Why Facebooks Is for Old Fogies

Facebook is five. Maybe you didn't get it in your news feed, but it was in February 2004 that Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg, along with some classmates, launched the social network that ate the world. Did he realize back then in his dorm that he was witnessing merely the larval stage of his creation? For what began with college students has found its fullest, richest expression with us, the middle-aged. Here are 10 reasons Facebook is for old fogies:

1. Facebook is about finding people you've lost track of. And, son, we've lost track of more people than you've ever met. Remember who you went to prom with junior year? See, we don't. We've gone through multiple schools, jobs and marriages. Each one of those came with a complete cast of characters, most of whom we have forgotten existed. But Facebook never forgets. (See the best social networking applications.)

2. We're no longer bitter about high school. You're probably still hung up on any number of petty slights, but when that person who used to call us that thing we're not going to mention here, because it really stuck, asks us to be friends on Facebook, we happily friend that person. Because we're all grown up now. We're bigger than that. Or some of us are, anyway. We're in therapy, and it's going really well. These are just broad generalizations. Next reason.

3. We never get drunk at parties and get photographed holding beer bottles in suggestive positions. We wish we still did that. But we don't. (See pictures of Denver, Beer Country.)

4. Facebook isn't just a social network; it's a business network. And unlike, say, college students, we actually have jobs. What's the point of networking with people who can't hire you? Not that we'd want to work with anyone your age anyway. Given the recession--and the amount of time we spend on Facebook--a bunch of hungry, motivated young guns is the last thing we need around here.

5. We're lazy. We have jobs and children and houses and substance-abuse problems to deal with. At our age, we don't want to do anything. What we want is to hear about other people doing things and then judge them for it. Which is what news feeds are for.

6. We're old enough that pictures from grade school or summer camp look nothing like us. These days, the only way to identify us is with Facebook tags. (See pictures of a diverse group of American teens.)

7. We have children. There is very little that old people enjoy more than forcing others to pay attention to pictures of their children. Facebook is the most efficient engine ever devised for this.

8. We're too old to remember e-mail addresses. You have to understand: we have spent decades drinking diet soda out of aluminum cans. That stuff catches up with you. We can't remember friends' e-mail addresses. We can barely remember their names.

9. We don't understand Twitter. Literally. It makes no sense to us.

10. We're not cool, and we don't care. There was a time when it was cool to be on Facebook. That time has passed. Facebook now has 150 million members, and its fastest-growing demographic is 30 and up. At this point, it's way cooler not to be on Facebook. We've ruined it for good, just like we ruined Twilight and skateboarding. So git! And while you're at it, you damn kids better get off our lawn too.

Been dating someone about 6 months, we're both on there, she has about 500 pictures on FB to my 3. Many are from over a year ago and are of her with an ex-bf. Nothing bad just on vacations, parties, etc.

Sometimes I get sick of these pictures being up there but figure I'm just being jealous or an idiot so I don't say anything. Should it be common courtesy for her to remove these or am I being an idiot?

She's 24, I'm 29.

I think she should have removed them out of common courtesy. But if she didn't, I don't see anything to be gained by asking her to. Just let it slide.

The thing about pics is that if someone else posts a pic of you and tags you in it than it goes into your photo area.I know a girl (who is extremely hot) that only has about 35 pics that she has actually posted herself......but her "photos" area shows about 500 total pictures from all of the random FB friends that take pictures with her when they are out and than post and tag her in the pics.

I've never heard of it being common courtesy to do that.
 
Facebook apparently changed their user agreement recently. The newest change not only gives them the rights to use ANY info/material that you upload, but it gives them those rights even if you decide to delete your account!!!

"You hereby grant Facebook an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to (a) use, copy, publish, stream, store, retain, publicly perform or display, transmit, scan, reformat, modify, edit, frame, translate, excerpt, adapt, create derivative works and distribute (through multiple tiers), any User Content you (i) Post on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof subject only to your privacy settings or (ii) enable a user to Post, including by offering a Share Link on your website and (b) to use your name, likeness and image for any purpose, including commercial or advertising, each of (a) and (b) on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof."In other words, while it doesn't actually own your photos, scribblings and status updates — you do — Facebook can do whatever it wants with it, whenever it wants, in order to promote itself or create or sell ads.Theoretically, it can even "license" a picture of your kids for use in a third party's ad campaign.

I just do not enjoy seeing pics of her with other guys she's banged, I think that is thinking like a guy. Wasn't sure if it was common courtesy or not to remove certain pics, so I asked the question :excited: I plan to forget the whole thing.

Unfortunately for you, Facebook can still use everything you've ever posted to Facebook for whatever means they want. They can even sell anything that you've uploaded to other companies to use.

(CNN) -- Under fire from tens of thousands of users, the social networking site Facebook said early Wednesday it is reverting to its old policy on user information -- for now.

Backlash against Facebook began after a consumer advocate site flagged Facebook's policy change.

The site posted a brief message on users' home pages that said it was returning to its previous "Terms of Use" policy "while we resolve the issues that people have raised."

The "Terms of Use" is the legalese tacked on to the bottom of most Web sites that details what the site's owners can do with the information that users provide.

Facebook, the Web's most popular social networking site, has been caught in a content-rights battle after revealing earlier this month that it was granting itself permanent rights to users' photos, wall posts and other information even after a user closed an account.

The popular site allows users to create personal profiles where they can then connect with one another, upload photos and share links. The site boasts more than 150 million active users.

Member backlash against Facebook began over the weekend after a consumer advocate Web site, The Consumerist, flagged a change made to Facebook's policy earlier in the month.

The company deleted a sentence from the old Terms of Use. That sentence said Facebook could not claim any rights to original content that a user uploaded once the user closed his or her account.

It replaced it with: "You may remove your User Content from the Site at any time. ... (H)owever, you acknowledge that the Company may retain archived copies of your User Content."

In response, Chris Walters wrote in the Consumerist post, "Make sure you never upload anything you don't feel comfortable giving away forever, because it's Facebook's now."

Thousands of indignant members either canceled their accounts or created online petitions. Among them were more than 64,000 who joined a group called "The People Against the new Terms of Service."

On Monday, Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg tried to quell the controversy by saying the company's philosophy is that "people own their information and control who they share it with."

But members were not appeased because the site did not fix its Terms of Use. The company, in its post Wednesday, said it was returning to its previous Terms of Use because of the "feedback" it had received.

"As Mark expressed in his blog post on Monday, it was never our intention to confuse people or make them uneasy about sharing on Facebook," company spokesman Barry Schnitt said in a blog post. "I also want to be very clear that Facebook does not, nor have we ever, claimed ownership over people's content. Your content belongs to you."

Schnitt said the company is in the process of rewording its Terms of Use in "simple language that defines Facebook's rights much more specifically."

"Well that worked pretty fast," wrote member Al Reford of Vancouver, British Columbia. "Numbers count when giving feedback :thumbdown:"

And Shahrzad Grami of St. Paul, Minnesota, added: " YAYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!! nice job guys! i won't be canceling my account after all."

 
I've been asked to join facebook, and I have a few questions for those in the know:

(1) First there was myspace, then there was friendster (neither of which I joined).... now facebook. Why should I join facebook (and go thru the effort to set up my own page) if it's likely to be replaced by the "next big thing"?

(2) Do people get offended if you turn down their request to be your friend? Example: a next door neighbor in high school would likely ask to be my friend -- I don't want to be his friend, but don't want to be rude. What's the shark move here?

(3) I don't think I like the potential of worlds colliding. Example: I don't want some people to have potential communications with that stripper I dated in Phoenix. Any thoughts on this?

(4) Do you have the ability to delete "messages/shout-outs" that other people leave on your page? Example: I don't want a co-worker to see that a high school acquaintance wrote "party at Steve's house" on my page.

(1) That's up to you.(2) It depends on the person. I haven't turned town a request if it's from a person I actually know, as I don't see any reason not to have them on there and then just limit them through settings.(3) People can't communicate with your other friends unless they are friends with them themselves. You can also set up groups and settings so that they don't see each other.(4) Yes.

MySpace is horrible, and was popular only because it was first. (I don't know anything about friendster.) Facebook is much better than MySpace. It could ultimately be replaced by something better, but now that it's the leader (like MySpace was) and doesn't completely suck (like MySpace did), it will be hard to displace, IMO.

2 - Go to "Random quotations"

The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3 - Go to flickr and click on "explore the last seven days"

or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days

Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4 - Use photoshop or similar to put it all together.

5 - Post it to FB with this text in the "caption" and TAG the friends you want to join in.

My band, "French Films of 1924" will be releasing our debut album What They Ought To Be next month. Thinking of going with this as the album cover.I'm pretty cool. :lmao:

I think so. If not, then you won t be able to join my mafia since you are already in Girl A's. I am in Girl A's mafia also. Just a lowly foot soldier trying to make my bones.
