Disney Vacation (1 Viewer)

Am I crazy for considering a Thanksgiving week trip?  Figured this was the lesser of two evils compared to the week between Xmas and New Years for overwhelming crowds. Anyone have any recent experience?
both will be insanely busy but I would say thanksgiving is slightly less...by maybe 2-3 families. lol

We went once on Black Friday, in like 2014 or 15 with family in town and it was shockingly pleasant. I don’t think a lot of people are planning Disney trips that week. Big family weekend. But, it’s been a long time now.

Oh boy:

Disney Acknowledges Motion Sickness Problem on Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind in EPCOT, Riders Offered Vomit Bags at Exit

While not on display for guests, like they are in their compartments on Mission: SPACE, Cast Members may offer guests who appear to be getting sick a bag as they exit the ride. Additional garbage cans with open lids have reportedly been installed 🤮 along the exits to accommodate the issue.

Traveling through the dark show building filled with stars may be disorienting for guests, contributing to the sickness factor. While previews were underway, our reporters spotted a number of guests resting on benches or in Connections Eatery to recover from the experience.

I think any of those weeks are crazy. You couldn't pay me to go Thanksgiving week again.

Looking to go mid-january with the wife for our 25th anniversary.  We'll spend a week in the Keys and a week in DW. Trying to decide on what resort to go to. We've been to Coronado, Caribbean Beach,  Poly, OKW, All Star Music, and a few others I'm not remembering now.

We're looking at Boardwalk and Port Orleans FQ. Anyone have any experience with either hotel? Or, perhaps,  other recommendations? We'd like to avoid repeating resorts.

Have you looked at the Riviera or gran destino tower? GD is part of coranado but a whole other experience and design

I haven't looked at Riviera,  but we have stayed at GD tower. You're right, it's very cool.
I've never been to the RR, but it seems like a very pretty/romantic resort with the design style and artwork. Nice for an occasion type trip. Also I hear Topolino's Terrace is a really nice restaurant.

If you are looking for an anniversary gift suggestion, not like you asked but I like spending other people's money lol Book a private photoshoot at the resort. This is a photographer who did a shoot for us years ago for my wife's 40th bday and we are booking her again for my in-laws as a 50th anniversary gift while they are there. Private photographers can only shoot at the resorts, not the parks, but IMO the resorts are nicer. We have a few of the photos hanging in the house including this  centerpiece one that everyone loves (it was at the boardwalk).

I'll look into that, thanks.  I do think we'll try to do the behind the magic tour (think that's what it's called). See the inner workings a little bit.

While its not out of Disney's mouth yet, actress Anika Noni Rose(the voice of Tiana in The Princess and the Frog) said during today's episode of “Live with Ryan and Kelly” that Disney plans to have the Princess and the Fog Splash Mountain replacement at both Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom in 2024.

She didn't go into more detail, and so far nothing official from Disney, but D23 is this September and it is expected to be officially announced there (if true).

Anyone with any experience staying at the Swan? Looks nice and the wife wanted stay by the Boardwalk.
We stay frequently at the dolphin which is the same and we like it quite a bit. The boat ride to Epcot and Hollywood alone are almost worth it, and the walk to the boardwalk is great. One of my favorite places to stay there.

Was actually able to get the Swan reserve.  A friend works for Mariott and gets a friend and family discount that made the Swan Reserve cheaper than the Swan.

very cool...here is a pretty good overview of the location

def seems like a more adult type resort, with a little extras distance to the parks. If I was with kids I'd opt to stay back at the Swan or Dolphin simply on amenities and things like the pool. Plus crossing the road with strollers and such would be a pain. The right there access to the mini-golf though is is a bonus.

Otherwise, the best benefit of these resorts is that that are not-Disney, but you get the same benefits as all regular resort guests but in the deluxe category which is even better. So things like early morning entry and extra magic hours (deluxe only) is part of your stay.

Thanks for the video,  I just had a chance to check it out.  I loved the looks of the hotel and, to my surprise,  my wife liked it even more.

January can't come fast enough.....

We walked through the new Reserve a couple of months ago while staying at the Dolphin and it was very nice.

The pro putt putt is amazing. They have 2 courses with 1 being like a real golf course with carpet bunkers and water hazards and was really fun. The other course is typical putt putt for kids.

Are at Morimoto’s last night at Disney springs. One of the better meals I’ve had at Disney, of course it’s owned independently. Incredibly fresh fish, I ate so much of this fat belly tuna they had on special. Highly recommend.

My god, Rise of the Resistance can be such a PITA! We're in Disneyland this week and bought LL passes for Resistance on Monday. I think we got in line 3 times for the LL entrance and all 3 times the ride shut down. We left the park mid-afternoon due to the heat and Resistance wasn't operating consistently until about 5 in the afternoon. Went to Customer Relations today and got a refund for the passes we didn't use. Thankfully were able to buy passes again today and make it on the ride. People working the ride were still apologizing today for how bad it was on Monday.

Ah crap. I have a weak stomach. That sucks.
Yeah I can’t do rides that spin or any of those rides like they have at universal where it’s basically a screen and you get the feeling you are moving (or maybe your chair moves too I forget)

I’ll stick to roller coasters (that I’m not too fat for)

Took the family earlier this month and we were fortunate enough to ride Guardians twice, once via the virtual queue and I paid up for LL the other time.

I didn't find it to be nauseating in the least, and I do sometimes get dizzy on rides. My best description of it would be a modern day Space Mountain. All 4 of us loved it.

Way to go Disney! Another head scratcher.

Disney pulls out of the high-speed Brightline train system, and will not be stopping at Disney Springs.

Why? Bc they added a Universal stop.

Really WDW? Do you care at all how your guests get to your property? You cancelled the best thing you had going for air travelers, a bus system directly to the resort, now this?

Execs at UO must be rolling on the floor right now.
Seems smart short term but dumb long term. Right now Disney almost certainly has quite a bit excess demand, so they can raise ticket prices, go from the free Fast Pass to paid Genie+ and LL, and get rid of free/cheap transportation options to Disney and still have plenty of people willing to pay full freight and figure out all those extra logistics.

But at some point they will burn off that extra demand and things will tip the other way. And if/when it does, it will be very difficult and expensive to change some of the infrastructure decisions they are making now.

I get the feeling that WDW has its head in the sand in regards to UO and their 3rd full park opening. OU as always been that little annoyance to WDW but they are gaining ground quick. I know a lot of people who are splitting their vacation between WDW and UO or flat out going to OU b/c they are sick of the crowds and process.

Yes, WDW is in the driver seat now, but once the 3rd park opens and people can make a case for spending their full week at OU, I think you are going to see a big dip in WDW attendence. Esp when you add in those "little things" like this rail line that will now stop at UO. I just spend $130 each way for a bus from MCO to my WDW resort (8 of us). You dont think spending that kind of money just to get there isnt going to factor into people's planning? Esp when WDW use to provide that for free? Now take this rail line, fast, new clean that only stops at UO (price TBD of course) vs a bus to WDW? I think WDW is foolish to remove thmeselves from the project simply b/c it made a stop at UO 1st.

Their spare ribs are outstanding. Love that place.

Just Back 7/2-7/9

1st stay at Saratoga Springs and was very impressed. SS is a DVC resort but I do believe you can book there. It is a HUGE resort, spread out over 5 or so sections. 2 of them are considered preferred—and are slightly more expensive—but they put you closer to the main hospitality or a view of Disney Springs right across the lake and DS within walking distance.

Backstory: we didn't plan for this vacation, but my 16 yo daughter got invited on a friend's Sweet 16 trip/gift. MY wife wasn't keen on her being so far away, so we booked to align with their trip "just to be there"....moms  . The girls and their family stayed off site at another timeshare. We also traveled with another one of the guests families, we all are friends through daughter's dance team, so they rented some of our DVC points and we got a 2 bedroom lock off with them.

So its was a little non-tradtional trip: me, wife and my 12 yo and the other family of 3. To save $$ we didn't have hoppers and only did a day in each park and planned a lot of full days/rope drops which is contrast to my normal style of popping into a park in the AM, then going back to resort and resting, and then into a different park at night.

some observations:
1. Right off the bat, I love/hate Genie plus. I was in the "hate" camp since it came out. I used it 1x before for a quick trip but still found it annoying. For this trip, wow, what a difference!

1st the hate: I hated getting up before 7am to make that initial paid lightning lane selection. I don't get up that early for work everyday, let alone on vacation. But since we planned on rope dropping things, it was too far off from when we needed to start getting ready anyway. I don't like paying for the rides, it left a bad taste in my mouth...$90 extra for the 6 of us for 1 ride. We limited it to just 2 rides, Rise and Guardians, but it forced us to def RD the other parks.

Now the good: if you are fairly savvy and know what is worth booking a reservation for or not, G+ is pretty bad butt. I cant say there was anything we missed out on that we wanted to do. My only real complaint is that you cant pick your booking time for the attractions, it a take what we have kind of thing. And for certain attractions, say ones that were across the park or if you wanted to break for lunch, you had to hold off booking these and keep checking to see when a time was right. If you got lax on that, you may find the reservation time jumped too much later and you are screwed.

I know people complained about being on your phone all day, but I didnt feel that way. No more than scrolling FB or twitter. Plus 75% of the day you are on line, so do it then. Unlike the old FP, you can have overlapping reservations, so you need to be careful about that b/c it does reduce your time window to make that 2nd reservation.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy ride was really fun! I'm not going to spoil it but the rotating cars not only help with the storytelling aspect, but really enhanced the overall ride experience. Most of the ride is just a roller coaster in a dark room, similar to RnRC, but the rotating cars made it 10x better.

We did buy the paid LL for it and also got in a boarding group. We did Epcot on July 4th. I expected higher crowds so I wanted to lock in that ride at last. As for boarding groups, this is where these things annoy me. We didn't plan on getting to Epcot until later, knowing we would be there all night for the Fireworks. We went to jump in on the 1st boarding group drop at 7 am but realized we have no control over when we would need to be there, so we decided to wait until the 1pm drop (thankfully there was one)., but again, knowing the crowds were high, not knowing how many people were being admitted into the BG's, was giving up that opportunity going to cost me getting shut out?? Thankfully it didn't, but I got right in at 1 (this is where the #### watching game sucks) got a BG for 6ish pm. Thankfully that didn't interfere with my planned dinning which would have been a whole other issue.

3. Profiles/Traveling party groups are a hassle when it is minor and you are not traveling together. We spent a good chunk of the day working this out with the guest relations team. My daughter was with the other family and we were having issues making reservations for my wife who "controlled" my daughters profile. Same for them ,they kept getting my wife added to their reservations. Unfortunately, when everything is digital, little scenarios like this can really put a dent in your planning.

4. 4th of July fireworks were Epic. We did Epcot on the 4th, mainly b/c it easier to get a good spot anywhere around the lake than waste hours standing shoulder to shoulder on Main st IMO. I will say, Harmonious is growing on me, I still miss Illuminations, but Harmonious is not a bad replacement. THey added about a 8 minute 4th of july tag right after Harmonious and it was insane. You couldn't see the across the lake afterward b/c of all the smoke.

Pro tip: if you are looking for a good spot to watch Harmonious, dont worry about getting up close to the railing, look at pavilions in WS that have open courtyards up front. You dont realize it, but the countries are slightly raised from the main walkway and it provides just enough lift to get you over the hordes squished against the railing. We watched from Japan, maybe 20-25 feet back from the main walkway and it was perfect.

I'll add more as I think of it

We are going in September with a group of adults that was originally 6 but now ballooned to 12.  We are also staying at Saratoga (our home resort).

We do not plan on using Genie+ or LL$ while we are there.   We will do rope drop and prioritize to what we want to do but if a line is too long we'll just skip it.   I just don't want to bother with it on this trip and am hoping that crowds will be more manageable in September.

Next year we'll be going with the grandkids so we'll probably do Genie+ then.

Adding:
the few restaurants we visited were excellent and accommodating.  We didn't plan on a lot of sit down dining b/c of time and cost.

• Had a Cape May dinner reservation that we realized we would have trouble making, I was able to go on the app and change the time to an hour later with no issue.

• Had a chef Mickey breakfast on our last day (Saturday). When talking to the other family about dropping our kids off to go home, we thought it would be cool if they could do it early so we could have a breakfast with our full families. With that, the girl who's birthday trip was for asked "can we come too??" Being they just paid for our daughters for a week I couldn't say no. So that made out party of originally 6 balloon to 10. I didnt try and rebook, instead I just rolled the dice and schoomozed the greeter with my personality. They were very accommodating, they honestly said it could be a few mins past our reservation time which was a good compromise, and got us all in.

• We didnt have any dining planned on our AK day, but found ourselves very hungry and not in the mood for QS. Esp since most of it there is either meh or completely served outside (it was Hades level hot there that day). We went to Rainforest Cafe and I asked if they could accommodate a table of 6? They said sure, and it would be 45 mins. I responded with "how about for Landry's select club members" and that number dropped to 15 mins. Can I tell you, as soon as I stepped away from the podium they called our name. Now I had forgotten my card at home so thankfully she never asked to see it, but they did ask for my phone number attached to the acct at the table.
Moral of the story, get a Landry's Select card and you get front of the line at RFC, T-rex and many other locations worldwide.

I don't know what they do to their ribs, but they are unreal.

@Godsbrother thanks for the little push to Saratoga when I was first inquiring.

We booked preferred, I wanted (and requested) the Congress Park/Dis Springs view, we got the Springs section instead. Turns out it was the better option based on the proximity to things.

The rooms have recently been completely refurbished. My wife who is a consummate germaphobe felt very comfortable there. We had a 1 bedroom for ourselves, and a studio lock off for another family we traveled with. Our location was set perfectly between the main pool/hospitality and the Paddock pool and grill. We actually found the Paddock pool more enjoyable.

We spent a lot of time at Dis Springs, and found the boat dock closer than we expected (right through the preview center buildings).

As someone who normally stays at Bay Lake or Beach Club, the wife said she really enjoyed our stay there and would def be open to booking there again.

Ahhhh....nothing like a fine day at the park and a nice family vs family brawl in Fantasyland to really punctuate the magic.

Happened today (7/30). Apparently the families were on line at Philharmagic when one realized they left a cell phone in a scooter outside. She left the line and went to go get it but when she returned the family in matching outfits wouldn't let her pass. Words were exchanged, and after the film, the matching shirt family was waiting for the other family outside the exit.

Then a nice old bibbity-bobbity-brawl ensued.

I've seen a small fight at the parks, but nothing like that (ironically enough, for the same reason this one started). I hope they were all kicked out especially the mouthy woman who kept stirring up #### everytime they seemed to calm down.

I have to say, i'm pretty chill and merry when i'm at WDW...however if there is 1 thing that grinds my gears is the families that sit their rumps dead center in a theater show and make everyone climb over them instead of moving all the way down the row.

I actually get very vocal and snarky about it, yelling things like "we need to move down people! Get up and keep moving" I know its right and the rule, but I have a feeling its going to cause a fight one day. But I dont care. IMO those people should get lifetime anal warts.

update: apparently from the family NOT in the matching shirts

“We got banned from Disney forever unless we contact the head. 2 people from other party got arrested and the rest left, no one from our fam was arrested yet and they still have us here. They r making us leave our resort which is riviera even though we are here for another 2 weeks. We have to leave Disney property including typhoon lagoon, and disney springs.”

they all sound like real rocket scientists.

I step on their feet. I ####### hate these people, my wife half tried this move not dead center, I just said get up keep going.

The freaking tell you keep moving.  But no we're special!1!#!##

last trip, I told my wife that I want to make a shirt that says "if you don't move all the way down, I WILL fart on you as we climb over you."

but honestly, these are all 3D movies....there is no bad seat. Everything happens inside your own eyeballs!!!

I still can't get the itch to go back to WDW, but we are in the early stages of planning a trip to DL.  Been a while since we went there, and that trip was extremely short.  Spring break 2023 is taking me to Phoenix for work the first half.  Plan on making our way to Anaheim for 3 or 4 nights.  Grand California Lodge!  I the slower pace of DL will be a good way to ease back into Disney.

My family shares DVC points and its turned into a disaster (for them, I know what I'm doing).   My parents really had no idea what they were doing and thought it would be fun.   They honestly thought they could get 200 points a year and if no one used them for 5 years they could do a big (1000 point) vacation using all the accumulated points.  Its been painful pretty much being in charge of the points.

This year was my sisters year to use her points.  She kept putting it off and putting it off...I kept telling them she had to use 200 points by December.  She literally booked it last week.  Her trip looks absolutely miserable.  Its 3 different hotels over 5 nights.

I remember when you were first looking at points and the idea of sharing came up and you commented on how different you and your siblings were. It doesnt take long to wreck a year of points if you are not careful. Sorry to hear, but as you said, its not your trip.

I'll be out in CA at the end of august but in Sacremento Area, so prob too far for a swing over to DL. Plus my kids would kill me if I went. They dont mind me hitting WDW alone, but they have been itching to go to DL recently.

If you are planing on using your DVC on Grand Californian, be warned, there are very few DVC rooms there and the members who own there get 1st crack. You might be better renting your points and then flipping that and rent someones GC points to get in at 11 months. (I didnt do the math, how far away is spring break next year?)

The other option is that they are building a new DVC tower at DL. IDK about the progress and when it will be completed, but something to check out

Its been a mess...for them!   Whats the name of the place where you resale the DVC points?  They have 15 to get rid of.

We're a week or so out from being able to book at the Grand Cali...it still says there are rooms available.   We've never had luck booking something that wasn't at our DVC home, but we've only tried a few times.
