I drive about 40k miles a year in the MD/DC/VA metropolitan area. I am right and you are wrong.
These are your 10 commandments of driving:
I'll pass your asses on the left and right and you'll like it. People have places to go and #### to do. (Not talking passing over double lines or single lanes)
If you're in the leftmost lane and a car approaches from behind, you move to the right. Always. Don't be a ####.
Learn and properly use the merge lanes.
You can make a right on red unless there's a sign stating not to, however, you should always come to a complete stop prior to turning.
The zip method is more efficient***. I understand the natural reaction to cars flying by you on your right and getting in front of you as their lane ends while as you stand still like a good little boy or girl. You get angry and think it's unfair. It's not. The reason your lane is clogged is because more people aren't riding out the end of the lane. People bog things down when they realize they need to eventually get over and start hitting the brakes and trying to veer into the left lane. I used to be like you, but there's a reason the right lanes where everybody is doing all this butting are STILL faster then those gridlocked left lanes.
*** _This does not apply to those jerks who cut in and out of the right lanes that have cars parked just ahead or lanes that close immediately after the light that results in the right lane driving speeding in excess and cutting off the left lane drivers natural speed. (See the golden rule at the end)
When entering a shopping area, don't stop unless there's a stop sign!!!!!!!!!!
Right of way. Learn the right of way rules and ALWAYS follow them. Sometimes you think you are being polite by letting a car go ahead when you actually have the right of way. You're not polite, you're a ####### imbecile and creating at least a confusing situation and at worst a dangerous situation.
Driving comes before all communication. Some people can text and drive, however most people can't. Nobody should really be texting while driving.
If you miss your turn you keep going and make a u-turn or other ways. - What you don't do, and this is a relatively new phenomenon of drivers looking up from their cell phones and realizing they're about to miss their exit or turn and literally stop 4 lanes of traffic so they're not inconvenienced. I want to quit my job and join the police force so I can haul these dudes off to jail every time I see it.
The golden rule.....when in doubt, do what you must, however never inconvenience another driver.
Most of the pompousness is tongue in cheek but I firmly believe most of what I wrote. I realize my sample size is different then most of I honestly believe there should be a nationwide campainge to teach basic driving ettiqute and more stringient testing at the MVA. It needs to be hard to get a drivers license.
