

It hadn’t even occurred to me until this morning just how much Disney has to be freaking out about next year. If things aren’t back to fairly normal by the park’s 50th anniversary, that is going to tremendously suck for them.

I read that the dining reservation system is now 60 days out instead of 180.

In other news: Virgin train line is close to laying tracks for high speed rail that will connect Miami and MCO-Orlando airport

When complete, the route will take riders from Miami to Orlando in three hours.

The service will soon connect MCO to WDW
I think this is desired, not for sure yet though.  I seem to remember some significant path issues they had to figure out, but it's been a while since I've heard anything on it.

Started tossing around the idea of skipping Orlando in October, but going to Aulani, the DVC resort in Hawaii.

Anyone been? We've only had one person we know go and they didn't like it, but we don't value their opinion very much.

And does anyone know if they are having the same measures of no meet and greets and limited restaurants?  I've looked a little, but can't find much reliable info.

My best friend went there with his family last year and still raves about it. If you have any questions, I can ask him for you. I'll see him this weekend.

Nothing specific really.  Just overall I guess?  Trying to figure out stuff like, how does it compare to a Beach/Sandals type of resort?

I’m sure it will change by then but my wife’s uncle told me Hawaii is requiring a 2 week quarantine in your hotel before you can go venture around the island

Funny you bring this up GB but Aulani was on our radar for summer 2021. Its our 20th anniversary and since we became DVC we had that summer picked out. Its also the reason why we were not planning a WDW trip this summer as we were saving points and we normally would get annual passes and get 2 summer trips out of them, our AP's expired last summer. We were going to do a mixed CA/Disneyland and Aulani trip.

Now that is kind of hanging by a string for 1 reason. Aulani is very heavily visited by people from Asian countries. With the idea that Covid 19 and covid like viruses appear to have originated in Asia, I am second guessing how close I want to be to international mixing right now. Please don't take this and anything other than a fear of Covid for me and family. I live in NY and very close to NYC so the threat is very real to me domestically. If it was to say I want to go on vacation right now, it would be toward areas that were less affected by Covid, not closer toward areas where you would have people from other hot zones also vacationing.

Its a shame, b/c I was the driving force behind the trip. I'm no ruling it out but also taking a very cautious wait and see approach for instances like other international flare up or not. Unfortunately my kids are getting to the age where we prob won't have many full family summer trips left (oldest is a few years from college) and the thought of NOT going next year is heart breaking to me given how much I was looking forward to it.

That said, I hear it is beautiful, but expensive. There is a good amount to keep you in the resort but not enough for a full average stay. There is limited "Disney" theming, but the Polynesian theme and overall details are uniquely "Disney". The pool area is apparently amazing and there is a large cove carved into the beach area with breakers so you can enjoy ocean swimming with less "ocean" waves and such

In my view, you are FAR more safe in a place packed with Asians than you are your average American.  It's not even close.  Some of the most selfless individuals I have ever run across.  They get the issue and take the actions required to keep themselves and those around them as safe as possible.  I wouldn't rule it out.  I'd be excited about it.  We had our 15th anniversary last year and I took the Mrs. to Hawaii for a week...it was awesome.

My only advice is spring for first class tickets if you are east of Texas.  First time I've ever flown first class.  Being in Florida, it was WELL worth the cost for us.

I hear you and yes, in analyzing the response/outcome to Covid, Asian countries had quicker success. But that does not discount that prevailing evidence that it began and grew there. I am not trying to make it a racial issue, more of a location/proximity and percentage of guest origin concern for me. I know I've been pretty pro-theme park overall, but there you are dealing with a wider group of people from all over, a good majority from areas not as heavily affected.  Aulani seems to be more targeted because of its location. IDK?

Trust me its not a dead issue, Im just keeping a wider tab on the overall global reaction to Covid long term. We were not planning on traveling until next summer, by then we will have another "flu season" cycle to see if Covid will flare up again or not. But I would also need to start making those plans in the late fall so the timing is a bit conflicting.

As for travel, we would break it up. Fly from NY to CA, spend a few days at DL and then on to HI. The reverse would be the same, with a day or so layover in CA to see friends, then on to NY.

Hawaii has been phenomenal in combating this thing.  Probably one of the safest places to be state wise.  It's funny because I'd say 40-50% of the Asian people we ran into in Hawaii a year ago were wearing masks....they don't trust us Americans

Personally?  I'd bail on Disneyland and just shoot for Hawaii.

We spent a few days at Aulani about 4 years ago. We enjoyed the stay as the hotel is beautiful. It has it's own lagoon/beach area. The infinity pool has whale sounds playing under water. There was a lounge where my wife said she had the best Manhattan she ever drank. They have added more things to do in that area too.

My wife planned the vacation, but forgot to book transfers from the hotel back to the port (we did a cruise around the islands). The manager came out spoke to my wife and then took care of arranging the ride as well as paying for it! Great customer service!

Funny. We were thinking Aluanni for our summer trip 2021

Last time we went to Hawaii, we did the Disneyland then Hawaii thing. On the way back we hit San Francisco. Great way to break up the flight and fun to hang in California a bit too.

I love the west coast. No idea why Im still in NY. I actually do know why and her name is Mrs Acer. She wants no part of moving away from her family. :kicksrock:

Every time I turn on the news or see pictures from literally any of the protests going on the past 10 days its hard not to think crowds at Disney will be fine?  Right?  Surely I'm not the only one thinking this.

Masks will be super annoying, but otherwise we'll use some hand sanitizer and keep our hands to ourselves and we'll all be fine.  Plus flights to Hawaii are expensive.

I'd have no problem going this weekend if I could. That being said,  I won't go until they lift the mask requirement.

Disney is really crushing it with pro sports. In addition to the NBA, MLS soccer will be hosting their "MLS is back" tournament at WDW from July 8 to Aug 11 with all 26 MLS clubs competing in a continuous schedule of 54 total matches that will take place nearly every day.

The players will be taking over the Swan and Dolphin hotel for the length of the tournament.

Odd that the Disney stores in the Mall aren't even open. My niece's birthday is today and I was going to swing by the mall today to grab her something but its one of three stores in the whole place that's still closed.

The mall as a whole has been open for a few weeks now.

IDK if anyone used it, but FYI, Disney will no longer be offering air travel arrangements with their vacation packages after 2020.

Can't speak for Hawaii, but here in Florida it's the honor system.  I'm sure it's going well though.
Thanks. That's good to know. We were kicking around the idea of going to the gulf coast, but then I heard about the 2 week thing, and I read on the (I think) state website that the state police were checking Driver's licenses at the airport and ny/NJ plates on roads coming into the state. So we kinda quashed it.

They are doing that and I think you have to fill out some paper of some sort, but then it doesn't seem as if they follow up with you at any point after that.  Seems like a HUGE waste of money and screws up the flow of traffic on the interstates too.  I think they are still checking on 95, not sure about 75 or 10
