Do you ever start a DST playing against your QB? (1 Viewer)

Does this ever work out for both or just a way to hedge?
It can work out for both... fumble returns, kickoff returns, etc. But yes, usually it will even out. If you're an underdog and need a boom or bust week, I'd try to avoid it. If you're a favourite or are confident in your other guys, its a nice hedge so if your qb throws a pick you're not very upset by it.

If Peyton Manning is going to throw 5 picks, then he's going to throw 5 picks. I'm not going to not start him next game. Start the best available and don't think too much about it

I can't follow this line as I'm always streaming my defense so unless I was starting Vick, Carr, Bortles, Bridgewater and etc. etc. out of desperation this would just never be an option. In the same vein, if you have a top 10 option at QB I can't imagine how a defensive pairing would be optimal either. This strategy seems like a poor hedge. If you want to hedge against your QB under-performing than grab the kicker from the same team.

I agree with most of the replies to this thread--play your best guys (especially so when it comes to the qb portion of this question). However, I don't see any defenses as being being weekly must starts this season. I've been streaming defenses so far this season and it has worked great for me. If you are in a position to where you are in a deep league with a qb on bye--and are forced to start somebody thats very questionable (maybe a Vick..etc)--I see no problem in starting the opposing defense as a way to get some guaranteed points.

A lot of it comes down to internal struggle. I prefer not to start both as it just sucks as a fan watching and not knowing whether to be happy or not if RG3 throws a pick. On a strategy level, sure, do it if you really want the hedge, because your 2nd best DST option is probably as good as your first. But if its a coin flip which D to use, I'd prefer not to use the one vs my qb only because it bothers me to watch and not know what to cheer for :P

This whole "start your best guy" stuff doesn't always apply. First if all, defensive scoring is pretty random so it's really hard to say with any certainty what your best option is. Also, In most scoring systems it is not optimal to start a D against your QB. If you get points for shutouts, it is impossible to get those points and have your qb have a good game. It is VERY difficult to have both your QB and D have really good games if they are playing each other.

Start your best guys, but don't take it to goofy levels.

I'm starting Palmer and the DAL DEF in a league this week. Palmer's pick 6 to the DAL DEF is not a bad thing at all in that context
